Match ReportsSouthern Women’s League

Saturday 4th September dawned clear and bright the perfect day for athletics, not as it turned out for coach journeys! After a long and frustrating journey caused by the Duxford Airshow traffic chaos we arrived in Stevenage (via Cambridge), with minutes to spare before the match began. The mission for the day being to maintain the clubs premiership status earned with a promotion just last year. With the team missing some of its regular stars a solid performance was needed against tough opposition including fourth place team Radley AC and two of the teams scrapping for premier league survival Wycombe and Havant AC.

The Under 15s managed a pretty full squad for this meeting Enya Moore and Emily Lambert were in their usual fine form in the sprints wining both A and B races in the 100m with Enya also winning the B 200m and Emily finishing a close second in the A race. Good performances continued in the middle distance races with Emily Robinson finishing 2nd in the A 800m in a time of 2:42 and Lauren Ramsey 1st in the B race in 2:48.8. Whilst fellow team mate Katie Peake came home second in the 1500m. Sarah Prescott-Smith and Beth Clarke did their usual double act in the hurdles and LongJump with Beth earning seconds in the A string and Sarah firsts in the B. Sarah then went on to take second place in the high jump with 1.50m. Ellie Bloomfield and Alice Robinson ably covered the throws with extra help from Katie Peake in the shot.

The senior womens team lead by their valiant team managers Elizabeth Welbourn and Leanne Thorndyke (who had only just flown in from a trip abroad!) played their part in this crucial tie. Leanne lead the way with runs in the B 400m and 800m and Elizabeth along side Kirsty Thorndyke in the 1500m. Every member worked their socks off filling in where required to gain extra points for the team. Jess Crissell had a busy day competing in the A 100m, Long Jump and her more favoured Triple Jump

where she finished second with a jump of 10.32m. Chloe Cooper performed well in both B sprints finishing 2nd in the 100m and third in the 200m. Clare Welbourn had a good solid run in the B 200m clocking 29.7. Multi talented stalwart of the team Kerry Fuller executed fine performances in the hurdles, shot, discus and hammer along side Everlyn Thompson performing well in the B string throws. More valuable points were gained by Jenny Reason competing in the B hurdles, triple Jump and her main event the pole vault where she came 2nd with 2.50m. After a tough days competition the teams efforts were rewarded with a sound points total which secured a 9th place finish and another year in the Premiership! Match Result

Eastern Young Athletes League The final round of the Eastern Young Athletes League took place at the Garrison stadium in Colchester with Harriers having a great chance to reach the final at Stevenage. There was a reasonable turnout considering we were in the middle of the holiday season. In fact the Under 17 squad were boosted by the efforts of Tom Powell, Leon Holmes and Jessica Crissell who turned up in the afternoon after running in an invitational event at the Bedford International Games that morning. In the end, Harriers came 3rd behind Havering and Mayesbrook, with a strong Bedford team coming 2nd.

The U13 boys again consisted of two boys, Benson Craven and debutant Richard Ling. Craven turned in two PBs finishing 4th in the 100m with 13.7 and 3rd in 28.6 in the 200m but winning the Long Jump with 4.30m. Ling managed a creditable time of 2.48 gaining 4th place in the 800m in his first experience of competition. He then helped the team gain more points by coming 5th in the Long Jump with 3.42m.

The U13 girls had enough for a relay team and showed their versatility in covering a range of events. None showed this more than Elise Morey who won the shot with 5.61m, came 2nd in the B 800m and 6th in the High Jump. Chloe Godbold got a PB of 3.70m in the Long Jump, finished 2nd in the 1500m with 5.46 and then 5th in the A 100m. Chantelle Kilpatrick came 2nd in her 100m with 14.6, and 6th in the Long Jump and 200m. Lucy Peake came 3rd in the shot and gained valuable points in the 200m and 800m before helping out the relay squad to 5th.

The U15 boys just failed to win their section coming 2nd to Bedford. They were given a great start with victories in the A and B 100m by Wesley Doyle and George Johnson. The highlight was superb performances in the 1500m by Bradley Wattleworth and Ross Tenant both winning their races in times of 4.30 and 4.36 respectively. James Bemrose came 2nd in the 800m with 2.36 while Toby Upson came 5th in the A race and 3rd in the discus. Jason Strauss won the Pole Vault at his first attempt at this event. Kasey Hagen won the B Long Jump with 4.73m and came 2nd in the High Jump. Errol Thompson came 3rd in the hurdles and also finished 2nd and 3rd in his jumps. The throwing team were anchored by Finlay Hudson who got a pb of 34.30m in coming 2nd in the javelin and then 3rd in the shot. Charlie Middleton came 3rd in the Hammer and 6th in the discus.

The U15 girls were again too strong for the opposition. This time it was an all round performance where they filled in every event to gain the maximum points. Emily Lambert won the 100m before storming to victory in the 300m with 43.3. Enya Moore won the B 100m, came 2nd in the 200m and showed the application of the girls in getting points in the javelin, her first attempt ever at this event. Keeley Whitlock came 2nd in the B 200m and also helped out in the javelin. Rachel Ryan managed 2nd in the 800m with 2.32, while Lauren Ramsey also finished 2nd in the B race with 2.43. Katie Peake came 4th in the 1500m with 5.36. Leah Clement showed her versatility by getting points in the discus, shot and 3rd in the 300m. Helena Coe came 3rd in the shot and 5th in the discus. Christina Day got 1.25m to finish 2nd in the High Jump. Finally Beth Clarke and Lissie Lehkyj both came 2nd in their Long Jump with Clarke getting 12.8 in the hurdles and Lehkyj 13.7.

The U17 boys acquitted themselves well against a formidable Havering team. Newman Calderley started them off with 5th in the 100m and 4th in the Long Jump with 4.56m. The arrival of Tom Powell and Leon Holmes gave the team a welcome boost with them finishing 3rd in the A and B 200m and then helping the relay team to 2nd place. Ben Fawcett gained 11.29m to finish 2nd in the Triple Jump and also got 6th in the 400m. Andrew Revell had a busy day, he came 2nd in the 800m with 2.08, 3rd in the 1500m in 4.27 and 2nd in the 400m in 56.9. Paul Roberts won the B discus with 20.39m, came 3rd in the shot with 10.47m and 4th in the javelin. Theo Moore came 2nd in the Hammer and shot, and 3rd in the A discus with 25.75m.

The U17 girls won their section with good performances in the jumps. Charlotte Shelley won the Long Jump with 5.01m, the High Jump with 1.53m after finishing 3rd in the hurdles. Jess Crissell after her dash across country got a pb of 4.97m to win the B Long Jump and then won the Triple Jump with 10.57m. Lucy Barnes came 2nd in the 1500m, 5th in the 800m and again impressed with her discus in finishing 2nd with 23.04m. Rosemary Aldous came 2nd in the shot and hammer before winning the B discus. Emily Robinson stepped up an age group to get a pb in the 300m with 44.7. Earlier Reniks Akintajy came 3rd in the 100m and 200m with her partner Chloe Cooper also finishing 3rd in the B races.

July/Augusts Road Running Report By Neil Gillingham

The Friday 5 series came to its conclusion on the 9th July at Great Bentley on a very hot evening. The race saw two Harriers in action. James Powley ran a fantastic race to place 3rd overall and 1st junior home in a time of 27m54s. The second Harrier home was Neil Gillingham in 184th position in a time of 38m35s. A total of 376 athletes completed the course.

At the end of the series, athletes who completed in at least 4 of the 5 races received a series completion medal and a position in their respective age group in the Friday 5 series. The only Harrier to complete the series was Neil Gillingham who finished a creditable 22nd position in the senior men’s age group.

Next up was the Brantham 5 mile race held on 23rd July and saw a strong Ipswich Harriers showing with four athletes taking part and three receiving trophies for their efforts. First Harrier home was Shaun Webb who took overall victory in a time of 27m32s and took home the winners trophy. Chasing Shaun home was Simon Gardiner who placed 3rd in a time of 27m52s to take home the 3rd place trophy. Andrew Tanner was then the next Harrier to complete the 5 mile course finishing in 11th position in a time of 29m26s and was rewarded with a trophy for being the 1st local runner home. The fourth Harrier to complete the course was Neil Gillingham finishing in 33rd position in a time of 33m25s. A total of 164 athletes finished this race.

On Wednesday 4th August the last race of the Bungay 10k Summer Series took place. Harriers had one athlete taking part. Tonya Antonis finished the race in 38th position overall and 2nd women in a time of 42m54s.

The Adnams 20th Anniversary Great Yarmouth Half Marathon took place on 15th August and saw one Harrier attempting the race. Neil Gillingham took part in the race and was rewarded with a time of 99m52s to place 89th. A total of 280 completed the half marathon course.

On a wet 25th August the Wroxham 5k took place and Neil Gillingham took part and completed the course in a new personal best of 19m39s finishing in 61st position. A total of 280 people finished the race.

On the 29th August approximately 1000 people took to the streets of Ipswich to take part in the Ipswich Half Marathon and three of these were Harriers. Chris Rooke in his debut over the distance finished a fantastic second in a time of 1h10m36s. As this is an undulating course surely a sub 70 min half marathon on the right course can’t be to far away!! Second Harrier home was Simon Gardiner in a new personal best of 1h23m07s in 16th position. Following home both these fine performances was Neil Gillingham in 186th position recording a finishing time of 1h43m06s. There were a total of 770 finishers in the half marathon. Entry for next years Ipswich Half Marathon, which is to be held on 25th September, has opened already and further details can be found on www.ipswichjaffa.org.uk

National Junior League

The Southern Promotional final for the National Junior Athletic League took place at the Barnet Copthall Stadium with the Saxons needing to finish in the top 2 to ensure another season of top class athletics. They were up against some top class teams, particularly Basildon Beagles and Havering and Mayesbrook, but with a full complement, the team were in confident mood.

The initial events put the Saxons ahead. Nancy Epsley won the Pole Vault with Chelsea Coker getting 3rd in the A shot and Evie Castle winning the B event. Ben Clark got 6.45m to finish 3rd in the Long Jump with Ross Fawcett getting 5th. Theo Moore then produced a pb of 26.67m in the hammer to ensure a good start.

There was then a flurry of activity on the track with an extremely tough 100m event where Tom Powell came 7th and Daniel Green 5th in the B race with a pb of 11.83. Hannah Smithdale and Georgia Atkins performed very well to get 2nd and 1st in the A and B races respectively. Lauren Bouchard produced a sb of 59.34 to finish 2nd in the A 400m with Caroline Hill also gaining 2nd in the B race. Dan Green stepped up to the 400m to get 4th place with Matt Constable coming 3rd in 54.7. Andy Constable then came 2nd in the 800m with Chris Youell 5th, shortly after Jessica Judd won the womens race with Lucy Barnes coming 2nd in the B race.

The next group of field events provided clean sweeps for the Saxons. Chelsea Coker (43.66m) and Georgina Howe (39.95m) won both Hammer events for the women. Matti Mortimer won the javelin with a superb 65.42m and the improving Paul Dowding getting a pb of 53.53m to win the B Javelin throw. Georgia Atkins won the Long Jump with 5.36m and Ellie Besford the B jump with 4.58m.

Back on the track, Bradley Reed came 3rd in the 110m hurdles with a pb of 15.34 after Georgia Atkins won the 100m hurdles with Evie Castle getting 3rd place in the B race. In between Jessica Judd was very impressive winning the 3K against 2 very good athletes. Each time they challenged she was able to pull away and eventually won by 4 seconds. Ross Fawcett and Tim Byford came 5th and 3rd in their 3K race.

At this point Saxons were still ahead of their nearest rivals and all looked set for a comfortable victory. However, the competition in this league is fierce and Basildon in particular were edging ever closer. In the remaining womens field events, the versatile Evie Castle came 3rd in the javelin with Jess Crissell coming 7th and then convincingly winning the Triple Jump. Georgia Atkins got a sb of 1.55m for third place in the High Jump with Hayley McLean winning the B with 1.50m. Then a major boost for the team came with another clean sweep for Chelsea Coker and Georgina Howe in the discus.

Theo Moore managed 7th place in the shot and 3rd in the discus with Matti Mortimer getting 3rd in the A discus with 36.71m. Liam Yarwood attained 3.65m for 2nd place in the Pole Vault with Ben Clark clinching the B event. It was at this point that the news came that Basildon were ahead, and Havering only a point behind.

Therefore the remaining track events were quite tense. Basildon and Havering gained a brief advantage in the mens 200m before a clean sweep by Lauren Bouchard and Hannah Smithdale in the womens event retrieved the situation. Tim Byford and Ross Fawcett performed miracles in gaining valuable points in the mens 1500m and then after a short gap got up and ran the 2K steeplechase showing great team spirit. Katie-Ann Tuttlebury won the womens 1500m with Emma Burroughs getting 4th in the B race. The 4x100m relays provided 6th place for the men but the women won comfortably. This regained the lead for the Saxons, but it was a narrow margin and it all rested on the 4x400m. The men finished 4th albeit with a SB of 3.38, and then it was down to the women who got 2nd place and then there was a wait for the overall match result.

In the end Saxons retained their place in the Premier Division with a victory over Basildon by just 4 points, and congratulations to them for a good contest who will join us next season in the top league. Matti Mortimer also won the Athlete of the Match award, the 2nd time this season he has won it, a remarkable feat.
