Overview

Customer RSI is the supply chain manager for Burger King brand and is the exclusive purchasing agent for Burger King restaurant owners in the United States.

Challenge RSI’s analytic solution centers around a legacy on-premise data warehousing appliance. The appliance requires costly maintenance fees and floor sweeps when it reaches end of support. RSI wants to shift their investment away from large capital and annual expense to a consumption model supported by AWS. With multiple up and downstream impacts, RSI needed assistance with a cloud migration strategy, TCO analysis, and implementation roadmap.

Solution Coadria took an inventory of all impacted systems and applied its cloud fit model to identify the sizing, prioritization, and approach for each application. Each application and system component was categorized as “Re-Host”, “Re-Factor”, or “Re-Place”, and then placed on a migration roadmap to maximize value and minimize risk. We also engaged in a Proof of Value for the loading of data to Amazon Redshift to illustrate the approach for loading huge datasets.

Benefits RSI was able to take our approach, value case, and road map to the board and secure funding for the cloud migration. The success of this workload will pave the road to an “All In” mentality for their cloud journey.

CLOUD FIT ASSESSMENT & ROADMAP Restaurant Services, Inc. (RSI)

Customer Whataburger is a quick-serve restaurant chain focused on burgers, sandwiches in the southern region.

Challenge Whataburger had a need to detect cashier fraud from its POS transactions across all of its 700+ store locations. It was a manual process and huge effort to identify suspect cashier transactions and interview the cashiers/supervisors for such locations on regular basis.

Solution Coadria helped Whataburger architect, build & develop solution for detecting fraud for POS transactions on near real-time basis using machine learning algorithms and models. The solution was developed in Hadoop (IBM BigInsights) platform involving Apache Spark, BigSQL, Hive, HDFS, Netezza & MicroStrategy. Transactions were loaded in micro batches and data was scored to identify potential frauds. Alerts were sent to users whenever such potential fraud transactions were identified.

Benefits Leveraging the new Hadoop platform, Whataburger was able to identify potential fraud transactions across all of its locations on near real-time basis avoiding manual efforts and time consumption.

FRAUD ANALYTICS Whataburger

Business Challenge DFW Airport is embarking upon a new program called Travel Transformed with enterprise wide strategic goals from operational excellence to customer engagement. Data and access to that data are core to achieving these strategic results with the ultimate goal of choreographing the travel experience for each of its 64+ million passengers each year. Before starting its cloud journey, DFW Airport couldn’t imagine scaling and securing such a solution with traditional infrastructure and services.

Solution Description AWS provided a platform to innovate without limits and created a framework for growth. In its first application for Travel Transformed, DFW FAA flight information and position tracking information for all inbound and outbound flights. This data is streamed into Kinesis and subsequently loaded into Redshift for analytics. Core visualizations are provided by MicroStrategy reports and dashboards while an Alexa skill enhances the UI providing airport employees with critical information from their desk, conference room, home, or the operations center. The Alexa platform, Alexalytics, provides DFW a framework for skill authentication, managing KPI’s, and accelerates voice UI deployments.

Benefits & Supporting Metrics The solution provided a base reference architecture for ingesting and analyzing future data streams. Concessionaires are able to use the solution to predict staffing levels based expected traffic. Operations are able to quickly determine optimal flow and how delays, cancellations, and taxi times are impacting them. Future data sources on the framework will enhance the analytics with schedules, weather impacts, etc.

Innovation While the data ingestion framework is quite common, the integration of Alexa provides a unique UI for users. We’ve also added some innovative functionality to allow Alexa to interact with visual reports via voice. “Alexa, what are current conditions at the airport? Alexa, show me why taxi time is above average for today.”
