INVITATION We invite you to join this year’s Philanthropy Australia National Conference in Melbourne on 5-6 September.

The theme of this year’s conference is Purpose: Is it enough? and it will explore and debate the options and choices within philanthropy, as well as the tensions and challenges. This year’s event will challenge, inspire and provoke thinking by probing the idiosyncrasies and complexities of philanthropic practice throughout the conference program.

With more than 500 delegates and a first-rate speaker line-up, Philanthropy Australia’s biennial conference is the premier event on the Australasian philanthropy calendar, bringing together the world’s best philanthropic minds with local practitioners at all levels.

The program includes a dynamic mix of keynote presentations, panels, in-conversation sessions, smaller concurrent working sessions and networking drinks across two days – with more opportunities than ever to engage with a captive and engaged audience.

We’d love to chat with you to understand how we can partner to help you meet your specific interests and needs and make this the best Philanthropy Australia National Conference to date. Thank you for the opportunity to share this with you!

INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE SPEAKERS AND SESSIONS (Plenary partnership opportunities)

Larry KramerPresident, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (USA)

Fred Blackwell CEO, The San Francisco Foundation (USA)

Danielle Walker PalmourDirector, Friends Provident Foundation (UK)

Purpose: Is it enough?

Setting the tone for the conference, Larry will make the case for why philanthropy must be fearless – it’s not enough to just want to do good, because that alone won’t be enough to address the global challenges that confront us.

Larry will emphasise philanthropy’s role as change agent, presenting two case studies from the Hewlett Foundation’s work: 1) addressing political polarisation in the US; and 2) focusing on the problem of trustworthy cyber systems.

Reshaping Strategy to Achieve Purpose – How The San Francisco Foundation Did it

The San Francisco Foundation is committed to a bold equity agenda that advances greater racial and economic inclusion for everyone in the Bay Area. Fred will share the story of how the Foundation reshaped its strategic direction under his leadership, moving away from a broad approach to grantmaking and towards one more deliberately focused on people, place and power.

(No longer available - presented by Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation)

We Must Rock the Boat to Get to Our Destination

Friends Provident Foundation is a medium sized foundation with a big ambition – to use all of its assets to bring about a fair and sustainable economic system; in our lifetime and for our children. As a result, people often ask if they are taking on an impossible and possibly ridiculous challenge. Danielle Walker Palmourwill argue – by sharing its strategy, its approach to using its assets, new results from an evaluation of its work and its struggles to date – that attempting to disrupt the status quo is a vital challenge for all foundations and philanthropists no matter their size or mission.

PRESENTING PARTNER ($10,000)In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be up to 20 smaller concurrent sessions programmed over the two days. These concurrent sessions allow delegates to delve deeply into specific topics and explore the ‘so what?’ – that is, what do we actually want to do with the challenges, ideas and provocations facing our sector and the broader community?

As Presenting Partner of one of these sessions you will align yourself with a specific topic and gain access to a smaller but more focused audience.

The concurrent program is being finalised and sessions are being added to the day one and day two programs as they are confirmed.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES:

MASTERCLASS PARTNER ($2,000 – 14 available)

We are pleased to offer an array of pre-conference Masterclasses. These three-hour masterclasses will be held the day prior to the Philanthropy Australia National Conference (Tuesday 4 September) in the same venue – the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

Masterclasses are separate but complementary to the conference and share thought leadership and best practice on a number of specific topics, including how to engage women donors; how systems change can transform your philanthropy; measuring and reporting; and running a PAF, to name just a few! The confirmed masterclass program can be found here.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES:

SCHOLARSHIPS ($2,000 per scholarship)

Scholarships provide a terrific opportunity for leaders of for-purpose/not-for-profit organisations to attend the conference, who would otherwise be unable to due to financial restraints. The investment per scholarship is $2,000 and it includes the cost of a conference ticket as well as incidentals that the delegate may incur travelling to and during the conference.

Philanthropy Australia will happily identify appropriate leaders from the for-purpose/not-for-profit sector. Alternatively, you might already work with and have some in mind – in which case we’re happy for you to nominate your own scholarship recipients.

Last conference (2016), 26 delegates from across Australia were able to attend thanks to a scholarship. This year, we’d love to up the number of scholarships to 40!

A few recipient organisations in 2016:
