OctaviaOctavia is described as a city suspended in aspiders web. I started sketching ideas forOctavia I imagined tangles of web and thecontrast of cliffs and sky. I came up with apurple colour palette because I linked the imageof a spider with the symbol of poison, which is

    usually purple.

EsmerldaEsmerlda is a city mainly submerged in water.I found this one difficult to picture, so I foundthat creating more abstract thumbnails weremore helpful for me to vision a final piece. I

used a lot of ocean imagery for thesesketches. (Bottom image is by ZenaHolloway- underwater photographer.)

AnastasiaThis city was maybe myfavourite to create thumbnailsfor. The city is described asbeautiful place with an addictivesoul. It plays on the temptationsof humanity and holds thedesires that one would crave. To

me this is like the Devilssummer home, pretty but with adark truth behind it. I have avery clear image in my head ofwhat this city should look like, but I had a hard time portrayingmy vision in these thumbnails. Iknow I can improve it if I workedmore on it.

ArgiaAn underground city was a very interestingconcept to work with. I really wanted tocreate a similar effect of city lights at night. Iwanted Argias soft glowing lights twinklinglike stars in an underground maze of housesand buildings. And with the release of the

stop- motion picture Boxtrolls coming out, Ifound something else to visually base thesethumbnails on.

BaucisBaucis is a city suspended in the sky uponstilts. When drawing these thumbnails I wasgetting to the point of repeating myself. Istarted to feel I was getting too repetitive. Ididnt want to make the same idea overagain, so these images were getting more

tricky to finish. I decided I liked the idea ofthe city having heavy wooden buildingsbalanced on thin stick stilts. I like the factthat this city could fall over if someonebreathed on it; I got the idea from a film.

DiomiraThis was another city that I got excited to do.The description of it tells me its a religiousand sci-fi styled city. Made up from domestructured buildings I based my thumbnailson circular shapes. Then I started to look at

planets as a visual aid, thats when I createda back story for this city. This civilisation isvery focused on the Gods that are depictedthere in bronze statues. In mythology andancient legends, the Gods are connectedwith the sky. And since this city wasportrayed futuristic and sci-fi in my head, Ithen thought of the planets in the solarsystem and thought of them as Godswatching over our Earth. Diomira is a city

where the buildings are not just domes, butare planet-like spheres that float in the sky. This is done in the hope that the people ofDiomira will join the Gods/planets in the sky.

FedoraFedora is a city of grey metallic buildings.Every room has a sphere floating in thecentre showing what the city could look like.Ill be honest. This one bored me. I didntwant to work in grey colour, so I used acolourful background and focused mainly on

my drawings. Didnt like this one. At all.

ArmillaWhen reading about this city, it reminded meof rusting metal. I instantly got the image of ajunk yard, with no order or structure. Ithought of the film adaptation of The Iron

Giant, where there is a scrap metal yard fullof rusting metal and trash. I used a lot ofscribbling to create the untamed form of thecity.

More OctaviaThumbnailsGoing into further development Ifocused more on the cities I wasinterested in and Octavia was one ofthem. I loved the image of a city

suspended in a tangled mess of webs. The description of the city soundedmessy and disorganised, whichreminded me of my room, so Iillustrated the city in a bedroomsetting as if a child used it as theirplay room. Then I went back to digitalwork again.

    What Next?

I feel out of all the cities I studied, I worked best with Octavia as a city. I think that the effect of spider websreally interpret my style well and best suits me. But thats why I wont choose Octavia as the city I will focusof this brief. I want to do a city Im interested in and that will give me a challenge for the future, and I feel thOctavia quite simple and so I wont be able to develop my work my further. I will choose Anastasia as my cit

have a lot of ideas that will really challenge me as an artist to do. I feel that I will learn more from working wwill create a lot of development and include many different influences along the way. I want to be able to tethrough my work, and make it in an illustrative manner. I love pictures that have a lot going on in them, andvisions of Anastasia in my head are full and colourful. Thats why I want to work with this city.
