Program Components
Introduction
This guide describes the program components available for Investigations in Number, Data, and Space © 2012 for the Common Core State Standards.
Core Curriculum Package
The main teaching component is the Core Curriculum Package. Here, you will find your Investigations teaching essentials.
Curriculum Units
Each grade level consists of a series of curriculum units, or Teacher’s Editions. Each Investigations session, or lesson, is presented through the exploration of major mathematical ideas.
Approaching the mathematics content through investigation helps students develop flexibility and confidence in approaching problems, fluency in using mathematical skills and tools to solve problems, and proficiency in evaluating their solutions. Students also build a repertoire of ways to communicate their mathematical thinking, while their enjoyment and application ofmathematics grows.

Implementing Investigations Guide
At each grade level, the Implementing Investigations guide includes
• an overview of the curriculum as a whole and at that grade level;
• a closer look at the mathematics content, organized by strand, that includes lists of the Math Focus Points and benchmarks;
• summaries of the Classroom Routines and/or Ten-Minute Math activities, including the variations that will be explored over the course of the year;
• program-wide Teacher Notes that explain some key ideas underlying the curriculum;
• a set of case studies about working with a range of learners that you can use for professional development;
• scope and sequence information for the previous grade, the current grade, and the subsequent grade; and • a full program index.
Differentiation and Intervention Guide
The Differentiation and Intervention Guide offers further support in meeting the needs of the range of learners in any classroom. Available for Grades 1–5, this guide provides support for each Investigation, including
• information about the important mathematics, and help determining whether students understand, partially understand, or do not yet understand it;
• an Extension, Practice, and Intervention activity, each with support for teaching English language learners; and• blackline masters, including an optional quiz.

Investigations and the Common Core State Standards Guide
Investigations and the Common Core State Standards guide is designed to support you and your schools that use Investigations in implementing the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM). These companion materials are designed for you to use in conjunction with the curriculum units (© 2008 or later) at each grade level within Grades K–5.
Each grade-level book contains the following:
• “Snap-in” instructional plans for each curriculum unit with a table for each Investigation
• All of the necessary teacher and student materials for new activities and sessions• Detailed correlations between the CCSSM and Investigations

Student Resources
The main student resources include the Student Activity Book and the Student Math Handbook.
Student Activity Book
Available by unit or for the whole year, the Student Activity Book contains all of the consumable pages for student work, including in-class work, such as activity sheets, recording sheets for math games, homework sheets, and practice pages. It is available in English or Spanish, in hard copy or online, and as three- and six-year subscriptions. The print version of the Student Activity Books, Single Volume, is also available as a Common Core Edition.
Student Math Handbook
The Student Math Handbook offers a valuable reference to the math words and ideas introduced in the curriculum units, as well as game directions for the games for a particular grade level. Available as a hardcover book in Grades 1–5 and as a flip chart in Grades K–2, this resource is designed for you to use flexibly—as a resource for students during class work, as a book students can take home for reference while doing homework and playing math games with their families, and/or as a reference for families to better understand the work their children are doing in class.

Digital Resources
The digital resources include Investigations for the Interactive Whiteboard, Shapes and LogoPaths Software, the Resource Masters CD-ROM, ExamView® Tests to Assess New Standards CD-ROM, and SuccessTracker for the Common Core State Standards.
Investigations for the Interactive Whiteboard
With support for almost every Session, you can use the interactive whiteboard to do the day’s Classroom Routine or Ten-Minute Math, introduce a game or activity, facilitate a discussion, or illustrate a particular idea or solution. Students can use the interactive whiteboard to play a game or do an activity during the Math Workshop, and you can use these activities to work with small groups.
Shapes
In Grades K–2, Shapes Software provides an environment in which students investigate a variety of geometric ideas, including how different shapes go together, relationships between shapes, how shapes combine to make other shapes, patterning and tiling, symmetry, and geometric transformations such as rotations (turns), translations (slides), and reflections (flips).
