Nolasco, Kathy 4pol1 The North - South Divide In the movie, multi-national pharmaceutical companies mostly based in wealthy northern countries are conducting experiments with the poorer Kenyans of the Global South. This kind of exploitation was made possible because of the technological gap existing between the entities. Because of their lack of medical skill and technical know-how, the Kenyans were unaware of the gruesome plans that the pharmaceutical companies have in store for them. International Development The movie depicted several scenes in Africa which showed images of urban slums and timeless poverty. There were no institutions of civil society and it showed a weak and detached government. In this concept of international political economy, poverty must be lessened and institutions play a significant role in the development. Free Trade Policies The movie depicted free trade policies in Africa. Foreign pharmaceutical company was able to conduct drug trials to African community without providing them protections which killed many of the African subjects. The only thing they are concerned of is the profit they will gain without the respect for human rights and public health. Policies must be designed to create strong communities, opportunity and fairness, shared prosperity and investment in the future and must focused on domestic investment and respect for human rights and public health among others.
