Berkeley companies included in Science Coalition Sparking Economic Growth 20 Reportcompanies created from federally funded university researchSparking Economic Growth 20 highlights 100 companies thattrace their roots to federally funded university research andtheir role in bringing transformational innovations to marketcreating new jobs and contributing to economicgrowth Sequestration which began in March 2013 is set torun through 2021 and will wring an additional $95 billion fromfederal RampD budgets over this period This nationaldisinvestment in science will have real consequences Amyris was listed on the report along with Cadence Design Systems and Sun Microsystems fromBerkeley Similarly Amyris is a lab idea that received a relatively small amount of funding ($500K)from the National Science Foundation and Department of Defense which ultimately grew into a startupbased on Berkeley-owned IP Since its founding in 2003 Amyris went public in 2010 achieved $74MMrevenue in 2012 created a low-cost malaria treatment for low- and middle-income countries withfunding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and is now selling biofuels
IPIRA filed patents on the basic method and through a series of contracts (and sub-contracts) ensuredthat the final artemisinin-based malaria treatments would be available at a low cost to those in 88economically disadvantaged countries The ldquohumanitarian userdquo clauses in the contracts along with theassociated IP management strategies and business models was recognized through a ldquoPatents forHumanityrdquo award from the US Patent and Trademark Office in 2013 See all 100 Companies (1030)
