Achol, a 65-year old grandmother, lives in Baliet with her daughter and four grandchildren. After the death of her daughter’s husband, Achol’s daughter decided to join her in Baliet since there was no one to take care of her and the children. Achol is one of the many returnees who came back to Baliet in 2019 after the displacement to Akoka in 2013.

As for many returnees, Achol’s life was difficult in her place of habitual residence as she returned with very little household items and clothing from Akoka. “When my family and I came back to Baliet, life was not easy for us because I did not bring anything with me and there is no one helping me here in Baliet,” states Achol. Achol was exposed to environmental elements. She stated that, “I did not have any shelter or blanket, and I was without a mosquito net which exposed me to Malaria”.

Achol’s life drastically improved after receiving a blanket, mosquito net, plastic sheet and cooking

set from SSUDA, with support from the Rapid Response Fund. Achol expressed that, “I no longer use firewood in my house while I sleep to keep warm and deter mosquitos. I now use the firewood for cooking because I am protected from the cold, rain, and mosquitos”. Achol expressed her gratitude to SSUDA and the RRF, saying that she and her family’s health and living standards had improved due to the non-food items provided by the NGO.
