Investigation 3
Networks
Problem of The Day
• A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river. He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing. If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken. If the chicken and the corn is left together, the chicken will eat the corn.
• How does the man do it?
Pacman!
• Draw a path that Pacman can follow to eat his four cherry topped cupcakes!
3.1 Making Rounds
Find similar monsters and sit together in your group.
Complete Problem 3.1 in your monster group.
Use a sheet on chart paper to create an ICE for Follow Up 3.1
Investigation 3 Overview
• To explore network applications• To analyze the number of paths in a
network• To compare the structures of networks
and problems involving combinations• To create networks that satisfy given
constraints
ALCOS Objective 14
3.1 Homework
• ACE Problem 1
Problem of the Day
• There is one bus with seven girls in it. Each girl has 7 backpacks and each backpack has seven big cats. Each big cat has seven little cats.
• How many legs are there all together?
3.2 Networking
Form groups so that there is one backpack, one cat, and one girl in each group.
Vocabulary Activity
(fold paper in half, on the left students will illustrate their interpretation of a network, on the right the teacher will give a formal definition with picture of a network)
Vocabulary
• Network: A graph or diagram showing all the different ways to get from one point to another by passing through specific points.
• Node: The beginning point, ending point and other points passed through in a network.
• Edge: A path followed between nodes.

Problem Of the Day-TPS
• Jeanine leaves the library and walks toward the pool at the same time as Miguel leaves the pool and walks toward the library. Neither person follows a particular route, except that both are always moving toward their destination. What is the probability that they will meet if they both walk at the same rate?
Solving the POD…
• If the two will meet that will happen at one of the points on the diagonal.
• Now you calculate the probabilities of meeting at each of the points on the diagonal and add them up.
• Share your solutions and how you solved the problem.
