NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS

Speaker: Jonathan Porter - Senior Scientist, National Laboratory Service

Microbial Source Tracking (MST) is a new methodology that provides reliable information as to the source of pollution. MST is based on genetic sequences, DNA that is unique to particular animal groups.

Developed by the National Laboratory Service (NLS), MST can be semi-quantitive, allowing different sources of faecal pollution to be ranked. This can help pinpoint the sources of pollution, for example on a bathing beach following heavy rains.

Key topics include:

MST explained - how the method distinguishes between human sewage and animal manures

Bathing waters case study - practical application of the technique

Further developments to the technique - including the identification of faecal pollution from birds

The European Water and Wastewater Management Conference offers superb and unique networking opportunities. Be part of this prestigious conference by sponsoring or exhibiting.

Sponsorship and marketing opportunities available include session sponsorship, inserts in delegate packs and advertising in the conference programme.

The aim of the exhibition is to provide a relaxed and informal setting for attendees to meet with the key suppliers to the industry. This is the ideal platform for your organisation to promote the products and services that you offer:

SPONSORSHIP & EXHIBITION

3m x 2m stand space

250+ delegates over the 2 days

Keep in close contact with key people in the industry

Delegates and speakers represent water companies, consultancies, technical associations, universities, research establishments, process suppliers, Government departments and agencies, and contractors

Lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments are served in the exhibition area which allows approximately 2 hours per day to network with potential clients

Please contact Sally to discuss you requirements on Tel 01924 257891 [email protected]

Through One NorthEast and Beta Technology, Mouchel has been working on an EU project to develop a European Environmental Technologies Verification (ETV) scheme to objectively validate performance related claims of environmental technologies and products to accelerate their market acceptance and uptake. For technology providers, persuading the market of the benefits of a particular technology can be a difficult and daunting one. The links between the provider and the end user / purchaser need strengthening to instil both confidence and acceptability for all parties.

During this interactive session a number of energy and water related technologies will be showcased and some of the key project areas for discussion will include:

The types of claims that can be put forward

The verification model used to asses the claims

Test centres and verification bodies

Benefits, opportunities and timescales

MOUCHEL WORKSHOP

ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY VERIFICATION (ETV) TO ACCELERATE UPTAKE OF NOVEL ENERGY AND WATER RELATED TECHNOLOGIES

Speakers: Fiona Griffith (Mouchel), Caroline Wadsworth (Beta Technology), and a selection of technology companies (TBC)

Page 6: INVITATION TO REGISTER - Groundwater · water quality issues disinfection treatment technologies 3rd european water and wastewater management conference qua enviro technology transfer

A discussion of Europe’s present economic crisis is perhaps an

unusual way to start an Introduction to a Conference on Water

and Wastewater Management, but as members of an industry

that is heavily dependent upon the health of the economy,

delegates today will be hoping that the recession will be short

and swift. The past decade has seen huge investments and

with this has come problems of staff recruitment and retention.

There has also been very little time available to provide the staff

training and updating that is essential to allow Companies to

keep ahead of the technology. This event is a good starting

point to rectify that deficiency.

The breadth of papers and workshops on offer reflects the

current thinking and industry drivers. As last year, carbon

reduction and energy management are still the most popular

topics. The related broad topic of sustainable engineering

showing how engineers are making major contributions to

reduce the impact of human activities. The more traditional

areas of water and wastewater treatment are consolidating and

with no major new legislation on the horizon there are few new

technology initiatives but many examples of process

improvements and enhancements.

Workshop sessions proved very popular last year and so we have

continued with these for the 3rd Annual Conference. This

year’s sponsors, National Laboratory Service have put together

a very exciting workshop on “Tracking the Source of Pollution”

and with an additional workshop on “Environmental

Technology Verification (ETV) to Accelerate Uptake of Novel

Energy and Water Related Technologies”' hosted by Mouchel.

Many delegates value the conference as an opportunity to meet

and discuss with colleagues in an informal atmosphere; social

opportunities can be as important as the technical debates. In

addition to the pre-conference Birmingham Balti night, there

will be the traditional conference dinner always well attended

and a talking point the next morning. The conference

combines the opportunity to keep up-to -date with current

thinking and technical advances, see old colleagues and meet

the new generation of water engineers and scientists.
