Natural Disasters, Coordination and DRR activity UPDATE: 16-22 August 2017

Khost:

As per initial reports obtained from ANDMA on 14 August, as a result of flood; seven families were reportedly affected and two persons were killed in Matun, Tani, Mosa khail and Nader sha kot districts. The join assessment team consisting of ANDMA, IRC, CARE, RRD and ARCS conduct assessment on 15 August and identified 16 families in need of NFIs and food items. ANDMA will distribute NFIs and food items to all affected families. The assessment in Mosa Khail district is still pending due to security constraints.

Kuner:

As per initial reports obtained from ANDMA on 11 August, as a result of rainfall, eight families were reportedly affected, two persons were killed and five others sustained inju-ries in Nari, Shigal, Asadbad, Chawki and Nurgal districts. A joint assessment team conduct assessment and found three affected families in Asad Abad and Chowki districts. The assessment in Nurgal district is on-going while the assessment in Nari and Shigal districts are pending due to security concerns. IOM distributed NFIs to the affected fami-lies in Asadabad and Chowki districts while food needs has been referred to WFP.

Nangarhar:

As per initial report by ANDMA on 19 August, as a result of flood; 20 families were reportedly affected, two persons were killed, 200 livestock were killed and 200 jeribs of agri-cultural land was affected in Khewa district. The joint assessment team consisting of IOM, WFP, and district authorities conduct assessment and identified 10 families in need of NFIs and food items. IOM will distribute NFIs and family tents on 23 August while the food needs has been referred to WFP.

Laghman:

A flood incident was recorded in Alishang district, a person was killed who was grazing his livestock. ANDMA assisted the family of deceased with provision of NFIs, food and cash 21 August.

Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR):

11 communities were jointly assessed together with ANDMA, DoRRD and district authorities for community based disaster risk management (CBDRM) activities in Dara, Ab-

shar, Shutol and Hese Awal districts of Panjsher province. Of these communities, 3-4 communities will be selected for CBDRM activities that includes two weeks training work-

shop for the community members as well training and equipping the communities on early warning, search and rescue and first aid. The first round of the training workshop

has commenced on 20 August in Deh Kalan village of Shutol district that will continue till 24 August for five days. 44 male and 31 female members of the community, one staff

from ANDMA, DoRRD and district authorities are participating in the training.

Upon completion of the first round of the training, the participants will be able to learn DRR concepts, a participatory risk assessment for Deh Kalan village will be conducted, a

participatory disaster management plan for the community will be developed and community disaster management committee will be formed. Following the first round of

CBDRM training, the second round will commence. The second round will focus on early warning, search and rescue and first aid training as well provision of these equipment

and tool to the community that will enable them be prepared for any natural disaster event.
