IOC/UNESCO, UNESCO Сhairs and WMO Regional Meteorological Training Center Programmes
Lev KarlinRussian State Hydrometeorological University (RSHU)
Baltic Floating University is a long-term educational project developed and carried out by the RSHU staff
The “Training-Through-Research” (TTR) principle is being developed and applied through the project. TTR programme puts together the advantages of the formal training of undergraduate and postgraduate students and young scientists with the experiences gained in advanced research
A recognized BFU peculiarity is a two-ship operation
BFU uses in parallel two training platforms: a big oceanographic vessel for studies in the open Baltic Sea and a sailing catamaran for investigations in its shallow coastal waters
BFU educational cycle Shipboard data collection, processing and analysis
BFU educational cycle training in writing reports and research papers annual publication of the research results in “BFU
Research Bulletin”
International educational collaboration
Cooperation with the “Baltic University Programme”, coordinated by Uppsala University, Sweden, which was started in 1999
The BFU project has stimulated the development of international contacts with other European universities:
Cadiz (Spain)
Aveiro (Portugal)
Bologna (Italy)
Plymouth (UK)
This cooperation implies the student exchange and joint seminars. Students of these Universities take part in annual summer cruises of the Baltic Floating University
International educational collaboration
BFU provides the experience of various scientific research and also the international communication for students
Through this BFU promotes the students’ participation in other European projects such as Erasmus Mundus programme — a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education
The scientific component of BFU programme has contributed to an inter-programme cooperation in frames of operational oceanographic systems development for the Baltic region, such as BOOS (Baltic Operational Oceanographic System), and ECOOP (European Coastal sea Operational Observing and Forecasting system)
BFU students are involved in these projects

RSHU-UNESCO Chair in Remote Sensing and Modeling in Oceanography has participated in the developments of several water quality parameters on the base of the remote sensed data.
Presented research topics include the development of satellite data methods for the studying of chlorophyll-a, algal blooms, turbidity, suspended solids, and bathymetry in the Baltic Sea and coastal areas. The research is performed in collaboration with the ICO/UNESCO Sectors, NIERSC, VSEGEI, and other organizations.
