TGICA Objectives

TGICA: Task Group on Data and Scenario Support for Impact and Climate Analysis

Mandate The mandate of the TGICA is to facilitate wide availability of

climate change related data and scenarios to enable research and sharing of information across the three IPCC working groups.

Activities  Coordinates the Data Distribution Centre (DDC), which

provides data sets, climate and other scenarios, and other materials.

Identifies information needs in support of IPCC work, facilitates research on climate impacts, adaptation, and mitigation, and makes related recommendations on cross-cutting issues.

Contributes to building capacity in the use of data and scenarios for climate-related research in developing and transition-economy regions and countries.

Convenes expert meetings as needed.

IPCC Data Distribution Centre

IPCC DDC (Data Distribution Centre) The IPCC Data Distribution Centre (DDC) was established

in 1998, following a recommendation by the IPCC Task Group on Data and Scenario Support for Impact and Climate Analysis (TGICA), to facilitate the timely distribution of a consistent set of up-to-date scenarios of changes in climate and related environmental and socio-economic factors for use in climate impact and adaptation assessment.

The DDC is a shared operation of the British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC) in the United Kingdom; the World Data Center Climate at the Max-Planck-Institute for Meteorology (WDCC / MPI-M) in Hamburg, Germany; and the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) operated by the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) at Columbia University, New York, USA. Each of these institutions has voluntarily taken on responsibility for managing access to a subset of the data and information provided by the DDC.

WG II + III Data and Information Requirements

DDC user requests for SAR, TAR and AR4:

Reduced data sizeRegional subsetsTemporal subsets

‘simple’ data formats (e.g. ASCII, EXCEL) Data dissemination on media (CD, DVD, hard disc) Data visualization Advice on data applicability and data usage Availability of data processing tools

WG II + III Data and Information Requirements

Data usage in WG II+III environment: Application of model data for solving questions on

mitigation of and adaptation to climate changes and for vulnerability studies

Applications fields of adaptation: tourism, agriculture, forestry, transportation, insurance, architecture, alternative energies…..

Climate model data are used as information in addition to observations.

Interdisciplinary data access for which we cannot assume extensive experience about model data production, data structures and data formats

Forcing data for regional / local models and for process models

WG II + III Data and Information Requirements

Three areas of requirements Requirements for model data:

Data products are expected and not model raw data Complete daily / sub-daily time series of individual variables,

climate indices, climate extremes Requirements for metadata (browse + use):

Searchable data repository including information to decide on the usefulness of the data entity (e.g. scenario, model, variable, etc.)

Complete information to allow for data processing and use the model data (e.g. grid, variable, unit, time)

Requirements for services: Instructions how to use the data Data processing options for aggregation and extraction in

time and space and for visualization Specific user support (FAQs and emails requests)

TGICA Requested Variables for AR5

TGICA agreed on its meeting TGICA-14, 26 – 28 February 2008 in Trinidad on a list of model variables for AR5 to be archived in and disseminated by the IPCC DDC as the IPCC reference data archive

TGICA-14 DOC14: Proposed Request to the Standard Variables List for the Next Coordinated Climate Model Experiments List has been adopted from PCMDI’s request list for

CMIP3/4 for the atmosphere and the ocean And completed by variables for geochemistry etc. URL in GCM data section of the DDC:

Possible IPCC AR5 Data Management Concept

Database for IPCC AR5 will be produced within CMIP5 Range of estimates for amount of data in CMIP5/AR5

data archive: Minimum: less than 1 PB (experience with AR4) Maximum: app. 3 PB (= 100 TB/model * 30 models)

(TGICA-DOC14, 1 degr. Model resolution, 5300 model years centennial + 1400 model years decadal result in 100 TB/model)

Two different layers of data management are involved: Production within CMIP5 as scientific research data

archive Long-term archiving within IPCC Reference Data

Archive which is presently the IPCC DDC (WDCC + BADC for GCM data)
