Dear 2019-2020 Grade 1 Families, Moving up to Grade 1 can be an exciting change for both students and their families. At NIS, one of the major changes for Grade 1 students is that they are part of the parent-owned, one-to-one (1:1) iPad program. We understand that the purchase and ownership of such a device can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming for some. This letter will hopefully help our families through the preparations and help have a successful start to your Grade 1 student using their iPad at school and at home. Below is an outline of the procedures for how iPads will be set up and rolled out, as well as what support will come from us and what support will come from families. (Please note if you have an older child who was in Grade 1 in the past, this process will be different than in previous years.) iPad Set Up and Roll Out for Grade 1 Students 2019-2020 Before school year begins Parents will purchase iPads for their children. iPads can be new, used, or refurbished as long as they meet the minimum iPad requirements (outlined at the bottom of this document). *Note: iPads will be wiped/reset by the IT department to get them ready for school. This means if your child will be using an iPad that has photos or anything else you would like to save, you need to back them up before the iPad comes to school. Monday, August 26th Students will bring their iPads back to their homeroom teachers.

Between August 26th and September 20th

iPads will be kept in school and will not go home on the weekends until students complete a Digital Citizenship Passport as they learn how to use their iPads safely, respectfully and in a way that is helpful to their learning. As a parent, if you would like to help and learn more about how children can use iPads and digital technology in better ways at home, we recommend using commonsensemedia.com or childnet.com as a valuable resource.

Friday, September 20th

Students will bring home the Family Technology Agreement. This agreement is a document that will support students and their parents in discussing and making decisions about how iPads can be used at home. Students will also bring home the Digital Citizenship Passport they have been working on at school to help guide the conversation.

Monday, September 23rd

Students will return their Family Technology Agreement to their homeroom teacher. This needs to be completed before students may take their iPads home on the weekends.

From Friday, September 27th to the

end of the school year

Students may take their iPads home on the weekend if their parents agree. Teachers will continue conversations with students about being respectful, safe and helpful with the iPads. Parents are encouraged to do the same at home.
