NEW: Attire to InspireA clothing drive has been added to an-

nual meeting day. Bring your gently used professional or business casual attire on May 10 and help the LEAP Task Force sup-port AIB College of Business students as they prepare for a future in the workforce.

(FYI: LEAP stands for Leaders Emerging in the Accounting Profession.) Students from AIB “shop” the Bill Reichardt Clothes Closet, located on the AIB campus, for items they need to look their best.

The clothing dona-tion program stresses the importance of having a professional appearance when interviewing and working in the business community.

Clothing donations are not limited to just suits and sport coats. Other items include: ties, belts, scarves, shoes, hosiery, briefcases, and jewelry. As a thank you for

donating, your name will be entered for a chance to win an iPad or $50 Visa gift card! The winners will be announced before the annual meeting ends.

We all have clothing that could help a new college graduate get “suited” for suc-cess. Start weeding out your closets soon.

NOTE: the canned food drive has been moved to the fall. Details will be pub-lished in late summer.

Put May 10 on Your Calendar, Commit to Being There

All members are strongly encouraged to attend this once-a-year opportunity to revel in your association with fellow members and welcome new CPAs into the fold. An invitation and a lunch registra-tion form will be distributed in mid-April. Reservations are requested by May 3. v

A world without financial illiteracy

CPAs are on a mission in life. They know that if people are taught certain skills

(e.g., budgeting) and values (e.g., spending less than you earn), they will make smarter financial decisions. If people learn these skills and values when they are young, they have a better chance of successfully controlling their finances. Several years ago, the Society established a Financial Literacy Task Force to offer members a venue to contribute to this educational process. Chair Patrick Meyer comments on the cur-rent committee.

Q. How would you describe the makeup of Financial Literacy Committee members?

Most CPAs have en-countered someone with financial literacy issues. It is quite obvious, consider-

ing the ongoing economic issues of our

country, that a majority of people do not have the understanding that they need when it comes to their finances. Our committee typically has CPAs who have seen friends and family make significant financial decisions without understanding the repercussions.

Q. What activities does the committee offer?

One of the most rewarding activities our committee offers is the Money Mammals program. This program involves a video that teaches kindergarten age kids the basics about money through puppets and songs. Last year I received a packet of hand-made “thank you” cards from the students of one of the classes I presented to.

Another project in the works is a presentation for high school students to help them avoid poor financial decisions as they enter college. The program in-cludes a video of recent college students

candidly discussing money mistakes they made in college.

Q. What is your story on becoming involved with the committee?

This is the first committee I’ve served on. I selected it because I believe that I could have personally benefited from more financial literacy education when I was younger. I feel like it was a subject that was avoided and the expectation was that we would just acquire the knowledge at some other point in life, which I did. But, for many people that never happens.

This is an area CPAs are highly qualified to improve on. As the United States head-ed into the 21st century, there has been an increasing focus on financial literacy. For example, April is now heralded as Financial Literacy Month with myriad programs, awareness efforts, and support-ing education to help improve people’s financial decision making skills. The state of Iowa even added Financial Literacy to the Core Curriculum requirements of high schools last year. v

Thank You, Committee Volunteers!

Advancing the professional success of our members

Nowhere is the ISCPA mission statement more central than in the activities of

the Membership & Member Benefits Com-mittee. The CPA exam and subsequent designation provide common ground for members. Yet, the multitude of industries employing CPAs fragments the profes-sion. And, even public accounting is not as homogeneous as it once was. Founded nearly 100 years ago, today’s Iowa Society of CPAs succeeds because members share values and appreciate the richness of opportunity a diversified profession offers. Membership & Member Benefits Com-mittee chair Kristin George responds to interview questions below.

Q: How would you characterize the makeup of Membership & Member Benefits Committee mem-bers?

I have been a part of the committee for six years now and it has always been

a good mix of new and more experi-enced CPAs. It’s great to also have a mix of industries, because the committee tries to cater to all members. In addition, we have to figure out how to get new CPAs to become members and spark their interest in becoming involved, as well as work on retaining current members.

Q: How would you describe the types of activities the committee offers?

Our committee organizes several events throughout the year to meet other members and learn more about the Society. Last September, we held a networking event for young CPAs (both new members and non-members who recently passed the CPA exam) at Blue Moon Piano Bar. It was fun! Guests mixed and mingled with members involved on committees or on the board. The event al-lowed them to find out more about ISCPA and also discuss career paths with current members. There were also some pretty great door prizes given away throughout the evening, which was an added bonus!

For several years, the committee has been trying to improve the Society’s out-reach across the state. One way has been to host a mixer after the tax update in Cedar Rapids in late November. We plan to reach out to more members and are considering opportunities to host events in other areas of the state.

On May 10, 2013, at the ISCPA Annual Meeting Day, the committee will offer our Buddy Project, which connects a mem-ber of our committee, or other goodwill ambassador from the Society, with two or three new CPAs who passed the exam in 2012. As chair, I’ll greet our guests when they arrive and introduce them to their Buddy. It’s a wonderful opportunity to make new CPAs feel welcome and encourage them to get involved with the Society. I hope to see lots of members visiting with all the new CPAs attending on May 10!

Q: What is your story on becoming involved with the committee?

I became involved with the committee after attending the Annual Meeting as part of the Buddy Project in 2006. I really appreciated having a friendly face meet me when I arrived and thought it would be a great way to get involved.

My goals as chair have been to improve attendance at our fall network-ing event, to look for new ways to reach out across the state to members, and to retain and involve newer members. We are still looking at opportunities to reach out across the state and for new ideas to retain members in the first several years of their careers. Fresh ideas are always welcome, so consider joining our commit-tee for the upcoming year! v

Bills to watch reminder

In the newly updated Governmental Relations section of the Society website,

you’ll find legislation that the Society and its lobbyists are monitoring. A “Bills to Watch” file is posted bi-weekly, through the end of the legislative session. Do not be concerned about the daunting num-ber of bills we monitor. Some bills will fall by the wayside because of the March 8 funnel date, “the deadlines for legislative action set each session by the Senate and the House.” v

Top 10 things to take, or not take, when changing jobsBy Julie Salazar

A job change can come when least expected. Or maybe you have been

planning it for quite some time. In today’s work environment where the line be-tween “work” and “personal” is seldom black and white, it can be difficult to know what you can, should, and should not take with you when you leave your place of employment. This is especially true if your company provides you with a laptop that doubles as your personal computer. While this list of Top 10 things is not all inclusive, it will hopefully get the wheels turning in your mind so you can ensure you are prepared, should the time to change jobs present itself. (Julie’s entire article may be accessed at: http://goo.gl/7gR2K.)

1. Take your contacts – Need to send an email to Dave in HR? Do you know his email? No, but I just start typing ‘Dave,’ and it pops up. Handy, right? Sure – but what if you suddenly didn’t have access to your work email ac-count anymore?

2. Take your personal emails – Have you ever used your work email for personal usage? The honest answer is we all have. Best way to handle: keep a ‘personal’ folder in your inbox and try your best to put all personal emails in it.

3. Don’t take proprietary informa-tion – You may think that because you developed a template or implemented one of your ideas at your place of work that the item you designed is yours for the taking. You might be seriously wrong. If there is any question, it is best to check with your employer.

4. Take emails complementing your job performance – When you get written documentation of accolades, be sure to put them in your personal file and take them with you when you leave.

5. Save your bookmarks or favorite websites – Ask your IT professional to help you locate them if you are not sure where they are.

6. Print benefit information – It is im-portant to save these records so you still have access once your company computer is gone.

7. Save user names and passwords – Nothing is much worse than trying to start a new job and having to contact 20 different places to re-set your user-name and passwords because you left your “list” at your old job.

8. Print and take reviews – Positive

reviews may help you prepare for interviews and may also aid in salary negotiations.

9. Get continuing education records – Many large CPA firms keep track of your CPE for you. This convenience may not be missed until you have to start keep-ing track of it on your own. (Remember, the Iowa Society of CPAs has a CPE tran-script that will post Society-sponsored CPE courses you take as well as let you enter CPE you take elsewhere.)

10. Take your personal items with you – A good rule of thumb is to “always be prepared.” You may be carefully plan-ning a change in employment but you could also be handed a box and asked to leave that day. v

Master the learning curve for a successful start in a new job

By Ken Tysiac

A new survey demonstrates the impor-tance of being prepared to learn as a

new employee. Sixty percent of managers and 44% of workers said learning new processes and procedures is the greatest challenge when starting a new job.

Getting to know a new boss and co-workers was a distant second, iden-tified by one-fifth of managers and

workers. The survey includes responses from 420 working adults employed in an office environment and 1,014 senior managers at U.S. companies with 20 or more employees. Temporary accounting, finance, and bookkeeping staffing service Accountemps developed the survey. Read the entire article here: http://goo.gl/ge86w. v

Money Mammals needs volunteers,

donors

Money Mammals teaches little ones how to save and spend money wisely.

Volunteers visit kindergarten and pre-school classrooms to present a 45-minute program titled Money Mammals: Saving Money Is Fun. The program, spon-sored by ISCPA’s Financial Literacy Committee, has been presented to more than 12,000 students since it was launched in 2009.

The presentation includes showing a video that features fun puppet characters and catchy songs, giving each student their own piggybank, discussing and asking questions to be sure the children understand the message, and providing materials for their parents/guardians. It’s a big hit with both the children and the teachers. They learn:

• To distinguish between wants and needs.

• To make wise choices when spending money.

• Money saved is there for a future need or want.

As the end of the school year ap-proaches, there are still plenty of class-rooms to visit. The Financial Literacy Committee encourages you to reach out to your firm/company and community businesses to help buy more piggybanks and materials for these presentations. Personal donations are also accepted. The committee also asks you to join them in spreading the “Share, Save, and Spend Smart” message to Iowa’s four- to six-year olds. Volunteer now to make a presenta-tion by the end of May or in fall 2013.

What’s your plan of action: volunteer to present, find another speaker, get donations for piggybanks, or all of the above? Your move! v

Governmental conference–May 21

ISCPA’s annual Iowa Governmental Roundtable is scheduled for May 21

at the Holiday Inn Airport in Des Moines. This year’s conference features a new speaker, Eric Berman, MSA, CPA, CGMA, who will present a GASB and Yellow Book update and discuss defined benefit pen-sion standards. Also new to the confer-ence is Ross Manson, with Eide Bailly, who will update participants on IRS reporting requirements on health care reform. Other presentations will cover Iowa TIF issues, mental health legislative changes, and issues in school district and AEA ac-counting and fiscal reporting.

A brochure with detailed informa-tion will be distributed later this month. Registration is available now on the ISCPA website. v

Go green–save money

ISCPA now offers participants at most ISCPA-sponsored CPE programs the

option to receive course materials in a PDF format. If you choose an “eManual” you

will receive a discount on your registration

fee. Remember, however, you will not receive

a printed copy of the manual. Partici-

pants have found the benefits of taking an

eManual are worth it: a quick reference of information using keyword searches, easy to store and access, and it’s a snap to take notes in your eManual. For more informa-tion and tutorials, go to the Professional Education tab on the ISCPA website. v

Easy way to register staff for CPE, renew

memberships

Are you responsible for registering mul-tiple staff at your company or firm?

If so, then we have a special feature just for you. The ISCPA website’s Firm Admin-istrator (FA) function streamlines several routine tasks when registering multiple people for CPE or renewing multiple memberships. Contact the ISCPA office if you are interested in becoming an FA for your company/firm. A tutorial is available on the Professional Education tab of the ISCPA website. v
