industries. Our investments over the previous years proved to be a strong foundation for our continued growth in these industries. Furthermore, we expanded our workforce more than ever with a clear direction towards those business segments in which we believe our strategic growth options will materialise.

Our continuous strive for operational excellence has been further developed in the past year, we have been able to attract lots of new talent for both our internal organization and our valued customers. This is supported by our brand new ‘iPS academy’, which provides tailor-made assessment and training opportunities and includes our yearly customer and employee satisfaction surveys. We rebranded our search and selection team to Permanent Staffing, and expanded the team with industry professionals with strong focus on our growth markets. We enlarged our QHSE certifications to include all our foreign offices and have now reached worldwide coverage. Our international payroll knowledge has been further and successfully increased, and our professionalism in this regard has been acknowledged by many new clients.

The year 2016 can be characterised as ‘changing in challenging times’. iPS has changed a lot in the past year: We opened our new headquarters in Capelle aan den IJssel at the end of Q1, and our Scheveningen office, the home base of our energy team, moved to a new location with more than double the floor space. These developments were all triggered by the strong growth iPS has been experiencing in recent years. The lay-out and interior design of our new offices clearly aligns with our organizational key ambitions: solution driven, transparent, compliant, proactive and specialised. We have created a work atmosphere which breaths the eagerness and results which drive our teams.

‘Challenging’ relates to the challenging environment our industries have been in over the year: from a rather unpredictable breeze in the previous year, the business climate especially in the oil and gas related segments changed into a storm in the year 2016. iPS concentrated all its commercial strength towards the businesses which still showed growth trends, the majority related to the renewable

PERMANENT STAFFING DEPARTMENT

“FIND THE PERFECT MATCH”

PERMANENT STAFFING HAS BECOME AN IMPORTANT

PILLAR OF iPS, AIMING AT THE SEARCH & SELECTION

OF PROFESSIONALS. SEE BELOW BAS KOOTER’S

OPINION, MANAGER PERMANENT STAFFING OF iPS.

Bas Kooter

10

“In the last ten years since I have been working in the field of recruitment a lot has changed. Being in this industry for this period of time requires motivation and mine is quite simple: I get to be a significant part of a candidate’s career by talking about his or her ambitions, which is very satisfying. In addition to that, it is amazing to be able to act as a partner towards our clients, working customer satisfaction based. I think the best motivation is to find the perfect match between supply and demand. The scarcity of qualified personnel is one of the biggest challenges out there: my team has to excel in order to find good matches between candidates and clients. The more professionally we act, the better we will be. It is that simple!

A few years ago, I worked as a corporate recruiter at another company. At that time I came into contact with Nick Spies, one of the directors of iPS. Nick told me about his plans for the company, including the Permanent Staffing Department

and the aim to further professionalise the company. It sounded like a real challenge and I wanted to be part of it.

In my job, every day is different. We try to work as efficiently as possible. If I had to describe my job in four words, I would say: Dynamic, Ambitious, Innovative and Team work.

Currently, we are launching a new concept called ‘Customers’ Choice’. Customers’ Choice offers clients the opportunity to choose the service they are looking for. Our clients just pay for what they want us to do, nothing else. That is just great. It is known that a lot of companies work with no-cure-no-pay procedures. However, this means that these companies are not self-confident: they need the consult of other agencies during the process. This means that several agencies are using the same resources and probably will be offering the same candidates. Our ‘Customers’ Choice’ offers more dedication towards clients and above all it saves costs.

Many years ago iPS started as a search and selection company but nowadays we are mainly known for our crewing solutions. Search and selection of professionals will be a big asset within our company. Personnel, projects and payroll, we deliver it all, for all levels of employment. That’s what makes us the one-stop shop within the Maritime, Energy and Civil industries.

My forecast of the next five years… Permanent Staffing will internationally be integrated within iPS. It is important for us to position ourselves as a partner for the market and our customers. With over 28 years of experience and knowledge we can be an asset for companies worldwide.”

THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT IS EXPECTED TO KEEP THE BUSINESS

RUNNING. IT IS LOCATED AT THE HEAD OFFICES AND MANAGES ALL

CROSS BORDER FINANCING AND PAYROLLING FOR iPS. PATRICK MANS

IS THE DEPARTMENT MANAGER.

13

“As manager of the Finance Department within iPS I am responsible for cross-border pay-rolling, which is part of our very fast developing business. I started to work here five years ago, right after graduating from university. During my university years, I worked part-time at a small accountancy company. A couple of months before I graduated, I received an e-mail from Rob Kooijmans, one of the directors, asking me if I would be interested to do a job interview with him. That was my first contact with the company. At that moment I could never have guessed I would be in this position today.

To see how the company has developed over the past five years, makes me feel very proud. My team, of approximately 20 people, and I are responsible for managing finances worldwide and for international pay-rolling within the company. Because of my ambition, I want to develop myself every single day: I am too young [28 years old ED.] to settle for less within my job. Improving company processes drive me. I experience my working environment as dynamic, unpredictable, and it also requires me to be flexible, which are all motivating factors for me. We get a lot of ad hoc requests from our clients, we have a lot of contracts that need to be sent out and our employees need to be paid correctly and in good time. Many things are going on, especially

things that can’t be foreseen. In the last five years I have actually never experienced an ordinary, boring day.

Considering our company right now, we have taken many steps forward, including our MSF system. Because our markets and industries develop so fast, we needed to create an accurate and always up-to-date system. Last year we worked on the implementation of the latest version of MSF. We can’t work efficiently when our systems are outdated, so upgrading is really important for us in order to serve the business in the best possible way. In order to satisfy our clients, our database contains an enormeous amount of résumés and potential candidates. This system helps us to be accurate and in time since we don’t have to search through the internet to find a candidate.

Moving to our new office last year was definitely a highlight for us. Furthermore, we did quite a good job with the Suez Canal project in 2015, which deepened and widened to accommodate larger ships. Another great project was the Gemini project, which is one of the world’s biggest wind farms. From the moment in 2017 this wind farm wil be in use, it will generate lean and endless renewable wind energy for 1.5 million people in the Netherlands. It is expected that the wind farm will reduce the Dutch CO2 emissions by 1.25 million tonnes

“SERVE THE BUSINESSIN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY”

per year. Therefore Gemini will play an important role in the global transition towards a more sustainable future.

Next to our core business we are getting more and more involved in cross-border employment. In 2016 we expanded our payroll services, now we serve clients who employ people worldwide. From our experience we know that cross-border employment comes with complicated tax and social security issues. Payrolling is a very complex matter for companies, because they have to know, understand and correctly execute the applicable legislation.Staffing in general and managing payrolls specifically has become our field of expertise due to years of experience. We have in-depth knowledge, we can ensure that our clients are able to operate in accordance with all current legislation. We support our clients by scanning their payroll administration, we advise them on improvements and compliance and offer them the best solutions.”

INTERVIEW: GERTJAN DAVIDZON

“iPS PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR GROWTH PROCESS”Apart from personnel, we also provide our clients with payroll services. Nature Group is a leading maritime, oil and gas waste collection and treatment company with over 30 years of experience across the globe.

Gertjan Davidzon has been Managing Director of the oil and gas division at Nature Group for a year now, after having worked in the same position with another company for three years. Before that he worked in the oil trade for eight years. “I know iPS via my former employer. We needed to payroll employees from different countries and that was very difficult regarding salaries and taxes. That is where iPS stepped in. From that moment on, iPS took care of the paperwork, so we did not have to worry about that. My contact with Patrick Mans is agreeable, just like with my former contact person, Nick Spies.

I have experienced both men as being professional, punctual and, importantly, able to solve problems to everyone’s satisfaction.

I always like to describe my job as entrepreneurial and self-building. Acquiring new clients and deserving their appreciation, makes it all worthwhile. Apart from that, our company contributes to a more sustainable oil and gas sector, which is a very noble goal and a factor that I really care about.

In the beginning I liked making great deals, but what matters to me now isn’t only making our industry a little greener but also making it work economically, otherwise it can’t be sustainable. We have to abide by very strict governmental regulations with our clients and aim to be effective by finding solutions that will outdo our predecessors. At the moment we clean offshore waste water at source,

which is our claim to fame. Treatment at source reduces treatment costs onshore and minimises logistic movements and therefore costs and CO2 emission.

To give an example: we had a project in Canada where the rig was located at a distance of a 2-3 day boat trip. All of the rainwater on the platform was captured, apart from their actual drilling waste. Their waste got up to 2000-3000 cubic meters per month. We were able to reduce it by 98%. The seas around Canada are seen as a particularly sensitive environment. Thanks to our treatment, we were able to reduce traffic to and from the platform and traffic from the shore to the treatment facility. To reduce traffic is to reduce pollution and to avoid extra costs. We have helped our partners to lower their costs and prevented the environment from getting more polluted.

Liquid waste, or slops as it is called in the oil and gas industry, is water polluted with oil and a variety of chemicals used during the drilling process. We treat the slops in order to produce clean (salty) seawater and a small part of oil / chemicals and solids (crushed rock from the drilling). This water is then discharged into the sea in a controlled manner. The remaining 2-5% of sludge (instead of 100%) is brought back to shore for treatment / disposal. The percentages of treated clean water depend on the amount of water present in the slop. Platforms that also capture rainwater are definitely frontrunners in clean and efficient drilling practices.

We, as Nature Group, are satisfied with the service iPS provides. We think iPS plays an important role in our growth process Furthermore, we strongly believe that we can make our own contribution to the oil and gas industry by making it more sustainable: we can’t fully rely on renewable energy just yet.”

MARITIME DEPARTMENT

“FUN, FAST AND CHALLENGING”ADRIAAN BROK [MANAGER MARITIME DEPARTMENT, ED.] STARTED AT iPS

ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AGO, HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN WORKING IN THE HR AND

RECRUITMENT INDUSTRY. BACK IN THE DAYS HE HAD A GOOD FRIEND WHOSE

SISTER HAD JUST STARTED WORKING AT iPS. SHE HEARD HE WAS LOOKING

FOR A NEW CHALLENGE AND ADVISED HIM TO APPLY FOR A JOB. THE REST IS

HISTORY.

Adriaan Brok

16

“Once in the office, the first thing I do is prioritising the department email box. We use an open mail box so we can always react quickly and efficiently on incoming requests or other issues. I then prioritise and evaluate if there are any urgent matters that need my immediate attention. Thereafter, I ask my team members if there are any problems that I can assist them with.

The Maritime Department consists of a fantastic group of smart professionals, who have great work ethics, are very positive, and great fun to work with. They put the ‘power’ in ‘powerful’ and give me the energy to keep going for the extra mile. If I can contribute to their well-being and eagerness to keep bringing on their A-game, then my day has been a successful one.

If I had to describe my work in three words, it would be: fun, fast, and challenging. In my role as a manager the challenge lies in the diversity of my work. I must be able to split my

attention on all factors of the work such as commercial or social factors, or just being a manager. Luckily I am well-trained in multi-tasking as a father and a husband.

Occasionally a project is suddenly put on hold due to lack of manpower, for example due to illness. In such cases, we need to react immediately to prevent any delay of the project. Due to our flexible pool of verified candidates we are able to address this matter accurately. We have been working on many different projects, such as the expansion of the Suez Canal and mineral mining in Jordan. Projects in the ‘big boys’ playground’. However, nowadays the work is mostly done by local contractors. Fortunately, we are able to fulfill their needs as well. iPS has global coverage and we have had the privilege to work on a variety of beautiful locations like France and Costa Rica, but also in more challenging environments like Eritrea and Kazakhstan, as well as in

high temperature areas like Qatar and Bahrein.

iPS is growing every day and this is a wonderful thing to experience. When I started working at iPS, the company was considerably smaller. As it grew, I grew along with it which resulted in obtaining my current position. Although the company is continuously growing, it still feels like a family, where everybody is allowed to bring up ideas and, as long as they are substantiated, we are given the space to execute them. Work-life balance is of great importance to me. The good thing about iPS is that it cares for who we are and will support us during the different phases of our lives.

Last but not least, the main success factor of our company are the people we work with. We have a vast pool of personnel, who have been working for us for years all around the world. They have played a major role in the growth of iPS and for that, we thank them.”

Page 17: iPS magazine 2017

“IT IS REALLY SATISFYING,WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER”

What really motivates me the most with regards to this job is the freedom. This is a very unique feeling. Also, the direct line of command and the informal crew is very comforting. Not to forget, the possibility to work on nice projects is also very pleasant.

Most of all, I get a kick out of the responsibility I have. I love it when a project is finished and my team and I can say: we did a good job. I We love it when a plan comes together.

As I said, I know iPS via Van den Herik. They asked me to work via iPS and let them control and execute the payroll. My contact with iPS is very good, informal and direct. Just give them a call and it is fixed, partly due the big Maritime Department with enthusiastic consultants. At the moment many iPS candidates are working at the vessel and I think everyone is very happy with the situation and payments.”

The word goes to Julian Jager, captain of the Charlock. Van den Herik’s newly built seagoing hopper is categorised as a ‘clean ship’. We were invited aboard this amazing vessel and took the opportunity for an interesting interview at sea.

“How I became part of this fascinating industry is quite a funny story. I worked in the Merchant Shipping industry for the last 25 years, of which 16 years at Cargo Ferries. Unfortunately, this came to an end due to industrial related events, which made me search for other opportunities. I saw opportunities in working in offshore, so I was in the process of obtaining the required DP certificates. However, due to the known oil crisis, it didn’t work out as planned. In the summer of 2015 Van den Herik contacted me and asked me to help iPS with developing and commissioning the Charlock and later on, in September, to become captain of this vessel.

Since the completion of the ship we have been working in front of the coast of Zandvoort and Bloemendaal, Holland to move sand in order to strengthen the coastline. We do this by dredging sand 20 km offshore which we then rainbow (throwing sand) or dump in areas just before the coastline located by the client, in this case; the Dutch government. The main goal of this project is protecting the coastline from flooding, by strengthening the coastline with extra sand.

Thinking of a typical day at work, I can describe it by waking up early, having a good cup of coffee and then starting my shift as a captain at noon. This shift ends at midnight, which means that our working days are twelve hours. When I’m off work I try to get as much sleep as possible, since a good night sleep isn’t always guaranteed. Me getting some sleep does not mean that the work of the vessel is done, as it is an 24/7 functioning vessel where the other shift is completed by our first mate and his team.

If I am not wrong, Van den Herik and iPS started doing business when Van den Herik began working, with seagoing vessels, which was about ten years ago. Our contact with iPS is very satisfying as I speak with Sharon Brouwer [Consultant Maritime Department, Ed.] on a weekly basis, if not more. She has quite a good feeling for our needs and that is something we really appreciate.

Compared to other recruitment and crewing agencies, iPS has a very fast response time. Also, they have a large database with suitable candidates to offer. For us it is very advantageous to consult iPS because we have the opportunity to get to know potential candidates before hiring them. We hope we will continue doing business for many years.”

19

“My function is head of equipment and logistics. It has been sixteen years since I started working at Van den Herik, of which seven years in my current position. My responsibilities cover all activities concerning the vessels, the presence of the crew on board of the vessels and taking care of the certificates of the inland shipping and seagoing vessels. I consider my job as challenging because it is very diverse. I work with many people from different levels and none of my working days are the same.

Van den Herik is a family business. The last decades, the economic crisis excepted, we have desired to expand our business. We still have that desire and aim to pursue it. Given the complexity of new projects, we need more equipment and more manpower for preparation and performance.

Dredging is one of our core businesses and we operate all over Europe. Van den Herik does inland dredging, hydraulic engineering and sand supplementation. In the Netherlands, we do sand supplementation in Bloemendaal, we dredge in the

Eemsgeul, we keep the depth of the IJssel under control and maintain dikes. Abroad, we are for example busy in France where we dredge four ports. It concerns a 3-year maintenance project, which we are not allowed to continue during the summers. We also do a project in Hamburg, Germany, where we assist in the widening of a section of the port.

Our latest hopper, Charlock, was delivered in February 2016. Its dimensions are nearly 100 by 21 meters. It is able to carry 3,000 cubic meters of sand along with the crew and works along the Dutch coast. Before, we only had the Christophorus, but we realised we needed to have a bigger vessel, so we decided to invest in the Charlock to expand our capacity. The Charlock is labeled as ’green‘, since it has a lower CO² emission compared to its predecessors. Also, because of Charlock’s bigger capacity, we are able to enter new markets.

I took over this position from my former colleague seven years ago. For as long as I am in this position I remember doing business with iPS.

“BE FLEXIBLE,OBSERVE CLOSELY AND REACT RAPIDLY”SOMETIMES AN INTERVIEW WITH TWO PEOPLE IS JUST BETTER. THIS

OCCURRED WHEN WE MET DIDIER JANSSENS AND STIJN GEERAERTS

FROM SCALDIS. THEY HAVE WORKED FOR THE COMPANY FOR 9 AND

2.5 YEARS RESPECTIVELY.

“The relationship between Scaldis and iPS exists for a long time, Didier explains. The two companies already co-operated 12 years ago, when I was doing my internship. The benefits of iPS have always been its vast database, experience and ability to deliver stacks of CV’s and profiles at short notice. As Scaldis works in

various sectors within the offshore industry, the capability of iPS to deliver the specific profiles for every project within all markets is a huge plus.

The contact with the consultants can be described as very good because their perception of what is required

matches with our requirements. We just need a few words to understand each other. The colleagues know what we want and know directly who to contact. Sometimes iPS hands over profiles which may not match for the full 100%, but still might be interesting for the project. We appreciate this advisory role, it is of high value to us.

INTERVIEW: BENNO SCHRIJVER

21

“4 WEEKS ON, 4 WEEKS OFF”Some of our candidates have been working for us for quite some time. These people are versatile and possess the required certificates for both offshore and maritime related work activities. A man to whom this certainly applies is Benno Schrijver. Benno has over 16 years of experience as a mechanic within the offshore industry as well as an engineer within the maritime world. His latest job title was second engineer up to 3,000 kWh. We had a conversation with him.

“What really motivates me is the fun I have in doing these types of jobs. In my free time, I like tinkering with motorbikes, so basically my work is a well-paid hobby. My relationship with iPS dates from 2007, when iPS director Nick Spies asked me to work as a welder on oil and gas fields in the North Sea for client Boskalis. Ever since I have worked for many impressive

companies like Deme, Heerema, Jack-Up Barge, Jan de Nul and Stemat.

The latest project I worked on was on a heavy ship through Dockwise. There was a chance to learn a lot over there and I had a very good contact with the Dutch crew. It was a nice vibe. In my job I am able to co-operate with all kinds of people, which creates a nice work environment as we are all focused on getting the job done. Sure, from time to time people have preconceived notions about temporary workers, but then it’s up to me to show they are wrong. This is normally no problem at all for me.

The contact between iPS and me is good and personal. The company influenced my career in a positive way, as it provided me with lots of work opportunities as well as education / training. I will shortly follow another course to become chief engineer and I’m really thankful for this chance. These developments really stand out when I look back at my career. It also works both ways as it will be a lot easier for iPS to introduce me to a client.

If we had to describe our work in just three words they would be, “Flexibility, Respect and Challenge”. Responsibility is also very important in our career and work field; we have to make quick decisions and respond accurately to sudden events, for example, weather changes or failure in mechanics. A small example of an abrupt change is when the weather turns so bad that we have to bring tugs and pantones inside the harbour to get shelter. In order to reduce logistic work as well as save costs, this might be a good moment to do a crew change.

What we like most is the diversity in projects when we come across new challenges. For example, in the continuously changing offshore industry you have to be flexible, observe closely and react rapidly. You are always working with people: not just your own crew, but also clients

and suppliers. There has to be a willingness inside you to be available 24/7 during some projects. It is a satisfying job because you must respond quickly (and creatively) to unforeseen events and when it turns out well, it makes you proud. When we look ahead, we think that the decommissioning industry will grow in the coming years. In this industry, it’s difficult to plan ahead, which makes it diverse and interesting. Also renewables are a growing market. The fun thing is that most people only think of windmills when you talk about renewables, but there is more. For example, on the British coast we have installed a turbine at a place where currents change heavily. A good way to produce energy. This specific project was very good and the final result was amazing; this turbine was placed so well that it was 2 cm from the original planned place. Our prediction is that

we will do more of these projects in the near future, it is still a young market.

The next project will be extending our fleet with the Gulliver in 2017. More information can be found in the facts on top of this interview. Scaldis has ordered this ship taking into consideration further support and expansion of its services, including the installation of offshore infrastructure and decommissioning activities in deep water for the oil and gas industry and the installation of offshore wind farms. In addition to that, the ship can also be used for all sorts of heavy lifting work in challenging situations, such as the construction of bridge components and clearing shipwrecks.”

My typical day at work is a bit hard to explain, due to the variety of jobs I have had. Normally I wake up about two hours before the beginning of my workday in order to get ready at a slow pace. A cup of coffee, a cigarette, talking a bit with the colleagues of the other shift, having some breakfast and then go to work. My working day is normally 12 hours and I mostly work ‘4 weeks on, 4 weeks off’.My family is used to this schedule and when I see them, I am able to spend a lot of time with them during my off period. I am one of the few dads who could pick up their children from school when they were little.”

“Every day brings a new challenge and adventure, and we dedicate most of our time to being in contact with the client and the candidate.”

Every time we are able to bring the quality and the right skills together to fulfil the needs of our clients and of our candidates, it can be considered as a highlight and every member of our team feels the joy when achieving this.

What stands out for me is the fact that we deliver personnel for large scale projects worldwide, either for renewable industry, offshore construction, oil and gas or pipe laying projects. Considering we offer a lot of people the opportunity to gain experience in a unique sector, I am happy to be a part of iPS. Everything we do has impact. If I had to describe my job, I would say: ‘Matchmaking for Powerful Professionals’.

We have been very much involved in the Gemini project with Van Oord, which was one of the biggest projects for our Department, a very proud achievement. We have supported our clients very productively. Being a small team counting 5 / 6 members, I think it is impressive that we have participated in one of the biggest projects in Europe and that we have played such an important role in the success of our clients.

In 5 to 10 years I definitely see myself being right where I am now, continuing to assist my team and iPS, but I hope to have brought the team to a worldwide client reach. iPS is in a position to keep growing. I believe what makes us different is our personal touch, the fact that we try to ensure transparency in all we do, for both our clients as well as our candidates, and that we always support our key personnel around the world.”

“Our Department is responsible for oil and gas activities, offshore constructions and installations, and the offshore renewable sector. I have been working in the recruitment industry for ten years, six of which in the oil and gas sector. I have been working with iPS for over two years now.

Recently, I took on the role of manager for the offshore / oil and gas division, and I want to continue managing it, and guiding the team to further growth, reaching for the global market for both white and blue colour positions, whilst maintaining the local trusted presence that our clients and candidates require from us.

The energy, the diversity and the fact that this industry is very dynamic, is what keeps me going. It is also satisfying to help both parties, to

match the clients and candidates. That always motivates me to find the best of the best. A few years ago I was working in a similar role but within a slightly different industry. One day I met up with one of my ex-colleagues, who was now working for iPS. He said: ‘Come and have a chat with us!’ The rest is history.

There is no such thing as a typical day at the office. Every day brings new challenges and adventures, and we dedicate most of our time to being in contact with clients and candidates. We are continuously busy making matches between the two. We often hear the word ‘No’ but that is normal in such a complicated and technical industry. Fortunately, we also receive very positive feedback. When we manage to find the perfect match between client and candidate, it becomes a highlight, a job well done.

INTERVIEW: BOB SLOT

“RESPONSIBLE FOR JB-114 AND JB-118”

“Working in Dubai differs greatly from working in Europe. Here in Dubai, you need all kind of approvals and certificates before you are allowed on a job site. Strict security measures have to be taken. In addition, you work with a lot of different cultures with dissimilar attitudes which can make it a bit challenging from time to time. What I like most however, is the continuous nice weather; you open the curtains in the morning and the sun is shining. When I am talking to the Dutch co-workers in the Netherlands and they update me about the cold and rainy weather, I think to myself: in my fridge it is eight degrees and outside it is 40, lovely. I just started at J-UB a year ago, yet I have worked within the maritime and offshore industry my whole life. At first I was working in the field as officer and mechanical engineer, but 20 years ago I made the switch to onshore. Currently, I am responsible for general management, day to day planning. We have two Jack Up Barge islands here in the UAE. Both JB-114 and JB-118 are my responsibility. The local team consists of two individuals, although we can always rely on our Dutch colleagues for backup and assistance. Communication lines

within the company are very short and we operate in close interaction. The owner of J-UB is here once a month.

It is pretty hard to describe my job in just three words, but if I have to, it would be: ‘Challenge, Responsibility and Hobby’. This job is basically my hobby. My working week consists of seven days as our industry does not stop in the weekend. I am used to working every day, I grew up with it. Besides, the average working week in this area already consists of five and a half to six days at the office, which is indeed longer than in Western Europe. What I really like is the moment we get an inspection and the inspectors are so satisfied with what they see, they give us compliments. It is really important for us that clients are content, so therefore maintenance and cleaning are valued highly. To illustrate that: we are not painting over rust, which is what other companies sometimes do. We really start from scratch in order to make our islands as good as new. The crew truly does a good job and this aspect means that our clients are more than willing to keep contracting us. There is a lot of competition out here and we are not the cheapest, so they come back for our quality and service.

24

iPS and I go way back. J-UB was already working with the company before I arrived. After taking some budgettary measures during the crisis, iPS came back strong; currently, the company is our preferred supplier. We recruit a lot of people ourselves and when we do, we place them under the wings of iPS for payment, certifications, education etc.

My daily contact is with Boudewijn Blatter [Manager Middle East, Ed.] and we genuinely speak the same language. The biggest benefit of iPS is that it has direct contact in the region. For instance, I remember that Boudewijn called me in the middle of the night with the news of an urgent accident with a candidate. We took instant action in order to solve the problem as soon as possible. We succeeded in bringing the unfortunate candidate into the port at 6AM and at 9AM he was on board of an airplane on the way home. The coordination and short communication lines during this event were superb. The direct contact, 24/7 availability and the settlement in this region are really important for me and therefore a big plus for iPS.”

WITH OFFICES WORLDWIDE, WE ALWAYS TRY TO ASSIST OUR CLIENTS AS

WELL AS WE POSSIBLY CAN. A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THIS IS ONE OF OUR MOST

VALUED CLIENTS; JACK-UP BARGE. BOB SLOT IS J-UB’S REGIONAL MANAGER

FOR THE MIDDLE EAST AND EAST AFRICA REGIONS AND THEREFORE OUR

LOCAL CONTACT PERSON. HE HAS BEEN LIVING IN DUBAI SINCE 2011 AND

ABSOLUTELY LOVES IT OVER THERE.

INTERVIEW: MIGUEL VAZ SENA

Miguel Vaz Sena is of Portuguese origin. As Portugal is a country with a little offshore tradition, it might be extra interesting to hear the story of this experienced offshore superintendent on board of the Rock Placement Vessel DPFPV – DP2 Seahorse.

“For me, a typical day always starts with a strong cup of coffee. During the day I receive and provide feedback to my team, in order to program and control operations. Meetings are held with the vessel management and client parties, and decisions and plans are made accordingly, in order to optimise the operations offshore. Preparation is key to having a smooth and safe project execution.

Every day is different, every project has its own challenges and peculiarity.

There is no such thing as routine and that is exactly what keeps me going. Having a motivated team, who work together as one, and who follow up on my plans and decisions, plays a big part in the motivation I have for my work.

Over the past months I have been involved in several projects, but I will outline the Arctic Loading Terminal project, due to its remote location at the Yamal-Nenets region of Russia. On board the DPFPV Seahorse the work environment is professional and friendly at the same time. We have different nationalities on board, which makes it a rich and multicultural work environment and the end the results profit from this diversity. Additionally, the food on board is excellent!

Back home, when I try to explain what I do for a living, people react with ‘that’s incredible, I was not aware

that this was possible’. When I hear this, I feel very fortunate to be part of the offshore business, working under extreme conditions and playing a role in today’s world energy needs.

My first contact with iPS was while working in Ciudad de Carmen in Mexico. The company I worked for was using iPS’ services to have key personnel on board of their vessels, so I already had the pleasure of working with Boudewijn Blatter and Guido van der Zwet [Manager Americas, Ed.]. Over the years I got to know quite a few people at iPS and I can say that they are a team that are always willing to help you and always looking for your next project. I have direct contact with my employer every day, either via reporting, meetings or conference calls. Communication flows, infor-mation is shared and decisions are made. It is a pleasure working for iPS.”

“I BELIEVE IN SHARING KNOWLEDGE”

is a significant networking event that brings together the main players of the UK Tunnel industry.

My career has allowed me the opportunity to work in numerous countries and on a wonderful selection of projects, I have been lucky enough to have been involved in some of the most prestigious projects around the world. I have also been fortunate enough to make friends with some fantastic people, and I am still in touch with people I became friends with in the past forty years. I feel I am having the opportunity to leave behind a legacy of creations as well as having been able to further the education of some of the people I have met, thus perpetuating the knowledge I have gained over the years. I firmly believe in sharing knowledge that I have been fortunate enough to learn.

Like everyone else, I also have personal goals; I want to make my Department a key part of the iPS success story. By nature, I am a competitive person and I always want to do my best and be respected for that. I also want the iPS Tunnelling Department to stay successful, even if I retire one day. I want to establish that iPS is considered a well-respected and responsible employer that our employees feel proud of.

Since October 2014, throughout 2015 and up to 2016 the Bangalore metro project has been a key project for me: a very challenging project that other companies had given up on. My aim has been to make this a building block for future projects in India and perhaps even worldwide. If I were to

“I have been in the tunnelling and civil construction industry for 48 years. I got to know iPS while I was working for international contractors and some iPS people were integrated into our workforce.

I am definitely motivated to achieve the best possible results for iPS, our personnel and our clients. I like facing the daily challenges of this industry and I surely enjoy finding solutions for worldwide projects.

My typical work day revolves around steering the Department activities, studying journals to keep abreast of latest developments in the industry, networking to maintain contact with ex colleagues and clients, refining commercial proposals to provide competitive rates to clients, plus the usual e-mails and phone calls.

Last year was full of highlights for us. In April we were present at Bauma 2016, which is a very prestigious exhibition, classified as the largest in the world for the construction industry. All the major players were present, which provided exceptional networking opportunities on an international level. Again in April, we experienced the Bangalore project completion of tunnel excavation. This is quite a milestone for iPS as it represents the first time iPS has taken such responsibility for operating a TBM. The Bangalore project is especially satisfying as the TBM was abandoned underground for 12 months and needed rescuing and refurbishment before we could think of completing the tunnel excavation. In May, we attended the British Tunnelling Society annual dinner. This

describe my job, I would choose the words: ‘Challenging, Frustrating but yet Rewarding’.

We are currently working towards involvement in a number of exciting new projects, such as; the Thames Tideway project London, which will enhance the water treatment system for the population of London; the Northern Line metro extension in London, to provide better underground connection for thousands of commuters on a daily basis, and the Follo Line project in Norway, a rail tunnel project designed to ease travel for commuters into Oslo. Last but not least, there are a number of infrastructure projects in India that offer tremendous opportunities for iPS.

In 5 to 10 years…. This depends on how hard my wife pushes me to retire. But to be serious, I have a fascinating job that has a number of facets, part office work, part project related work (which has formed a major part of my working life and is extremely enjoyable). It also gives me the opportunity to travel to different countries for networking and consultation purposes. In short I don’t anticipate on retiring soon and I aim to remain in charge of the Tunnelling Department for years to come.”

are proud, it is really satisfying. I came across iPS when I was working at the Westerschelde project in the Netherlands about 16 years ago. I have known Barrie Willis [Manager Tunnelling iPS, Ed.] for a long time as I worked together with his father. The current contact with iPS is pleasant. There is never a problem and they are very experienced with timekeeping. I can give them every possible job and they are always happy to accept it and pull it off. They are very co-operative people.”

Our contact person at BBMV is Bryan Roberts (plant superintendent). He hired us iPS deliver Tunnelling professionals for the Whitechapel project. We sat down with him to ask why he choose us.

“My first job was in the year 1969, which involved hard rock tunnelling in Wales. I have been active in this line of work for a long time and it never gets boring. The people in this business are like a family to me as you see the same colleagues every time. You work with them, don’t see them for two years and then you work with them again for several years. A nice ambiance in which I feel very comfortable. A common day at work is very simple: role up your sleeves, get underground and start working. In this world new ideas or technologies are arising constantly, really no two days are alike. Therefore, hardly any new people are coming in; it is an old guys’ game. The

older generation does the hard work in this game, as a team. What I also like: people who are working in the dark have a special attitude. For example: I’m 68 years of age now and I want to keep working as long as I can. My belief is that when you work, you keep yourself active. When I finish a project, I want to enter a new one immediately. Strike while the iron is still hot. If you take a break you get rusty. The good thing about this is that we will always need tunnels, it will never be out of fashion.

The greatest satisfaction is that I am able to create something for the world, to make it better and easier for the people. I have worked abroad a lot and when you finish a project and come back 5 or 6 years later, it is really nice to see what has become of it and to drive through the tunnel. You can actually see what you have worked on and visualise how it was when you were working here. Especially when you show it to your children and they

INTERVIEW: WILLIAM HANLY

“THE WHITECHAPEL PROJECT WILL BE FINISHED ON TIME”

More than 650 people are working on the Whitechapel site, including; William Hanly. We had a talk with the plant fitter from Ireland, who started working in the United Kingdom 30 years ago.

“A typical workday at this site starts with a briefing by the client to one of the senior managers providing tasks that have to be achieved during that day. A member of our mechanical department is present as well in case there is anything on the plant that needs immediate attention. If so, we have to report it right away to keep the production up and running. Down here, we all understand that it is very difficult to work on this project without the mechanical staff. If we would just build these tunnels and

leave them to nature, they would break down very quickly due to lack of support. We would be helpless if we wouldn’t have anyone on the site to solve problems. It is our job, as the client dictates, to keep the downtime of the machine to a minimum. It is really not a normal office job.

That is also what really motivates me. The chance to work and solve problems on such a huge and important infrastructural project gives me a good feeling. The Crossrail project in its whole is the biggest infrastructural project in Europe. It is designed to provide east to west, west to east high speed transportation through the capital and to mobilise millions of people. Another big plus is the fact that the Whitechapel project is progressing very well and will be finished on time.

There are many parties involved and when it all comes together correctly it gives a satisfying vibe.

iPS helped me to get this job. The first contact I had with iPS was when I was approached by iPS’ UK representative, Keith Gill for a project in Sweden. Currently I have contact with both Louise Colle and Rianne Veldmeijer, of the iPS’ Tunnelling Department, who are helpful, very friendly and professional. It is a pleasure to work with iPS as I always get paid on time and the money is pretty good. I would definitely like to continue doing this kind of work for many more years to come.”

PROJECT: BANGALORE METRO

“TO THE RESCUE”Coastal Projects

IN APRIL 2016 WE PROUDLY FINISHED THE BANGALORE METRO PROJECT IN

INDIA. iPS WAS CONTRACTED TO LEAD THE MISSION TO RESCUE, REFURBISH

AND OPERATE THE TBM FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE REMAINING 630

METERS OF TUNNEL EXCAVATION. WE SAT DOWN WITH OUR CLIENT, SHARAD

KUMAR OF COASTAL PROJECTS.

14

We did not know about iPS as they were not operating in India yet. We were looking for a competent tunnelling company to rescue and repair a TBM that had become stuck underground. It was a very difficult project as our TBM got stuck in the ground in the middle of the town and we needed rescuing by a professional. It was even more difficult because they had to deal with an existing team. A lot of knowledge and calculations were needed in order to move forward with the TBM. While searching we found a few names and one of those mentioned iPS. We did further research on their experience by reading through the website and a

Kumar started his career as a tunnel engineer in the tunnelling industry in 1985. At the moment he is the Director of Operations at Coastal Projects.

“I am responsible for all the operations of our company. It is a very challenging job and requires significant industry knowledge to make the right decisions for the company. Coastal Projects is one of the few companies in India that is specialised in underground tunnelling. As Coastal Projects we are proud to say we have managed to become one of the leading tunnelling companies in India. The Bangalore Metro project was the first metro project for our company.

Before taking the metro project we did several other TBM projects. Metro projects are a challenge as they always take place in city centres with the associated space and access restrictions, we also had to ensure the public were not unnecessarily inconvenienced. Safety concerns and timeframe issues also played a role in the whole process. Circumstances and geological challenges made it difficult at times but, in the end, it was a successful project. I think it is important to conduct the work in the right manner acceptable to the client. We have learned a lot and I believe the same goes for the client.

tunnelling magazine. Afterwards we contacted the company.

Our first contact with iPS was with Barrie Willis (manager tunnelling of iPS), who is very knowledgeable. The technical team of iPS is very competent, we were very happy with their in-depth knowledge. It was very satisfactory to work together and get the project done. After it was finished we have heard that the metro capacity was exceeded already within two weeks after the opening of the metro line. In the end, it turned from negativity to positivity. We just had to be patient. Approximately 150.000 people are using the line

every day now. The metros are really good substitutes for road traffic, because they are riding out of sight, underground.

For our next projects we need to make sure we bring the right expertise on the project again. Our intention was to make sure that our Indian crew would acquire technical competencies and run the TBMs by themselves. Normally, when a random company comes in India and brings its own team, the problem is that it does not involve locals much, if not at all. iPS was different in this as it employed quite a number of locals and provided training where needed.

Here in Bangalore we wanted to focus on Indian workers. Ninety to ninety-five percent of our team consisted of locals. We hope to take the same approach for future projects.

I think iPS should be more active in India especially after having completed such a wonderful project as this.”

During the first month, since the opening, about

With some of our candidates we have been working with for ages. A good example of such an employee is our dear old friend Steve Goodall. We asked him to work for us at the Bangalore Metro project, which he currently does. Steve, originally from the UK, has over 32 years of work experience worldwide within the tunnelling industry. A legitimate reason for an interview.

“I came in contact with iPS when I worked at the ‘Westerschelde Tunnel’ project. With 6,600 meters it is still the longest tunnel for highway traffic in the Netherlands. The contact with the Tunnelling Department of iPS goes very smoothly. A real benefit is that we always have good support and back up from the

experienced manager and his staff. The Bangalore Metro tunnel project in India, which has been running since October 2014 up to 2016, was an unbelievable experience! It is very satisfying to see that you bring relief to the local population in such a crowded country and the second most busy city of the sub-continent.

Having big responsibilities on running a major project and having people relying on my knowledge and expertise is a huge motivation for me. My work consists of overseeing the TBM production and maintenance, planning and supervising the compressed air interventions as well as the reporting of all ongoing works. I am also responsible for planning and ordering of material and manpower issues. The main goal is getting the job done and done safely. My shift handover is at 7-7.30 AM

and around 8.30 PM I ‘call it a day’. However, work does not really finish there as calls and reports on any TBM problems keep coming in during the night. There are always issues on every job site so it is all about finding a way to overcome these and to get on. In other words: if it was going to be easy, we wouldn’t be here in India. But it is a challenge that can be overcome with the right mindset. What stands out for me when I think of my job, is definitely the importance of being able to complete projects safely and successfully.

Being able to travel and work at the same time is just the icing on the cake!”

“Since 15th January 2013 I am pleased to be the manager of the Latin America region. Having a challenging job with different clients and different candidates every day motivates me. The Mexican Energy Reform plays an important role in the development of the energy market in Mexico. It is great to be part of this historical event.

I came to this company via the former business manager Latin America, who is a friend of mine. We played

football together in Mexico. The charm of the job is that there is never a boring day. My days are filled with meetings, travelling, events and sometimes administration. Each day I keep contact with the different teams within the local offices: Finance, front office and the office in Ciudad del Carmen. Another big part of the daily activities is business development, which consists of meeting clients, reading the news, approaching new clients and contacts. Another part of an average day is finding candidates, solving day to day administration and management issues, logistics and optimising the services we provide.

The variation of the job and the great team I have around me that gets the job done, is what is important to me. I would describe my job with these three words: ‘Challenging, Flexible and Adventurous’. My personal goal is to become the overall responsible person for the region, to have offices in various countries and cities throughout the Americas. We follow the expanding business and therefore we have to be flexible in our decisions and future plans.

Apart from my management job, I am also active in the Dutch Energy Association, which is a non-profit, self-supporting, pro-active organization that is dedicated to promoting trade, investment and business development between Mexico and the Netherlands in the energy sector.

There were several highlights during the year; I always enjoy the ‘Congreso Mexicano del Petroleo’ which is the biggest trade fair in Mexico in oil and gas, where we meet new and existing clients. Another highlight is at the end of the year, when we try to avoid crew changes between Christmas and New Year. It is always a challenge to have the right people on board in this week. We have done this successfully over the last years and that is a very satisfying feeling. Other challenging highlights are: starting with a new client, the excitement of starting a project, finding the right people.

In 5 to 10 years the Mexican team will be an established name on the Mexican market. We already have a good reputation in the industry but we want to be part of the Energy Reform and grow, together with the new operators and companies coming into Mexico. Plus, we will have a diverse client database and stable growth; we will be known as the most trustworthy and professional personnel provider in Mexico and surrounding countries.”

Gediminas Usas is the director of General Crewing, he has over five years experience in the business.“ We operate in the maritime and offshore industries and established our partnership with iPS in 2014. Since then we have worked closely together. We believe that this partnership is vital for General Crewing’s growth.

Knowing that I am on the right track and I am doing the things that make me sincerely happy, are big motivators for me. To me, my job is interesting, surprising and very fast moving. When I arrive at the office, mostof the times it seems that it will be a quiet day, but usually it turns out to be quite the opposite. At the end of every day I have done so many unexpected things – including fulfilling many vacancies, finding new candidates, motivating our team and increasing our company’s value.

The biggest highlight of last year was the birth of my daughter, I can say that she has changed my life completely. Speaking about business, the oil and gas crisis opened a different attitude to this business. Unexpectedly, many huge companies went bankrupt one after another, which has an enormeous impact on other businesses. You can never stop or start feeling safe and / or comfortable, you always have to look for new opportunities and new challenges. I am happy to have fulfilled my dream, which was to become a director of a well-known company in the maritime industry. I am satisfied with the things I have achieved, but I also want to expand our company in the upcoming years.

I could describe my job as; “Exciting, Dynamic and Authoritative”. My personal goals are to acquire financial freedom and make my family happy. The most important things for me are my baby girl and my wife, I am doing the best to make their dreams come true.

Our team was very excited when we had managed to find a full crew for one of iPS’ projects in a few days, prepared all the documents and sent them on the vessel. This shows that we are a great, team working company, excited about what we are doing. In the last two years my team and I have managed to achieve good things, which makes me feel absolutely satisfied. In 5 to 10 years I hope General Crewing will be the biggest, most valuable and respected crewing company in the Baltic States and we will have 100-200 employees at our head office.”

“I started working for iPS in Mexico, to set up a local office there. After 5 years in Mexico I got the chance to move back to headquarters in the Netherlands and later I moved to the office in Dubai. My current responsibilities cover the Middle Eastern region. It has already been 8 years since I started working with iPS. I like to be able to contribute to the expanding business of iPS, which I definitely see as a motivating factor in my job.Years ago, I was looking for a job in Mexico. I contacted a friend who was working in Mexico and asked him if I

could visit him to look around in his working environment and search for job opportunities. He told me that he had started working with another company in another country, so I kindly asked him to send my CV to his former employer. He did, and later on I received an e-mail from the director of iPS. We arranged a meeting and it appeared that iPS needed someone in Mexico. The match was made and that is how I started working with iPS.

To describe my job, I would use the words, ‘Dynamic, Entrepreneurial and International’. I have a dynamic and flexible job. I don’t spend each day at the office and I get to travel in- and outside the UAE. For example, I get to travel to Bahrain, Iran, Oman and Qatar and many more places. I meet candidates and clients and work on our client base, or try to expand the base and to keep it up to date. A typical day at the office involves being in touch with clients and candidates and searching for new business opportunities. For me, iPS is a very supportive and entrepreneurial company, potential ideas are always supported. We get a lot of room to realise our own initiatives and that is why I feel free in my work. If something should go wrong, I know iPS will always be there to offer assistance. Of course, it is important that we show our best and put effort in our work, but iPS believes in its own people and supports whenever that is necessairy.

Our latest project was with one of our clients, Jack-Up Barge, for International Personnel Supply Offshore Abu Dhabi. This concerned providing all the crew for their barges and providing training, contracts and insurances.

In the near future I hope to have brought iPS to a next level and that our brand will be on a continuously rising spot in this region. I also wish to expand our business to other countries and be responsible for this expansion. Maybe in the United States, Africa or Singapore. Another aim is that companies will not only contact us for recruitment but also for international HR, taxes and payrolling solutions and advice.”

“The way I came across iPS was an unusual coincidence. I was at a birthday party of a friend and got into a conversation with a guy. I mentioned that I was looking for a new challenge and after about three hours we agreed to meet in the office. What I didn’t realise is that I had already past the first interview, because communication is key in this business. You need to be on the road to meet and talk to new people. You can’t plan everything, sometimes the best business relationships start by coincidence.

WITH MAJOR GROWTH

OPPORTUNITIES IN GERMANY,

iPS IS SETTING FOOT IN THIS

MARKET WITH A LOCAL OFFICE

IN HAMBURG. IT IS UP TO SIMON

SCHUMACHER [BUSINESS

MANAGER GERMANY, ED.] TO

BRING IN NEW BUSINESS AND

GET iPS UP TO SPEED IN THIS

INTERESTING MARKET. REASONS

ENOUGH TO INTERVIEW HIM.

In our business there are no typical 9-5 jobs, it is like a rollercoaster going up and down all the time. We need to act on our clients’ needs – you can’t just sit and wait, you need to react. That is why I will be visiting both existing and new clients as we strive to expand our business in the northern region, especially in Germany. Information is vital and it is important to be up to date and search all kinds of newsfeeds for information.

What can be more motivating than building a business from scratch? Hamburg is like an offshore-city where a lot of companies are represented. No need to travel far to meet with a lot of important potential clients. This will enable us to expand our iPS-network. Being new to the business I believe I can develop innovative ideas from a different perspective. Operating worldwide, iPS offers a lot of opportunities, not just now, but also in the future. While the energy industry is growing, building up new businesses will be highly attractive.

I am looking forward to enter this challenge. The services iPS offers do not only help our current clients but are also interesting for our future clients. It is very exciting to be part of the Offshore Wind Sector and to play a part in creating a greener planet. It isn’t only supply and demand but also having a good relationship with the client and being able to anticipate on their needs and deliver accordingly.

Listening is key if you want to add value for your clients.

Since I joined iPS, one of the highlights has been my visit to WindEnergy in Hamburg in September. This conference provides a good platform for the offshore business in the Northern European Market and, of course, especially in Germany. Besides that I had the chance to visit Van Oord’s ‘Aeolis’, one of the biggest Jack-Up Barge vessels operating in the North Sea. The size of the vessel is fascinating and it is important to see what the people we are providing have to deal with on a daily basis.

Starting the office in Germany offers a unique opportunity for iPS and myself. Our principal goal is to expand the existing network in Germany. Although I have just started at iPS, it already feels like family. I have noticed that the company really takes care of all its employees. There is a good work-life balance, which is very important because business development is more like a marathon then a ‘100 meters sprint’. iPS has already worked for several companies involved in German projects. I am convinced that there are many opportunities for iPS to build up a good foundation for the future. With that in mind we have the best qualifications for a bright future. I look forward to personally building up a team in Germany: sharing the vision, establishing goals, training the team, and watching the results.”

WITH OUR GROWING COMPANY, THE NEED OF A

GLOBAL HR MANAGER ALSO STARTED GETTING

BIGGER. SINCE MAY 2016, A NEW HR POSITION WAS

CREATED TO SERVE OUR OFFICES WORLDWIDE. OUR

GLOBAL HR MANAGER TELLS US HER STORY.

We started off relatively small and were able to grow over time. A new environment always feels like a new and refreshing job to me, and the continuous growth is very motivating. Due to the expansion of iPS, a focus for internal HR became necessary.

All staff registrations of our offices around the world are being done by me in our headquarters, so there is one spirit, one company worldwide. It also gives me the chance to get to know all staff members regardless of the office they work for. Recently we have introduced the iPS Academy. It offers introductions and trainings for our (new) staff members into our working environment and systems. Besides that, the iPS Academy can also be used by our existing staff members who wish to do trainings for self-development.

I think we can say that I experience daily highlights, in completing daily tasks. On the other hand, I think the ultimate highlight of last year was the

move of our office. As said earlier, a new environment is refreshing and gives a feeling of having a new job. However, my own development also is a key issue for me. I started working here as a secretary and developed myself executing several functions. Last year I went from a dual manager position to be Global HR Manager and that definitely stands out for me.

If I were to describe my job I would say: ‘Challenging, Encouraging and Family-like’. I have been here for over seventeen years now, so this company feels like I am at home. It literally feels like my second home. I try my best to be a good Global HR manager. Next to that I try my best to be continuously up to date by following trainings for further self-development.

Last year I was involved in a side-project next to my regular tasks. There is a Dutch Law regarding protection of personal employees’ information. Together with my colleagues from Legal, ICT and QHSE backgrounds, we have formed a privacy team to write a new policy to protect all personal data in conformity with Dutch legislation.

In 5 to 10 years I see myself still doing the job of Global HR manager within the iPS organization. Last year, when I still worked in the dual position, I was aiming on working with a HR focus. So I am pleased to see that this wish has been fulfilled.”

“My name is Marisa Suijker, I am Global HR Manager with iPS since May 2016. Before I had a dual position being manager of the commercial back office and being officer of the HR Department together with the executive secretary. I have been working here for over 17 years now.

It is important for me that my job and work environment are never boring, luckily I have never experienced any boring day since the start of my career. iPS has a very encouraging attitude, so I always know I am at the right address for further self-development.

Seventeen years ago a friend of mine was working here. She told me that they needed a secretary and insisted on me applying for this position. I decided to give it a chance and applied for the job. I had my job interview with the director on a Saturday, immediately I felt the connection. Our new HQ-office is already the 4th office of iPS that I am working for.

HR DEPARTMENT

41

The Commercial Back Office Department, located at our headquarters, supports all our commercial departments and makes sure they can work fluently. We talked about it with Margareth UitdeHaag-Bol.

“I am one of the two senior assistants of the commercial back office since May 2016. Although the commercial back office is still one department, it is now divided into two teams. My colleague Sarina is Senior of CBO-Contracts and I am Senior of CBO-General. It has been five years already since I started working for iPS.

BACK OFFICE DEPARTMENT

QHSE DEPARTMENT

The commercial back office offers secretarial and administrative support for the commercial and financial departments. Among other things, we arrange training courses, medical certificates, flights and visa. We also apply for seaman’s book and Coc’s. Besides making iPS CV’s we are responsible for the contracts for resources and order confirmations to clients.

I experience my job as challenging and it comes with a lot of variation. Most days I am planning ahead to do certain tasks, but arriving at the office, I often discover that the day has other plans for me. It is very challenging when sudden tasks need full our attention to be finished the same day also because

they differ greatly from the daily tasks we have. It can be quiet at times, but then again, when something happens or we get an important e-mail from a client or candidate, we fully focus on the upcoming case. We are not able to plan ahead, but that is one of the factors I like the most!

To be appreciated by our clients, candidates or just colleagues is something I really like about my job. Especially candidates appreciate us because they experience that they are not just numbers for us. Of course, it isn’t only the appreciation, I also feel at home. It is nice to work here and honestly I feel like a fish in water, because I can be myself, which is completely accepted by everyone.”

Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (in short: QHSE) are important aspects, not only for iPS, but also for our clients. Therefore we strive for the highest standards regarding these subjects and show this with certifications for VCU, ISO:9001:2008, OHSAS 18001:2007 and MLC:2006. We sat down with iPS’ new QHSE Officer Jeffrey Nouwen.

“QHSE is of global importance to us. Following last year’s renewal of the OHSAS 18001:2007 certificate at our headquarters in Capelle aan den IJssel, our offices in The Hague, Dubai and the UK also obtained this certificate. Next to the continuing focus on improving the quality of the iPS’ management system, 2017 will be the year to achieve the information security standard 27001:2013.

The QHSE Department of iPS continually focuses on improving the processes within the company as well as improving our clients’ satisfaction rate. An example of this continuous strive for improvement is the implementation of the OHSAS workflow. This digital instrument will make sure that all risks per project are investigated for all candidates before they start working. This system largely contributes to reaching our targets for operational excellence within the internal processes.

Another project to excel in operational excellence is the digitalization of the complaint and accident forms. This improvement will make sure the procedure of filing a complaint or accident will be easier and faster for the consultants and will create less paperwork.

Since the candidates play an important role in our business, they are perfect ambassadors to broadcast iPS values. Keeping that in mind, it is important to know everything about their satisfaction level towards us. The results offer us indications of the strengths and weaknesses of iPS in the eyes of the candidates and of which aspects of the services delivered by iPS are the most important for them. This provides us with important insights for our mission of continuous evaluation and improvement of the iPS management system.

We strive for an overall satisfaction level of 100% for both the clients and the candidates. In this way, the QHSE Department hopes to contribute to the Quality, Health, Safety and Environment of iPS!”

PROTECTING PRIVACY IN THE DIGITAL ERA

PROCESSING PERSONAL DATA, AS SAFE AS

POSSIBLE BECOMES INCREASINGLY MORE

IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE IDENTITY

THEFT, DATA LEAKS AND THE LOSS OF DATA OVER

THE INTERNET CAN HAVE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES

FOR OUR EMPLOYEES, CLIENTS AND OUR COMPANY.

The rules and regulations, both on a European and a national level, have been tightened and stricter provisions have been brought in to protect the privacy of individuals and to force organisations to take responsibility for the safeguarding thereof.

On 1 January, 2016 the Dutch ‘Wet meldplicht datalekken’ (Law Covering the Obligation to Report Data Loss / Leaks) came into force on a national

level, as an addendum to the ‘Wet bescherming persoonsgegevens’ (Law for the Protection of Personal Data). The new legislation contains the obligation for our organisation to take technical and organisational measures to prevent data leaks and unlawful processing of personal data.

Protecting privacy with regard to the processing of personal data also plays an important role on a European level. On 24 May, 2016 the General Data Protection Regulation came into force, which contains the obligation for all organisations within the European Economic Area to ensure that adequate privacy measures are put in place before 25 May, 2018. As an international company that recruits individuals to work worldwide we process large amounts of employees’ personal data. In order to comply with current and future legislation iPS decided mid-2016 to set up a ‘Privacy Team’.

COMPOSITION OF THE PRIVACY TEAMOur Privacy Team consists of four staff members with different expertise: Legal, HR, ICT and QHSE. Our Privacy Team also has a Privacy Officer, having a legal background. The main goal of this Privacy Officer is to safeguard the protection of personal data in order to develop, implement and guard the organisation’s compliance with the regulations. The Privacy Officer also acts as first point of contact for all the privacy issues within our organisation.

WHAT DOES THE PRIVACY TEAM DO FOR iPS?We created the Privacy Team in order to act in accordance with national regulations, as well as to anticipate stipulations of the General Data Protection Regulation. The Privacy Team has developed a Code of Conduct to govern the way we process personal data and is responsible for the monitoring thereof. Because of these new regulations, we have also adjusted our website with a Privacy Statement, Cookie Statement and Disclaimer.

In addition, we have adjusted our ICT Regulations for staff employees with regard to the expected care in processing personal data. Last, but not least we are in the process of obtaining the ISO 27001 certification. ISO 27001 is an international standard published by the International Standardization Organization (ISO), which describes how to manage information security in a company.

NUMBER OF BREACH INCIDENTS BY TYPE OVER TIME

WHO DOES THE PRIVACY TEAM WORK FOR?The Privacy Team does not only works for our project personnel, but also for our staff employees. The team does everything it can to ensure the privacy and the security of all (personal) data from both within and outside the organisation. Since our company works closely with third parties, Data Processing Agreements were drawn up to ensure that our level of privacy protection is safeguarded, even in the hands of others. These agreements demonstrate to our employees and clients just how seriously we take the business of handling their privacy.

BLUE PETER HARDZEILDAGEN

The Taplow Traffic Charity Trust is a charity organization that takes care of children who have either lost a family member or experienced a family member being seriously injured through road accidents. By taking them on a short family break to Disneyland Paris, the organization strives to help them rebuild their lives and spend some quality time together.

iPS proudly sponsored Van Oord’s team during the Tour of Life. The overall yield for the Tour for Life 2016 was well over € 855,200. Money which benefits the Daniel den Hoed Foundation and which is intended for groundbreaking research into customised cancer treatment by the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute.

Tour for Life is the most beautiful multiple stage course. This eight-day bicycle event took place from 28th August to 4th September and took its participants from Bardonecchia (Italy) to Rotterdam (the Netherlands) across the French Alps, Vosges and the Ardennes. A ride of almost 1,400 kilometers and a total of 15,000 altimeters. Famous cols such as Col du Galibier, Col de la Croix de Fer and Grand Ballon had to be conquered. A huge effort that still can’t be compared to the effort of tens of thousands of people in the Netherlands, and innumerable all over the world that fight cancer.

We were proud to be one of the sponsors of the ‘Blue Peter Hardzeildagen’, a fast sailing event which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year.

The mission of this unique sailing event: to increase the awareness of traditional seafaring, where sustainability, safety and quality are highly regarded. The strength of the event lies within the experience of the skippers, who are, due to years of sailing experience, masters in their profession. All takes place in conjunction with the sporting element and regional relationships. Members, sponsors, organizations and other interested parties (from the sailing and marine industry) meet in an informal atmosphere.

TOUR OF LIFE

LONDON TO AMSTERDAM BIKE RIDE

On 14th February 2016, a fundraising event was started in memory of Andrew Dickinson (ex-CRL Utility Site Manager) who lost his life in a road traffic accident earlier in 2016. The fund-raising represented a celebration of his life; he was remembered as a genuine, happy, professional and great guy.

The Crossrail and BFK teams joined up once again for the challenge and, this time, cycled from 24th to 26th June 2016 from Farringdon to The Dam in Amsterdam. While the initial target was £7,000, it managed to raise over £9,000, 133% of this target!

EDITORS’ NOTE

COLOPHON

You have now reached the last page of this iPS magazine. Along with the changed style in writing, this magazine has a special significance: giving you insights of our people and our work.

“I wake up wanting to work”, someone mentioned. What about the rest?

“Would you like to tell us your story?”, we asked our people. We tried to go beyond and below the surface of the business world. What is their drive, their motivation? How and why are decisions made?

We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this new publication ofiPS – Powerful People.

“I WAKE UP WANTING TO WORK”The objective of this issue was to publish up-to-date and original stories alongside relevant and insightful interviews. As such, this issue aspires to show integrity, be vibrant, engaging and accessible.

You have read about the projects that we have been involved in as well as interviews with people who are getting the dirty, yet amazing work done every single day. We have faith in the greatest gift our industries can give: development and innovation. And, above all, our people.

Needless to say, any insights or advertising that you wish to submit, either individually or collaboratively, will be much appreciated and will make a substantial contribution to the early development and success of our next magazine. We are grateful for your readership.

Last but not least, if you have not already done so, please do not forget to follow us on social media. Here you will find behind-the-scenes posts, updates and not to forget: our latest vacancies. Let us engage.
