FIMAI - International Industrial Environment and Sustainability Fair, which will take place from 6th to 8th November 2012 in Sao Paulo, is in its 14th edition and is recognized as the major event for environmental technologies sector in Latin America.

FIMAI is the partner fair of IFAT (largest environmental fair in the world, www.ifat.de) for the Latin American market, which confirms the fact that it is the fair with the highest credibility within this sector in Brazil.

In 2011, the fair boasted more than 420 exhibitors, among which more than a hundred were international companies from 15 different countries such as: Argentina, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the USA. The fair also received approximately 30,000 visitors during the 3 days of exhibition.

The market Brazil is the largest country in Latin America in terms of both area (8.5 million m²) and number of inhabitants (193 million), the strongest and most stable industrial nation in South America and, consequently, the country with most political influence in the South of the continent and in the free trade zone (Mercosur). However, the size of the country also has problems that interest the sector of environmental technologies. In 60 years, the urban population grew from 25% to 80% (2005) and, mainly, there has been no planning for this high concentration in the urban centers.

Additionally, the industries have moved to the interior (since 1990) and the conditions have become catastrophic in the Brazilian metropolises. All of these movements, added to the minimal environmental education given to the citizens until the beginning of the 1990s, mean that Brazil is far from becoming an environmental powerhouse, despite having one of the most modern environmental legislations. According to estimates, 80% of the Brazilian population is concerned with the environment, however the care developed by them is restricted only to daily tasks, like, for example, how to avoid wasting water. Furthermore, due to an increasing number of the population concerned with these issues, as well as the ratification of new laws, the search for companies that operate in the sector of environmental services grew 30% in Brazil in 2010, and the industries invested 25% more in these services. It has been estimated that the sector of environmental technologies and services should have a growth between 5% and 7% by the year 2020. The greatest opportunities for the Swiss companies in the Brazilian market are in the areas of renewable energies, optimization of water usage as well as treatment and sanitation, and management of solid waste, among others. Today, in the sector of water treatment, we also have 34.8 million people with no access to the sewer collection system, on top of which it is estimated that 50% of the sewage in Brazil does not receive any type of treatment before it is dumped in rivers and tributaries. In the state of São Paulo alone, R$ 195 million will be invested in the following years to depollute rivers and streams, and more than R$ 8.6 billion by 2013 to increase the water supply system as well as the sewer treatment system in order to achieve rates of 100% and 88%, respectively. In terms of opportunities in the sector of renewable energies, Brazil uses 89% of renewable sources to generate electricity – mostly originating from hydroelectric power plants -, the global average being 18%, and we also have 30% of the fleet of Brazilian vehicles circulating with fuels originating from renewable sources (ethanol). However, there is an increasing need for technologies used in the installation of structures to generate mainly eolic and solar energy, and we also have the obligation to install the photovoltaic cells in new buildings in the city of São Paulo. Now the sector of solid waste management is booming due to the approval of the Política Nacional de Resíduos Sólidos (National Solid Waste Policy) at the end of 2010, which now regulates the reversed logistics as well as other matters of waste after its lifecycle.
