My warm congratulations to The Op-pidan Press, who have yet again pulled off the ‘Top 100’ initiative for the 3rd time at Rhodes, under the impressive and able leadership of Jamie Be-zuidenhout. As always, reading about the achievements of the ‘cream of the crop’ at Rhodes has been inspiring and impressive. It is indeed a privilege and an honour to be Dean of Students at a University where so many of our stu-dents take such amazing advantage of the brief opportunity available to them during their time as students, and who get wholeheartedly involved in extra-mural activities while maintaining a solid academic record.

We have students with perfect records who have been on the Deans’ lists throughout their time at Rhodes; we have students who have dedicated hours of their time working towards the uplift-ment of our local community, and we have others who energetically espouse particular causes such as HIV AIDS, hu-man rights violations and environmental issues. Our SRC, sub-wardens, house committee members, society chairper-sons, and sports captains have excelled themselves. And we have superb sports-women and men, musicians and artists and entertainers.

Not one of them has had a serious academic or disciplinary ‘blemish’ recently. Not one of them has lost a DP or received a June warning in the past 2 years. More than just that, in the DoS Leadership and Academic categories the winning candidates are all fine role-models, and I have little doubt that the readers of this edition will be inspired by their talent, energy and passion. Our

motto is “Where leaders learn” and there is little doubt in my mind that each of our top 100 students will go out into the world once they have completed their degrees, make a positive contribution to society and show everyone what Rhodes students can do.

The secret of real success at University is in finding the right balance between work and extra-curricular activities. This requires engagement with a wide range of new experiences and opportunities, many of them outside the classroom. During this active process, students begin to understand their strengths and work on their weaknesses, and acquire qualities which will enable them to become critical and engaged citizens in our new democracy. This sort of learning is voluntary, and takes place outside the formal classroom. I am sure all of our top 100 students will agree that they have learned a lot, and that the effort was extremely worthwhile.

I am well aware that there are far more than these 100 students who are also outstanding in many ways, and are not yet acknowledged or listed in these pages. Many of you were probably too modest to put your names forward and left it to others to nominate deserving candidates. Next year please don’t let that happen - we would like to recognise all deserving students.

My personal congratulations goes to each of the students listed in this edition, who have risen to the top through sheer hard work and dedication.

Having been part of the adjudication process, exposed to the intense discussions around who is to be included as part of this list, I wish to extend well-deserved congratulations to all those who have been included in the 2012 Investec Rhodes Top 100 list.

It takes committed and hard-working people to be part of such a prestigious community. Those who make it onto this list possess a rare combination of traits and abilities. They are performances driven by action-oriented people “who walk the talk”.

We at Investec are delighted to provide, in partnership with Rhodes University and The Oppidan Press, a platform that acknowledg-es and celebrates such leadership potential, qualities and abilities, for it is celebrating others that encourages them to continue delivering all-round. We also believe that the creation of this list connects like-mind-ed people who will not only celebrate each other but will draw from each other in more ways than one, not only for the better-ment of their own lives but those of their

communities and society at large.

All successful participants are requested to make use of this achievement and recognition to accomplish even the small-est of jobs with perfection. This is because each time one conquers the smallest task, it lets them grow stronger, enabling them to take on an even bigger task. All of you are on your way to doing some great things indeed. I would like to remind winners that the more successful they become, the more they need to inspire others to follow their passions and aspirations. True leadership is about taking others along.

Due to the socio-economic challenges facing South Africa and the world, there is a need for people who are passionate, hard-working and committed to their chosen spaces as well as to the empowerment of others. Those who make it onto this list are representative of such people and we hope to see this community grow over the years.

Dr Vivian de Klerk — General Excellence and Dean of Students LeadershipVivian de Klerk has been the Dean of Students at Rhodes University since 2007. She obtained her BA (Hons) and MA de-grees cum laude from Rhodes and a PhD from UCT, as well as completing an HDE degree from Unisa. She was Professor and Head of the Department of English Language and Linguistics from 1991 to 2006, and was awarded the Rhodes Vice Chancellor’s Senior Research Award in 2004.

Larissa Klazinga — Dean of Students LeadershipLarissa Klazinga is the Student Services Officer at the University’s Dean of Stu-dents offices. In addition to working with the Dean of Students, Klazinga is also the Lilian Ngoyi Hall Warden and the Student Anti-Harassment Officer. Commenting on the students who made the Top 100, Klaz-inga said, “They have shown exceptional leadership skills, they are committed and hard-working, and this award celebrates their endeavours.”

Eric Ofei — General Excellence and Dean of Students Leadership It is the breadth and intensity of his leadership experiences that define Eric Ofei most completely. During his years at Rhodes, Ofei has displayed an interest in service. He has been active in community engagement volunteering programmes and participated regularly in residence

sports and student governance. In particu-lar, he has been SRC President, Hall senior student, a society president and a class representative (2007-2010). Ofei is cur-rently the SRC Student Liaison Officer.

Dr Kenneth Ngcoza — Community EngagementDr Kenneth Ngcoza is a science education lecturer in the Education Faculty and has been involved in establishing the MiST Research Centre. Ngcoza is also involved with The Khula Programme, which won the 2009 Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Community Engagement Award. The programme teaches senior school learn-ers valuable skills in areas such as maths and science, which allows them to assist their teachers in educating their class-mates in these subjects.

Setlogane Manchidi — Commerce and FinanceSetlogane Manchidi, Head of Investec’s Corporate Social Investment division in South Africa, was awarded an Honours degree in Social Policy and Management with distinction from the University of Cape Town (UCT). After graduating, he worked for Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) as an organisation and human performance business analyst and consult-ant, before joining Investec as a CSI con-sultant in 2003. He headed up the division in 2005. Investec CSI, under Setlogane’s stewardship received the 2009 Sunday Times Top 100 CSI Leadership Award.

Sarah Green — Commerce and FinanceSarah Green is currently the Head of the Career Centre at Rhodes University and has been in this position for just over a year. Green has worked with students at Rhodes University for 8 years as a counselling psychologist — 7 of these in the Counselling Centre and enjoys the challenge of interacting and assisting students with finding their feet and fully participating in University life and in the wider world of work.

Gillian McGregor — SportsGillian McGregor is a lecturer in the Geography Department. She completed her BA Honours and MSc at Rhodes. Her primary research fields include fuvial geomorphology, impact of impoundments on rivers systems, developing methods for water resource management through GIS. She is extensively involved in Rhodes Sport, specifically underwater hockey.

Stephen Penney — SportsStephen Penney is the Sport and Motor-ing reporter for Grocott’s Mail, as well as chief photographer. Penney was the 2005 recipient of the Sanlam Community Press Photographer of the Year award, and has a keen interest in sports photography. He is also an avid runner and has completed the Two Oceans Marathon, among others.

Roger Adams — SportsRoger Adams is the current Deputy Dean of Students and former head of Rho-des sport. In his tenure, Rhodes sport enjoyed a considerable shake up, with the improvement of the Inter Res sports programme, and of the various sports societies at Rhodes. Outside the office, the father of two enjoys cycling and playing golf.

Mandla Gagayi — SportsMandla Gagayi is the head of sports at Rhodes University. He was also the recipient of the 2010 Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Community Engagement award, which he received for his work es-tablishing the Grahamstown High Schools Soccer League.

Corinne Cooper — Arts, Culture and MediaCorinne Cooper is a Sound Technology lecturer at Rhodes University and owns a recording studio. She is actively involved in Grahamstown’s music industry, serving as a judge for Live Music Society’s Battle of the Bands.

Viren Raja has been actively involved in campus life since his first year when he was elected onto the HSS execu-tive, staying on to become the vice president the following year. He has participated in various Moot Competi-tions, finishing second in the country in the Kovsie Moot Competition and representing Rhodes at the All Africa Moot. He has also tutored and served as sub-warden for two years.

Tamryn-Leigh Dickenson has been the chairperson of the Live Music Society for the past three years. She has worked as a tutor for Marketing Management 3, and served as class representative for the Management Honours class. As Chairperson of LMS she has organised various events and has collaborated with environmental and community engagement organisa-tions to set up performances.

Set to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree, Morolong’s track record with community engagement and aware-ness campaigns has been impressive, having been a SHARC peer educator since 2009 as well as a workshop facili-tator for SHARC, Women’s Week and Constitution Week. Morolong has also been a Rhodes University Wellness Leader, sub-warden of Lilian Britten House and a tutor in the psychology department for the last three years.

Michael James is a third year student majoring in English and Philosophy. He was a founding member, secretary and later Chairperson of the Babilanto society. He has also held the position of Chairperson in the Chinese Society, as well as having served on the com-mittee for the Student Christian Fel-lowship Society. James is a sub-warden in Cullen Bowles House and also acted as the IT representative for his house committee.

Fadzai Eunice Munedzimwe is com-pleting her degree in Pharmacy. She is currently the president of the South African Pharmaceutical Students’ As-sociation, of which she was previously the general secretary. She is as an ac-tive member of the Rhodes University Pharmacy Students’ Association, where she has also served as president and vice-president. She worked as a demonstrator for Pharmaceutical Chemistry 2 and as a mentor for first year Pharmacy students.

This qualified personal trainer has represented Rhodes in squash, cricket, pool and mixed martial arts and has been sports representative for De Beers House as well as De Beers sportsman of the year in 2010. His physical prowess is matched only by his involvement in the community: he has been the project leader for the Health Suite and Upstart com-munity engagement project, and has run weekly aerobic sessions at Fort England Hospital.

Anele Msayi is doing his Honours in Information Systems. In addition to his maintaining a high standard in his academics, he has been a tutor for four years. He also mentored for two years in the Extended Studies Programme. Msayi has been involved in the Na-tional Youth Service Student Volunteer Programme, teaching high school mathematics. He is also involved in the Information Systems outreach initiative Ulwazi.

Tiffany Brown is in her third year, majoring in Psychology, Anthropology and Classical Civilizations. She has been a dedicated member of the Rho-des University Chamber Choir for four years and served as the public relations officer in 2011. She was the head stu-dent of Victoria Mxenge House and is currently employed as the sub-warden of the residence. Brown was one of eight students awarded the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship this year.

With a Bachelor of Science Honours degree and a Bachelor of Science degree with distinction, Crymble’s academic achievements have seen her on the Dean’s List for academic excel-lence, with Academic Half colours. A student lecturer for HKE, she has represented Zimbabwe for tennis and hockey, and has been a volunteer at the SPCA for the last two years. She also spearheaded a drive for donations to help victims of a digs fire this year.

Masters student Tina Dreier is the captain and a member of the Rhodes Women 1st team soccer. She is also a member PEFA District Team. She has worked as a tutor for German Studies 3, as head student of Celeste house and as a student assistant at both the Inter-national Library of African Music and Rhodes library. Dreier is also the only female member of the Rhodes Internal Soccer and Futsal Leagues.

Precious Garayi is currently in her first year of her Master’s degree in Social Science. In 2011 she was named as one of Rhodes University’s Top 100 students and received the General Excellence Leadership Award. In ad-dition, she has been the president of the Rhodes Toastmasters Society, SRC Chair Committee member and the Rhodes representative at the SASA Conference. In 2012 Precious was also the Eastern Province Country Districts Hockey representative.

Fabio De Dominicis is in his third year studying Journalism. He has worked at The Oppidan Press as sports editor and sub-editor. He has also worked as sub-editor for the Rhodes Sports Me-dia Centre and as a tutor for Journal-ism and Media Studies 1. In addition to being a sub-warden of De Beers Residence for both 2011 and 2012, he has worked as Weights Facility Floor Instructor at the Rhodes Health Suite.

Nomlando Lukuleni is in her fourth year of Business Science. She is the chairperson of the Rhodes Netball Club and captain of the 1st team. She has played netball provincially for the Cacadu Seniors and served as development officer on the Rhodes Sports Council. Lukuleni was the head student and mentoring representative in her house. She has also tutored in Management.

Caley Chaplin is both a member of the Golden Key society and has been placed on the Dean’s List for academic merit. In 2011 she obtained a distinc-tion in her Honours degree in Human Kinetics and Ergonomics. She was awarded the Henderson Prestigious Scholarship in both 2011 and 2012. In addition to her academic achievement Caley was both the 2012 secretary for the Rhodes Canoe Club and an Op-pidan sub-warden.

Victoria Gross is current study-ing towards her Honours degree in organisational psychology. She has held numerous leadership positions throughout her time at Rhodes, in-cluding sub-warden of Margaret Smith House in 2012, head student in 2011 and sport representative in 2012. In addition, during 2012 Gross played for the Eastern province Country District Hockey team and was awarded he most valuable hockey player award for her performance in the third team.

Julie Campbell is currently in her fourth year of Journalism and Media Studies specialising in television. In 2012 she was shortlisted for the Carte Blanche television scholarship. She is a member of Golden Key International Honours Society and was elected as the vice-chairperson of Inkwenkwezi society. In addition, Campbell tutors Journalism and Media studies first year students and was the 2012 dive planner for the Underwater Club.

Madiki Motsumi is currently in her final year of Law. In 2009 she was awarded Academic Half colours and was placed on the Dean’s Merit List. Her 2012 June results placed as in the top ten of final year law students and she was selected as one of two winners of the Golden Key Adams and Adams Law bursary. She was sub-warden at Walker House and a member of the Kimberley East Hall Committee in both 2011 and 2012.

Ruth Kruger is currently in her third year reading towards a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Environmental Science and Law. She fulfilled the role of SRC environmental councillor during 2012 and was also the vice-chairperson of RU Green. This year Kruger represented Rhodes at various UN conferences and sat on numer-ous society committees, including, Common Ground, GRASS Rootz and ROAR. This year Ruth was also the founding member of the community group Sibanye-One Voice.

Kabwela Chisaka is currently in her final year of LLB after having already completed her BSC and Honours degree in Biotechnology. During 2012 she was the Rhodes Law Society presi-dent as well as a student mentor in the Rhodes Law Clinic. Outside of Rhodes Chisaka was the national manager of the of SAASTA National Schools de-bating and national co-manager of The Finish Touch national, a programme commissioned by the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy.

Mmaphuti Morolong is an LLB penul-timate year student. She was a SHARC peer educator in 2012, as well as the logistics representative and workshop facilitator. Morolong has helped to facilitate workshops during Constitu-tion week and Women’s week. She was the sub-warden for Lillian Britten House in 2011. Morolong was on the Silent Protest Organising Committee in 2011. She is currently a tutor for Psychology 1, 2 and 3.

Winjie Siwale is currently in her third year reading towards a degree in Bcom Law and Economics. Siwale is the founder and president of the Zambian Society, a platform for Zambian stu-dents to express their culture. In addi-tion, she was the community engage-ment representative for the Botswana society in 2012. In 2011 Siwale was a member of the Golden Key Interna-tional Honours Society and was head student of Prince Alfred House.

Bantubonke Izwe Ntsabula is currently doing his Masters in Geology. He is currently a junior lecturer in the Geology Department. He was elected as the president of RocSoc for 2012 and is also an executive member of Rhodes University’s Societies Council. Ntsabula was also part of the De Beers House Committee and the Oakdene House Committee in the years 2010 and 2011 respectively. NRF this year awarded him the NRF Masters Prestig-ious and Equity Scholarship.

Jacek Kaminski is currently a third year Journalism and Media Studies student. He was awarded Academic Half Colours in 2011 and was placed on the Dean’s List for Academic Merit in both 2010 and 2011. In addition to his academic achievement Kaminski was the founder and chairperson of The Society of Music, Art and Drama Education (MADE) and has been ap-pointed the head sound engineer for 2013 after having fulfilled the role of tutor and postgraduate assistant.

Charlene Donald is a 3rd year student majoring in HKE and Organisational Psychology. This year she served as the chief marshal and co-ordinator during all three Silent Protest marches. In 2011 she was part of Ruth First’s house committee as the residence sports representative. She helped raise over R5500 when she organised and hosted the 2nd annual shavathon and cyclathon for CANSA and Hospice Grahamstown.

Qhawe Mhlongo is a third-year Bach-elor of Commerce Student, majoring in Accounting and Economics. During his time at Rhodes, he has been both the treasurer and sub-warden of Adamson House. He is currently on the committees of SIFE as the strategic finance director and the Roteract soci-ety where he hold the position of head of professional development. Mhlongo has also been a student driver for Get Home Safe.

Caroline Thompson is a third year student studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce and majoring in Informa-tion Systems and Economics. She has held numerous leadership positions during her time at Rhodes. These in-clude the Commerce Faculty’s student representative councillor, Golden Key’s community engagement officer, Kimberley East’s hall senior student. Thompson is the co-organiser of the Love Reading Club, aimed at assisting disadvantaged primary school scholarsat reading and speaking in both isiX-hosa and English.

Lihle Mancoba is a postgraduate student in International Studies. Man-coba was recently elected as the new chairperson of the Young Women’s Dialogue for 2012/2013. Prior to be-ing elected as the chairperson of the Young Women’s Dialogue she held the position of project co-ordinator for 2010 to 2012. She was house sub-warden for Dingemans House for two consecutive years and has also played the role of the environmental repre-sentative for the residence in 2010.

Chris Gornall was awarded full academic colours in 2012, as well as achieving a distinction in Ichthyology and Botany for his Bachelor of Science degree. As a result, he was placed on the Dean’s List and was invited to join the Golden Key Honours Society. Gornall was appointed as the Oppidan sub-warden in charge of the mentor-ship programme for 2012. He has been elected as the vice-chairperson for the Underwater Club for 2013.

Jacob Nwigwe is a fourth year phar-macy student. He is the First Aid Club Chairperson for this past year, where he established programmes with Dr Davies Optometrist, St John Ambu-lance and the Easten Cape Depart-ment of Health. He was also the First Aid Club duty coordinator in 2011. Nwigwe was the 2011 SRC academic Ccouncillor, whereby he helped to ap-peal for duly performed (DP) certifi-cate refusals, and appealed on behalf of students who had been excluded.

Ayeshah Fauzee is currently a PhD student in the Faulty of Pharmacy. She graduated with a Masters of Science in Pharmacy in 2011 after achieving a distinction. Her academic achievements were awarded with two scholarships which were presented to her by Rhodes University. Fauzee has recently been accepted as a member of the American Association of Phar-maceutical Science. In addition to her academic success, Fauzee has interned at Settlers Hospital and has assisted in the training of nurses.

Tsungai Makoni is in her third year majoring in Information Systems. She was the secretary of Rhodes University Melodies, and has tutored in Theory of Finance. She was a Statistics 1D tutor in 2011 as well as a and Management 1 tutor. Makoni is also the sub-warden of Prince Alfred House, a position to which she has been re-elected. She is also a wellness leader and peer coun-sellor. She also worked with SIFE as the in the position of project manager.

Khanya Mashalaba is an active par-ticipator in community engagement. She has served as SIFE vice-president in 2012 and the SIFE recruitment and public relations officer in 2010. She has also been involved in a number of other organisations including SHINE, an organisation which assists children with reading and homework, and Upstart. Mashalaba has also worked at Rhodes Music Radio and the Rhodes University Health Suite since 2010.

Martin Forsyth is currently in his third year majoring in both manage-ment and organisational psychology. He was the SRC media councillor for 2010/2011 and SRC vice-president Internal for 2011/2012. During his term in office as vice-president Inter-nal, Forsyth played an integral role in changing the Constitution of the Stu-dents. He was a SHARC peer educator in 2011, and took up two tutoring positions in the same year.

Working to attain her LLB, Lwandle-kazi Gaga received the DoS leadership award in 2010. She worked as The Oppidan Press managing editor and as a student supervisor in 2011. She is currently the law society treasurer and a mentor at the Rhodes University Law Clinic. Gaga is also a graduate of the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation. She has also been her law class’s representative for the past two years.

Daniel Baines is currently in his final year of LLB. He has been a member of the Rhodes Swimming team for the last four years. He was captain for two of these. Baines was voted Oppidan Sportsman of the year in 2010. He coached the Rhodes Women’s 4th team hockey in 2008 and 2009. Currently, he is a swimming coach at the Victoria Primary School. Baines was placed on the Dean’s List of Law students in 2010.

Travis Basson is doing his BSc Hon-ours in Biochemistry specialising in malaria cell biology. He has served as both the environmental representa-tive and senior student for Winchester House, and is currently a sub-warden for the residence. Basson also sat on the University Board of Residences and acted as the Biochemistry 2 class representative. He is the vice-chairman of the Biochemistry, Microbiology and Biotechnology society (BMBSoc).

Manosa Nthunya is in his final year, majoring in English and History. He has been the site launch manager of Galela Amanzi for two and a half years. He was a co-founder and the secretary general of Common Ground. He is still a member of the commit-tee. Nthunya was a wellness leader for two years. He is also a volunteer for Inkwenkwezi as well as a peer educa-tor for SHARC.

Silvanus Welcome graduated with a Bachelor of Social Science degree. He has held a number of leadership positions, including his term in office as the SRC vice-president external. In addition, Welcome has, during his time at Rhodes, played an extensive role as the SRC Oppidan councillor, Oppidan fundraising representative and Oppidan sport representative. He is also an active member of both the Rupsa society as well as the Student Christian Organisation.

Nyaradzai Matanyaire is currently a fourth-year pharmacy student. She is a member of Golden Key Interna-tional Honour Society and in 2009 she was on the Dean’s List based on her academic merit. She has been involved in mentoring on a social level, mentor-ing first year Oppidans to settle in and acclimatise to the pressures associ-ated with digs life, and on academic level, mentoring first year Pharmacy students to cope with the Rhodes cur-riculum.

Faith Makandigona is currently in the fourth year of her Pharmacy degree. She was on the Dean’s list for academic merit in 2009. She was invited to join the Golden Key International Honors society in 2010 and subsequently became its president in 2011. Ma-kandigona has also held mentorship and tutoring positions in her faculty. She has been appointed vacation and conference sub-warden on several oc-casions, lab assistant since 2011 and as a Get Home Safe driver.

Boipelo Bonokwane served on the SRC in 2011 as the community engagement councillor. In addition, her leadership positions have included being the head student of Lillian Brit-ten House, chairperson of Christians @ Rhodes and coordinator of the Pan African Youth Dialogue. She claims to be a passionate and hard-working individual who loves learning about people, and has a special place in her heart for community engagement.

Armand Swart is currently completing his joint Honours in Law and English Literature, after graduating with distinction in the first half of the year while on exchange at Leicester Univer-sity. He has served as both the Head of the HIV/Aids portfolio and the com-munity engagement officer for Legal Activism. Swart has also represented Rhodes in the Kovsies First Year Moot and was part of the winning team in the Centre for Child Law Moot.

Vimbainashe Chikukwa is doing her Masters in Sociology. She works as a sub-warden in the Gavin Reilly Post-graduate Village, as well as a Language mentor for Legal Theory 1 and as a tutor for Industrial Sociology 2. This year Chikukwa presented a paper at the South African Sociological Asso-ciation Conference. She is also a Clini-cal Legal Education graduate assistant for the Rhodes Law Clinic.

Cristy Lelean is currently in the final year of her LLB. In 2012 was placed on the Dean’s list for academic excellence. She was awarded the Shirley Ritchie Prize for the female LLB student with the highest aggregate and was given third place the final year moot com-petition. She has achieved ten firsts in her LLB thus far and has, for the last three years, tutored in both the Law and History Departments

Shana-Michelle Rabona is the treas-urer of the Rhodes Netball Club, an Information Systems 2 tutor, as well as the only female currently in the Computer Science 3 class. She is part of two local NGOs, Generation Active (GenX) and Grahamstown Youth Movement (GYM), which interact with and empower disadvantaged youth in Grahamstown. She is cur-rently in the process of helping to secure funding from a company for these NGOs.

Nada Kakaza is currently in the final year of her LLB. In 2011 she was both the SRC Hall representative for Kimberley Hall East, and the Rhodes University Chess vice-chairperson. Nada has assisted in coaching chess at Victoria Girls’ High School as part of the Rhodes Chess and she has been se-lected to represent Rhodes University at the LexisNexis Intervarsity Mock Trial Competition for 2012.

Lisa Maholo is a third year commerce student majoring in Information Systems and Management. She was appointed sub-warden for New House residence in 2011 and 2012. Maholo is the mentor for the Trojan Academic Initiative programme for the com-merce extended studies programme. She is the co-founder and deputy pub-lic relation office of Fantastic Society at Rhodes University, which aims at helping first years make the transition from high school into university.

Martin Blore is a third year Bachelor of Business Science student. He has been placed within the top 5, top 10 and top 20 for his Economics papers for first and second year. He has also been in the first team for rugby this year. He has been involved in com-munity engagement projects with his residence including entertaining and teaching children in the community and being involved with the SPCA.

Ramalohlanye is in the final year of her LLB. She holds a number of lead-ership positions including assistant prosecutor, sub-warden, student legal mentor (Law Clinic) and the deputy-chief adjudicator for Rhodes Debat-ing. In 2012 she was selected by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Organisation to represent South Africa at the South-ern Africa Regional Youth Forum in Namibia. She has also facilitated workshops in George and Queenstown for the Young Communicators Award (YCA)

Bithun Babu was awarded Academic Half-Colours in 2009 and was placed on the Dean’s list in 2010. He received recognition for being placed in the Top 10 for Economics in 2009 and was a Statistics tutor in 2010. He is also a member of the Golden Key Honours Society, and has been elected as the media representative for the society in 2013. Babu was elected as a class representative in 2010 and 2011.

Lindelwa Bolani is a third year Bachelor of Business Science student. She has an average of 89% for her third year economics modules and was awarded academic half colours in 2011. She has been selected to partici-pate in the People to People leadership programme and as one of 30 women in South Africa to attend the ABSA Capital pioneering conference. She is on the Golden Key Honours Society committee for 2013.

Kuzivakwashe Murigo has completed a Bachelor of Economics degree, where he attained a distinction in economics. He is currently working towards an Honours degree in FinancialManagement as he has a passion for getting involved in financial projects. Murigo aspires to become an invest-ment banker as well as a chartered financial analyst. He was the 2012 Rhodes Business Society chairman, and has been involved with the society since 2010.

Chidanyika Mary Nyasha is a fourth year pharmacy student who has been involved in leadership postions throughout her career. Such posi-tions include being part of the Trojan Academic Initiative, and has also been an IT and Food Representative for her residence and a local student and exchange officer. She has been a sub-warden at Ellen Kuzwayo Residence. She also participated in drafting poli-cies for the Desmond Tutu Hall, and attended the 57th annual conference for the SAPSF in Durban in 2010.

Musankhana Chirwa received the Gold Award for Academic Excellence after placing 3rd in Thomas Pringle residence in the June 2011 exams. She is a member of the Golden Key Honours Society, as well as one of nine people that achieved a distinction in Information Systems 301. As a result, she was offered to pursue an informa-tion systems Honours degree in 2013. Chirwa is the 2012 media councillor for the Rhodes Malawi Society.

Audrey Zvinavashe is currently study-ing towards her LLB degree. She is currently a sub-warden at Amina Cachalia residence, and part of the hall committee at Desmond Tutu Hall. Audrey has also been part of different committees throughout her Rhodes career, such as the Adinkra Child Mentorship Programme. She is a member of the Golden Key Honours Society and is serving on the Rhodes University Chapter.

Moedi Mafokwane is recognised as one of the 2011 top 15% in the Com-merce faculty and she is a member of the Golden Key Honours Society. She is passionate about entrepreneurship and innovation. Mafokwane had start-ed and owned a successful business at the age of 12 years old. She tutors Statistics 1D and Economics. She was the class representative Professional Communication 2 in first semester and in 2011 Commercial Law 2.

Thoko Sipungu is currently in his final year of LLB. During his time at Rhodes he has volunteered for the CSD and the Psychology clinic where he was in-volved in a programme to help autistic children with their schoolwork. He was the captain of the athletics’ club cross-country and the Oakdene House Secretary in 2012. He has also worked at the library as a student navigator and a student assistant.

McDougall is doing her Honours in Politics and International Studies. She has been committed to community engagement and environmentalism at Rhodes throughout her studies. She was the secretary and vice-chair of Galela Amanzi and is now the chair-person of the organisation. In 2012 she was involved in organising Rhodes Environmental and World Water Week and events during Community En-gagement Week. This year she has also volunteered for Inkwenkwenzi.

Dean Johnston is a first team hockey and cricket player for Rhodes Univer-sity. In addition, he has also coached at The Diocesan School for Girls, St. Andrews College and for the Rhodes University 2nd Team Men’s Hockey Side. Dean has also held a number of leadership positions including Captain of the 2nd Team Mens’ Hockey side and has been elected as chairman of the Hockey Club and treasurer for the Cricket Club for 2013.

A lover of meeting and interacting with new people, Thabo Seshoka has been embedded in community engagement since his first year. He served as SRC community engagement councillor for 2012, a role to which he has been re-elected. This role required active participation in initiatives such as the Give 5 project. He is also a stu-dent volunteer, tutoring Grahamstown schoolchildren, as well as a member of Kimberly East Community engage-ment committee.

During his five years at Rhodes, Justin Sloane has represented the university through Rhodes Rugby in the u/21 A and First teams in 2007 and 2008. He was awarded a Sportsman of the Year award in Kimberly Hall for both years. Justin was the Sports representative of Cullen Bowles in 2008 before becom-ing touch rugby coach in 2009 and 2010. His most recent achievement is taking the reigns as coach for the u/21 A rugby team.

Mlamuli Hlatshwayo is currently the Student Leader at the Rhodes University Community Engagement Office. In 2011 Hlatshwayo was Chris Hani community engagement repre-sentative and was presented with the award for the most engaged student. Throughout the year he has played an active role in tutoring Matrics at local Grahamstown schools. In addition to his Community Engagement efforts, Hlatshwayo has been a member of Voice of Glory for the last four years.

Nobulele Phuza is a passionate sports-woman with keen interests in netball and basketball. Since coming to Rho-des she has worn Cacadu and Eastern Cape Colours for both basketball and netball. She is part of the National Under 21 netball Squad, and is cur-rently in preparation for the World Youth Netball Championships in 2013. In December, she will be participating in the Zone Six Games being held in Zambia.

Jocelyn Coldrey is currently doing her Honours in Politics. She has been the chairperson of the Masincedane Society for two years running and was awarded the Olive Schreiner House Award for commitment. In addition, Coldrey was the first person to be pre-sented with a certificate of apprecia-tion by the Salvation Army for her ac-tive role in the soup kitchen. Coldrey has also been involved in organisationssuch as Grass, Inkwenkwezi, SEA-CC sf and Masihule project.

Simon Pheasant is currently in his third year of Human Kinetics and Ergonomics and Geography. He was the Eastern Province Open Men’s swimming captain for the 2011/2012 season, and also has been part of the Eastern Province swimming team. He represented Eastern Province in the South African Senior National Cham-pionships for the third consecutive year. He competed in the University Underwater Hockey national club tournament in East London earlier this year.

Khangelani Dziba is a third year Journalism and Media Studies Design student that has shown diversity in all aspects of the field. In 2011 he was awarded the Best News Anchor Award at Rhodes Music Radio. He has also held the position of Rhodes Music Radio Marketing and public rela-tions manager as well as a number of other positions including senior news anchor, reporter and Breakfast and Drive-by co-host at RMR.

Daniella is currently a fourth year Journalism and Media Studies student. She has been an active member of the Inkwenkwezi society since her first year. Since joining the society she fulfilled the role of treasurer before be-coming the chairperson of the society in 2012. After completing her degree Daniella hopes to combine what she has learnt both academically and dur-ing her time Inkwenwezi to work for as a media officer at an educational NGO.

Bradley Bense is a 3rd year Journal-ism student majoring in Political and International Studies. He was the 2011 SRC media councillor, and has worked with local student organisation Upstart through developmental television journalism. Bense has produced media for the SRC,organised the 2012 Inter-Varsity afterparty and started a media team for the council. Bense is the incoming 2013 SRC vice-president.

The following students have been recognised by Profes-sor Jonathan Campbell, Dean of the Rhodes Law Faculty, for their outstand-ing performance in their studies this year.

The Academic Excellence Award is awarded to candidates who are top achievers in their faculty. Deans of each faculty nominate four candidates who received the highest marks in their respective faculties.

Commerce

The following candidates were chosen for their aca-demic excellence through-out the year by Dean of the Commerce faculty Profes-sor David Sewry for their setting a standard of excel-lence in their respective departments.

Humanities

Professor Fred Hendricks, Dean of the Humanities Faculty, has selected the candidates below as the top first-year achievers in the June examinations. They have been recognised for their outstanding promise.

Dean of Science Faculty Professor Ric Bernard, and Deputy Dean Professor Makaiko Chitambo selected the following candidates for the Investec Rhodes Top 100 Academic Excellence Award. Each was chosen for his/her outstanding perfor-mance this year.
