Improvised Water Filter

WATER IS VERY ESSENTIAL IN OUR

LIVES. IT HAS MANY USES, FROM

DRINKING AND CLEANING ,TO

IRRIGATING CROPS AND

LANDSCAPES.

In one way or another, water is a part of almost everything humans make and do.

Page 3: Ip (improvised water filter)

Nowadays, water supply has been one of the biggest problems in our country is facing. We are

sure that some of you already experienced having or using dirty water coming out from our faucets or showers. And this is because a lot of

our water resources are not that clean anymore. That is why; the government finds it difficult to provide clean water all over the country. If this

will not be avoided, our safety will most likely be at stake because there will be no assurance that

the water we are using is clean and safe. And so, it is essential to learn how to filter water on your own as the commercial water filtration

systems could be very expensive and can cost up to thousands of pesos.

Page 4: Ip (improvised water filter)

Since, all of us in our group are very environmental conscious, we chose to make something that will not just help our community but the world as a whole to have better environment. For our investigatory project, our group decided to create an Improvised Water Filter. This water filter is not just a simple one but this is something worth using. This Improvised Water Filter is a great help for us because this will give us the assurance that the water we are be using is cleaner than ever before and a money saver.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

Since, we are making Improvised Water Filter for our investigatory

project; our main agenda is to prove that improvised water filter can be a way for us to have a clearer water. We also want to prove that there is an easy process to filter water in a

less expensive and more environmental way. And also to

prove that improvised water filter is very effective.

The Improvised Water Filter we made answered a lot of questions and solved a lot of problems. This

answered the problem of dirty water supply and difficulties of

using commercialized water filter. This also solved our problem when it comes to expensive water filters

since the materials used in this project are very affordable.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

Improvised Water Filter, indeed, plays an important role in society. It benefits all persons from different places especially those who are not always having clean water supply. It helps all persons to have a

cleaner water to to use. It will also benefit those who are depriving themselves of spending too much in commercialized water filters, as well benefit those

people who are environmental friendly. Improvised water filter will benefit them in a way that all their wants and needs will be provided, and satisfy them when it comes to what they most likely wanted

to happen.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY: Our investigatory project covers the process of how improvised

water filter can really make dirty water a clean one. It also covers the aspect of how can materials from nature be an effective source for us to make an efficient water filter. We made and studied about this improvised water filter for almost one month. And this really proved a lot of things and answered many questions in our minds.

According to our study, improvised water filter is effective. And according to other researchers, this kind of water filter is really capable of doing its job. It is effectual; however, there is a possibility but only a minimal chance that the process of filtering the water will be difficult since, unlike, other commercialized water filter, an improvised one is only made of sand, pebbles, carbon, etc. But since, water filter is a cycle, the continuous filtration will certainly make a dirty water clean.

Based on our one-month study, we can say that making this improvised water filter is not that difficult. The only limitation is that the number of cycle that the water needs to be filtered depend on the quantity and quality of the water, the darker and larger amount of the water, means more cycle.

Definition of Terms

• Activated carbon- is a form of carbon that has been

processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a

very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical

reactions.• adsorbent- material which can adsorb a chemical or

contaminant out of solution.

• aesthetic- meaning pleasing to the senses; in this case not a

regulated or enforced guide in water treatment.

• carcinogenic- cancer causing substance or material

• disinfection-by-product- chemicals formed by the reaction

of organics to chlorine or other disinfectants

• organics- chemical compounds containing carbon

In making a water filter, you will need the following:

Activated Carbon Pebbles

Jumbo cotton balls

Water Pump with tubing

1. Place the top half of the bottle upside down, creating a funnel through the drinking spout.

2. Insert mouth of the bottle to the hole of theplywood, this will serve as the base of the filter.

Page 13: Ip (improvised water filter)

3. Place jumbo cotton into the drinking

spout of the bottle and then pour a layer of sand over the cotton, cap

off.

4. Next, pour the layer of activated carbon just above the sand and

lastly pour the layer of small rocks.

5. Cover top of the container, but leave a small hole at the center for the tubing.

6. Attach water pump to yourselected container/ small aquarium

and the tubing to the water filter.

Page 17: Ip (improvised water filter)

7. Pour the dirty water through the filter and turn onyour water pump. You’ll notice that, as the water repeats the filtration cycle, clearer water will be

produced.

Description of water

The water is still dark but the materials floating to it was removed

The water is still dark but some dirt is removed.

The water is much lighter than before.

The water is clear but you can still see some particles.

The water is clearer .

The water is clearer than ever.

Page 19: Ip (improvised water filter)

As you can see from the table, the data implies that the previously dirty water becomes remarkably clean as the process of filtration repeats. Unwanted materials and particles had been removed and water now is clearer than before.

Testing

Page 21: Ip (improvised water filter)

SUMMARYFor our Investigatory Project which is the Improvised Water Filter,

we underwent several tests and repetition of the whole filtering process in order for us to achieve our goal which is to prove that improvised water filter is really capable of filtration.

We made use of sand, pebbles, activated carbon and water pump and placed them in an aquarium in order to filter the dirty water. The aquarium is where the water to be filtered is contained, the water pump pumps that water into the water filter and that water filter returns the filtered water back into the aquarium. As the water repeats the filtration cycle, clearer and cleaner water will be produced. This is a very helpful IP for the organics (the stuff that the activated carbon adsorbs) often react with other substances in the water that form disinfection-by-products that are often carcinogenic.

And on the tests we did, it showed us that several cycle of filtration is needed to be able to have the cleaner water. Since, on the first cycle, the water was still dirty, eventually, the water got clearer at the 9th -15th cycle.

So, at the end of our study, we proved that our product is indeed efficient in filtering water.

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of our experimentation, we therefore conclude that Improvised Water Filter is really effective. We also conclude that the materials we used such as the carbon, sand, pebbles, etc. are definitely useful for water filtration. Though, it may take up several cycles before having a clearer water, in the end, you’ll be satisfied of the work of the improvised water filter. We can also say that improvised water filter is really a creditable thing to own. Not just it is easy to make but what matters most is the commendable performance of this kind of water filter. Lastly, we conclude that improvised water filter is not just useful and economical, it is environmental friendly.

RECOMMENDATION

We have observed that this investigatory project is highly commendable. We have proved that the filtration process undergone by the previously dirty water becomes remarkably clean as the repeated process of filtration repeats. This investigatory project can help in the parsimonious act we need to do with regards the usage of water. This is eco-friendly since it does not release any toxins in the environment. We believe that the application of this project in every home shall contribute to the betterment of our society. Just like the way natural aquifers act, the homemade filter strains every harmful substance in the water. It removes all the bad effects of taking in dirty water. We also recommend larger volume of the elements that are needed to filter the water so that the variables would undergo a more complex approach of filtration.
