Welcome!

Prepare for class: students need to have the following iphone skills: adjusting settings (under “Settings”), allowing permissions, switching apps, downloading apps, and knowing how to use the screen interface, i.e. the difference between a tap and a long tap, swiping, and where controls are located. If you need a review or help with these things, go to the iPhone User Guide or open the Tips app and go throught the Welcome to iPhone, Essentials, and Photography modules.

★ When you come to class, please sign in on your computer or iPad, so that you can use your phone during class.

★ Download the Camera+ and Genius Scan apps ahead of class ★ Have a painting or two handy to photograph

This app has a lot of features, but I use it exclusively to take out-of-focus photos because iphone does not yet have a manual focus control.

DAY TWO PHOTOGRAPHING ARTWORK …for online use and entering shows; not for museum-quality archival photos.

1. Light the painting. Not too cool, not too warm.

2. If you see any glare, move the camera to position the artwork in the frame so it is slightly skewed. Usually auto exposure is fine, but compare the color onscreen to your painting to be sure

3. Then take the photo. If the color looks good and there’s no glare, then all we need to do is unskew and crop.

Genius Scan is an app designed for photographing/scanning documents, enhancing text docs to high contrast, and saving as PDFs—in other words, for digitizing paper documents. The feature we use is the crop tool, which has the ability to “square up” skewed or distorted images.

- Settings>About (check version) - Settings>General>Default filter: select “none” - Settings>General>Page dimension: select “fit” - Settings>General>Password encryption off - Settings>General>Smart Document Names (turn on to customize titles) - Settings>Export (here you can add shortcuts to export destinations) - Settings>Text recognition (off) You can export files in PDF or JPG format. The last export format saves. You can make multi-page documents. You can shoot in Genius Scan, or import from your camera roll. Use the edit (magic wand-looking thingy) tool, click “recrop” and drag the

corners to fit your painting. (I crop to the rabbet overlap to avoid messy edges.)

Export to your camera roll, or to a folder on your computer, or wherever you want to save your paintings. Files are also saved in the app.

NOTE: If you want to post only low-res images, an easy way to downsize is by turning your phone sideways so the image occupies only part of the screen, then taking a screen shot and cropping.
