ZIRAT23INVITED SPEAKERS

Dr. Mhairi Gass joined Amec Foster Wheeler in 2010 and is currently the technical lead for core materials research, which focuses on understanding the behaviour of zirconium alloys in light water conditions. This involves a number of test programs, predominately concentration on delivering corrosion data with a detailed characterisation campaign to develop mechanistic understanding. Prior to joining Amec Foster Wheeler, Mhairi’s work concentrated on developing transmission electron microscopy

techniques for application to a range of material systems with positions at both the University of Cambridge, and subsequently as research director for the UK’s Super STEM facility, which provided atomic resolution imaging and spectroscopy to both the academic and industrial communities.

Dr. Gary Was is the Walter J. Weber, Jr. Professor of Sustainable Energy, Environmental and Earth Systems Engineering and holds appointments in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, and Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. He has held positions as Director of the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering and Chair of the Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences Department. Professor Was’s research is focused on materials for

advanced nuclear energy systems and radiation materials science, including environmental effects on materials, radiation effects, ion beam surface modification of materials and nuclear fuels. He is a Fellow of TMS, the Materials Research Society, ASM International, NACE international and the American Nuclear Society and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nuclear Materials.

LCC14INVITED SPEAKERS

Dr. Jiaxin Chen joined Studsvik in 1997 and currently works as Senior Specialist in fuel crud and oxide characterisation in Studsvik Corrosion and Water Chemistry Laboratory. He was adjunct professor at Chalmers University of Technology during 2014-2016. His recent research interests include microstructural characterisation of fuel crud and solids in LWR coolant; corrosion kinetics of reactor material surfaces in LWR primary coolant; characterisation of

radioactive deposit on LWR piping surfaces; stability of neutron absorber materials in reactor coolant. In the field of PWR fuel crud, he and his colleagues at Studsvik have made some significant experimental findings that are of high value for the industry.

Dr. Christoph Weber obtained his Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Heidelberg (Germany). After his PhD in physical chemistry, he joined Kernkraftwerk Mühleberg (Switzerland). Between 1991 and 2002 he worked as a technical employee, QS Manager and deputy Manager in the radwaste department. In 2002 he changed to Chemistry as Division Manager. In this time KKM was the first plant who installed OLNC as a technique to

protect core internals from IGSCC. Since Nov. 2018 he is as a Senior Expert in the Department of Surveillance, responsible for chemistry and radwaste questions related to the decommissioning of the plant in 2020.
