1. TEKS : 117.32 1B, 1C & 2a Objective:

Awareness of abstract non-objective art Found composition (using map) shows awareness of

elements of principles Work in relief – mixed media – create layers

2. Big Understandings

Critique non-objective art Discuss possible influences How do artists get ideas?

3. Assessment Evidence: TSW create an abstract non-objective art work by using maps as a guide. TSW use finders to look for a composition of lines in the maps. When they have found a composition tsw use tracing paper to make a composition of the roads for lines, and areas of cities to be shapes.

4. Opening Hook: Introduce students to abstract art by showing a 7 minute video on YouTube called “What is Abstract Art?” by Frank Curkovic

5. Instructional Strategies/Student Activities: 1. create finders to look for a composition of lines in a map 2. Enlarge the idea, on newsprint, to the size of the format they will be using 3. transfer the newsprint idea onto a matt board 4. Coil up paper towels and lay them in the areas for the roads, dip in white glue to adhere to the canvases. Use cardboard to build up other areas. 5. Cover the entire board with sheets of toilet paper brushed with white glue 6. Let dry. 7 Paint with acrylic paint using a color scheme, neutrals, but make it very bright, more than you want. 9. Antique with oil paint black and a small amount of Van Dyke Brown. To antique you must paint oil paint over the entire area and and then wipe off with a rag so that the texture is still there from the toilet paper and leave lover areas dark 10. When dry spray with crystal clear spray to bring out color and give a shine 6. Materials/Resources: What is Art? (YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kdzGAjG26s) Newsprint Pencils Maps Matt Board White Glue Acrylic Paint Brushes Oil Paint (black & Van Dyke Brown) Rags Crystal Clear Acrylic Spray Paint 7. Grouping Patterns: Heterogeneous groups

8. Ending, Summary/Reflection TSW be encouraged to talk about their work. They will discuss their thoughts behind creating their abstract composition and how they chose the line they used. TSW speculate on inspiration.
