From The President Barbara Lane Hug Newton, Iowa May 19, 2009

Greetings from Central Iowa:

As just a reminder, the purpose the newsletter is to communicate about the business of the society. Genealogical information is reserved for the Hawkeye Heritage.

We live in a fast-changing world and IGS must change to keep up. The Board of Directors and your officers are working hard to try and keep our traditional values while at the same time dealing with today’s issues.

I’ve explained some of these changes under separate headings. Please contact any board member if you have questions.

Your President,

Barbara Lane Hug [email protected]

Hawkeye Heritage Transition Twenty and thirty years ago genealogists subscribed to as many genealogy magazines as possible. Do you remember getting a magazine in the mail, stopping all other work, sitting down and going through the surname indexes to see if you could find your ancestors? And remember the correspondence with the SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope); we hoped and prayed the person would respond.

Nearly all of these magazines have gone by the wayside, a fond remembrance of former times.

The Hawkeye Heritage has been the research publication for IGS for a long time. Its purpose is to give members information to assist them in their genealogical research, which includes articles, queries and data bases.

The cost of printing and mailing is prohibitive for the Society.

The Board of Directors has struggled with how to keep the Hawkeye Heritage a member benefit without raising dues; personal donations have paid for the last two issues.

In the last newsletter members were asked to let us know how they want to receive the Hawkeye Heritage – mail, on the web, pick up or not at all. Unfortunately only a few people responded to the request.

Last month the Board of Directors had to make a difficult decision about the continuation of the Hawkeye Heritage. They decided the publication is still a viable way to communicate information.

The Board of Directors decided to make the Hawkeye Heritage available only electronically on the IGS website with the next issue being available June 1st.

The Board understands this is not a popular decision, but they felt there was no other choice. They are aware that a public Internet connection is available in nearly every community through the library or school and hope that members are able to print the publication directly from our web site or save to a disk for home use.

Volunteers Needed

Scanning Project To prepare for our web site, the Board wants to begin transcribing and scanning some of our non-copyrighted resources. The first item discussed was all of the past issues of the Hawkeye Heritage.

Here’s how you can help.

• Volunteer to coordinate the process. • Scanning past issues at home and sending us the file. • Coming to IGS and scanning the publication.

Contact Barbara Hug, [email protected] if you want to volunteer.

Historic Cemetery Walk IGS will cooperate with Woodland Cemetery to conduct a Historic Cemetery Walk on Sunday, October 4th. We are looking for volunteers to serve as actors and guides. Please contact Co-chairs, LaWanda Nepstad, (515) 252-0283, [email protected] or Kaye Sanchez, (515) 276-5396, [email protected]. This will be a very fun event.

Annual Conference Annual conference this year will be held October 9 and 10th in West Des Moines, Iowa. Volunteers are needed to assist with the Annual Conference as follows:

• Silent Auction coordinator • Silent Auction items • Registration table • Set up and Clean up Contact Kathy Gourley at <[email protected]> or Ricki King at <[email protected]> or IGS at 515-276-0287 to volunteer.

for donations! That’s because about half of our yearly operating budget is made up of donations and fund raising events.

Webster: History of Early Ft. Dodge & Webster County

Some of the states and their counties included in our newest books: Delaware: New Castle Illinois: Perry Yes, we have finally paid off all of our leases. Minnesota: Micollet Ohio: Guernsey, Muskingum, Tuscarawas, In 2003 we were paying $6,600 per month on the

mortgage and $2,594 on leases. Pennsylvania: Franklin, Lawrence Virginia: Essex, Greenbrier, Northampton, Northumberland + more Today we are spending $4,589 on the mortgage and $0

on leases. That’s a whopping savings of $4,605 a month or $55,260 a year! Some family history surnames: Boswell, Briscoe,

Corwin, Dodson, Griese, Leverich, Liebenstein Reynolds, Travis, Tripp Congratulations.

However , . . . Don’t forget the upcoming book sale on June 13 and June 20 for Iowa Genealogical Society members only! It’s going to be something big! Look for more information elsewhere in this newsletter.

We still need donations. Summer is the leanest time of the year for income and yet our bills still need to be paid. So if you can spare a few

dollars, it would really help us meet our summer expenses.

Remember to check the “Recent Library Book Acquisitions” binder on top of the card catalog files when you’re at IGS. A listing of our new books is printed at the beginning of each month. In fact, this month (June) we are in real need of

donations to keep IGS operating as strong as we have in the past.

IGS will appreciate any donations you can make. Thanks.
