What is internet protocol?

Internet Protocol is a set of technical rules that defines how computer communicate with each others.

There are two currently version : IP version 4(ipv4) and IP version 6 (ipv6).

Page 3: Ipv 4 and ipv6

What is ipv4?

• IPv4 is the first version of Internet Protocol to be widely use and accounts for most of today’s internet traffic. There are just 4 billions IPv4 address. While that is lot of IP address, it is not enough to last forever.

Page 4: Ipv 4 and ipv6

What is ipv6?

• IPv6 is a newer numbering system that provides a much larger number address pool than ipv4,amongs others features.

• It was develop in 1999 and should meet the world’s IP address needs well into the

Future.

Difference between ipv6 & ipv4

Transition strategies/Migration Mechanism

Three transition techniques

• Dual stack• Tunneling• Translation

Translation procedure:Allow ipv6 only devices to communicate with ipv4

only devices

Page 7: Ipv 4 and ipv6

Dual stack procedure:

To allow ipv4 & ipv6 to co-exist in the same devices & networks

Page 8: Ipv 4 and ipv6

Tunneling procedure:

Allows separate IPv6 networks to communicate via an IPv4 network.

Convert IPv4 into IPv6

Method 1:HEXADECIMAL METHOD

There are two method to convert ipv4 into ipv6. 192.168.25.234 • First we divide each octet by 16 and write down

the remainder,

192 ÷ 16 = 12 remainder 0168 ÷ 16 = 10 remainder 825 ÷ 16 = 1 remainder 9234 ÷ 16 = 14 remainder 10

Convert IPv4 into IPv6

• As we know that the IP address of Ipv4 was

192.168.25.234

• Now the conversion of this address in Ipv6 is

C0A8:19EA

Method 2: BINARY METHOD• Another easier way is to convert the octets into

Binary. • The conversion of this192.168.25.234 IP in

binary system is

192:11000000

168:10101000

25:00011001

243:11101010
