2012 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear FrienD,
Every year, the YMCA of Greater Boston brings together over 125,000 individuals to promote healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility. During 2012, our Y continued to improve our community’s health and well being, and experienced many exciting changes and accomplishments.
In 2012, we launched our Y Works for Teens agenda and Blueprint for Child Achievement initiative. The new teen agenda provides common vision and goals while creating greater access to adult role models and safe spaces. Every month, over 2,100 teens across Boston attended programs for recreation, leadership and learning opportunities.
Our Blueprint for Child Achievement initiative is strengthening our childhood education programs by supporting academic achievement and literacy in our out- of-school time programs, combating summer learning loss and addressing school readiness in our early childhood programs. This effort will ensure that the Y is providing a high quality educational experience in every program for every child.
This past year also marked the very special 100th anniversary, and the beginning of the highly anticipated renovation, of the Huntington Avenue Y. The Huntington Y plays an important role for those most in need of our services and has always been a place where people can grow as individuals and collectively as a caring and vibrant community. These improvements will include an aquatics center, dedicated space for youth, and a state of the art health and wellness center. This investment will help to position the Huntington Avenue Y as an accessible contemporary community center for the next 100 years.
In 2012, we also partnered with the Joslin Diabetes Center to launch the Why WAIT Type 2 Diabetes program, a multidisciplinary program for weight management and diabetes control. The YMCA of Greater Boston continues to lead the way with our preventative health care programs and knows that healthy lifestyles are achieved through nurturing mind, body and spirit. We continue to offer a broad range of research-based programs that target many specific health issues. Whether an individual is recovering from cancer, trying to manage their diabetes, or improving their overall health, the Y is there to help them achieve their goals.
Inside are just a few stories from young adults, who with your support, are accomplishing great things with the help of the Y. We are grateful for your commitment to our mission and our work. Working together we are strengthening our community. Best regards,
Jeff Conway Kevin Washington John G. ConleyChair of the Board, 2013 President & CEO Chair of the Board, 2012

HEALTHY LIvING Jeremy, 16 “The YMCa has really put me on the right path,” said 16 year
old Jeremy. Jeremy first started coming to the Y as a child when his mother, a single parent, enrolled Jeremy and his sister in programs after school. Jeremy remembers when he first started coming to the Y, “I was non-active, overweight, and shy. I had never participated in any type of sport before and will admit that I had a bad attitude.” During middle school, Jeremy started to play basketball after school in the gym and quickly discovered how much he loved it. “I was hooked! I started coming to the Y all the time, joined the traveling basketball team, began working out and even started interning at the Y. “
Jeremy is now a teen employee at the Wang YMCA of Chinatown, where he coaches preschool sports classes and is a friendly face to all those who come to the Y. “I see how guys my age just hang around after school using drugs and alcohol, and I think how that could have been me. I’m glad that I have someplace where I can play basketball and be around positive people. Everyone is always telling me how much I have matured and opened up over the past few years, and I know that I am where I am today because of the Y.”
Community ImpactThe YMCA of Greater Boston is dedicated to improving the health of mind, body and spirit of individuals and families in our communities. As the community’s leading non-profit, we are dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving our community’s health and well-being and providing opportunities to give back and support our neighbors. At
the Y no family is turned away because of their inability to pay, as we strongly believe that everyone should be given the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive in a Y program.
The Y provided over $3 million in direct
financial assistance and scholarships in 2012.
MILLIONOver 1,000 people
volunteer at the YMCa of Greater
Boston each year.
Over 3,000 children participate in our
out-of-school time programs each year.

armani, 15 “We are like a family here at Egleston Square Y,” said Armani,
member of the Egleston Square YMCA’s Leaders Club, a program that gives teens the opportunity to improve their individual leadership and social skills while also experiencing new ways to give back to the community. Armani, now 15, first started coming to the Egleston Square Y because he wanted to help improve the community. “I was tired of just hanging out. I wanted to give back and help my neighborhood reach its potential.”
“Being a part of the Leaders Club has really helped me to progress. It has instilled in me the values I will need to succeed and has given me opportunities to make my neighborhood a better place to live. I look up to a lot of the older guys here and know that I have a place to come for support.” When asked if he thinks he is a role model for younger kids at the Y he smiles, “I never really thought about it, but yeah, I guess I am.”

elaines, 17 “At Y Achievers, I found a new support system which is guiding me
through the college application process,” said 17 year old Elaines. The eleventh grader from Roxbury has been participating in the Y Achievers Pathways program, our innovative approach to prepare teens for the SAT and the college application process. In 2012, the Y expanded the Pathways program from one site to seven YMCAs throughout Boston.
“While my parents are really supportive of my college dream they don’t have a lot of knowledge about the application process, and I found that I needed extra help and guidance. The Y Achievers program is helping me make the decisions that will impact my future and is preparing me for my SATs and college applications.” After graduation, Elaines plans to attend a university in the New england area.
