IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCH PARK ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORE FACILITY
1805 COLLABORATION PLACEAMES, IOWA
Owner – Iowa State University Research ParkArchitect – RDG Planning and Design
Design Architect – Matt NiebuhrProject Lighting Designer – Renee Thomas, AIA, LCGeneral Contractor – Story Construction Company
The Iowa State University Research Park – Economic Core Development Facility’s daylighting and glare control strategy is based on the use of the LightLouver Daylighting Design System to both harvest useful natural daylight and control the introduction of low-angle glare on the south elevation of the building. Employing high efficiency LED lighting the entire building is well illuminated and the total connected lighting load does not exceed .6 watt/sq. ft. absent the energy offsets that are achievable by employing daylight harvesting.
The fritted exterior glazing system incorporates a continuous clerestory glazing band sized 3’ tall with a sill height of 8’-6” A.F.F and a head height of 11’-6” and is located on both the South and North Elevations of the building. Daylight Utilization in the regularly occupied areas of the East and West Wings of the building as well as the Common Conference Spaces on both floors approaches 90% of the building’s total usable square footage. Ceiling mounted photocells are located to sample available daylight incident in the defined interior daylighting zones and adjusts the artificial lighting levels within each of these areas accordingly to maintain a consistent and uniform level of interior illumination throughout the open-office layout of the building.
