ACTIVITIES
Side-effect trials on bumblebees (several species – subspecies)
Side-effect trials on beneficial organisms
• Microbials
• Predators
• Parasitoids
• Nematodes
Efficacy trials (mainly microbials, botanicals, ….)
Problem solving :
• New pests e.g. Aculops, Tuta
• Rearing insects/mites

CASE STUDY: IMIDACLOPRID AND
POLLINATORS
- Working group pollinators and pesticides NL
- 80’s-early 2000: several cases of toxicity of organophosphates, carbamates, etc. every
year to honey bees
- Since 2005: hardly a case of mortality of honeybees due to the use of pesticides despite
huge use of neonicotinoids
- Stop the group?
- 1 case in 2012: 1 illegal use of a non-neonicotinoid
- Australia : no abnormal mortality but no varroa mite
- Science article on bumblebees (Felix Wackers)
- Good experimental science
- Realistic dose rate: improvement
- But: far too long exposure with this dose rate: completely unrealistic!!!!!
- Typical ivory tower work from university scientists
- Conclusions to bumblebees in environment: not correct
- OPERA project: bee health in Europe - Fact and figures 2013
- No strong evidence that lethal or sublethal effects play a role in bee colony mortality
