Greetings Friends!

Summer is upon us and for St. Louisans that means three

things: heat, humidity and fantastic art opportunities!

The Arts and Education Council (A&E) supports many wonder-

ful arts organizations that offer outstanding summer programs

that either embrace the summer weather or offer an escape from

it. We highlighted many of those in our last issue; but I’ll remind

you to grab your hat, water and check out artist Gigi Scaria’s

ground-breaking (literally) exhibit at Laumeier Sculpture Park (running through

August 14) or tap your feet and sing along to exciting new musical productions by

STAGES St. Louis in their (air conditioned!) theaters. Performance venues like Jazz

at the Bistro and the Sheldon Concert Hall have full schedules through July and

August. And even though Shakespeare Festival St. Louis performances in Forest

Park have come to a close, the Festival actors read “Coriolanus” and “The War of

the Roses” at Left Bank Books in July and August.

I encourage you to visit A&E’s Know & Go Calendar (KeepArtHappening.org/

calendar) often for the latest in arts activities that you and your family can enjoy

this summer. And remember to use your ARTS Card for added discounts and spe-

cial opportunities! Don’t have an ARTS Card?! You can change that by making a

contribution of $50 - or more - by clicking the “Give Today” button on A&E’s

KeepArtHappening.com home page. Your charitable support helps keep our

region’s arts and culture organizations thriving and continuing to make our city a

wonderful place in which to live.

To see all the ways in which your support has made a positive difference in our

community, we have included our 2015 Report to the Community beginning on

page 11. This report demonstrates how your precious and personal contributions

make a difference in the lives of millions of children and adults impacted by the

hundreds of amazing performances, educational activities, outreach programs and

exhibits presented by A&E grantees and partners.

As a contributor to A&E, you can take pride in knowing that your generosity

has played a role in our community’s continued artistic and cultural growth. For

that, we thank and applaud you!

Sincerely,

Cynthia A. Prost

A couple decades ago, the future

looked pretty bleak for Noah

Vasquez. As a teenager he had

dropped out of high school, gotten

involved with gangs and was intermit-

tently homeless.

“Those were hell years. I don’t think I

even understood how poor I was,” says

Vasquez.

At 15, life began to change. At his

brother’s urging, Vasquez went to live

at a youth home in Chicago’s Humboldt

Park, where an inner-city ministry

helped him begin to make changes.

Eventually, he got his GED and went on

to serve in the Air Force for six years,

then spent three years as a Department

of Defense contracting officer. He found

his way to college, and, in time,

received his MBA.

Helping to inspire him along the way,

he says, were the arts.

“At the youth home, the church put

on street-corner plays, and these

pop-up dramas were a way of commu-

nicating the outcome of gang violence

and how faith was a way to positively

express oneself,” said

Vasquez. We would help

these young people make

the connection that a per-

son being shot by a gang

member could be their

father or brother or

grandfather.”

Vasquez, now 35, is

president and CEO of

Competitive Range

Solutions LLC, a multi-mil-

lion dollar St. Louis com-

pany that provides technical and

non-technical mission support and ser-

vices to customers including the Air

Force, Army, Navy, U.S. Transportation

Command, Federal Aviation Admin-

istration and the Federal

Communications Commission.

Vasquez is also president of A&E’s

new Young Friends of the Arts (YFA)

auxiliary group. He was drawn to lead

YFA because of his experiences at the

youth home.

“As a young person, being involved

in those plays was a huge release. It

YOUNG FRIENDS OF THE ARTS: Noah Vasquez, Young Friends of the Arts President

was how I got rid of my negative

energy,” he says. “It really got me on a

positive track.”

He regularly speaks at St. Louis

schools and tell his story

about growing up home-

less and as a gang mem-

ber; and how he turned

his life around. He notes

that in some of the young

people he meets he sees

his younger self.

“The things that

plagued me back then

nearly destroyed me,” he

says. “Many of those same

things are still facing young people

today. I believe that many young people

are ill-equipped to deal with disappoint-

ment. They don’t feel any worth.

“The arts are a way to provide an

outlet to allow them to express their

creativity, be it through rap, or writing

poetry, or performing. It’s a way to help

them validate themselves and see they

have something meaningful to contrib-

ute.”

Vasquez also believes that St. Louis

needs young professionals like himself

to “step up and drive change and create

an environment where we can attract

successful, ambitious young people [to

the St. Louis community].”

“The arts are so important to our city

because they provide an enriching life-

style,” he continues. “I certainly think a

vibrant, diverse arts scene is one of the

reasons people choose to live in St.

Louis. A fully formed life isn’t all about

work. There have to be other outlets,

and the arts are a real joy.”

Arts, visit KeepArtHappening.org/YFA. For

“They helped me at a

time when I was hurting

and had nothing. Today

the arts are some of the

most beautiful moments

I share with my wife,

whether it’s when we

hear music or experi-

ence a play. It’s an

accent to our lives.”

- Noah Vasquez

Young Friends of the Arts

(YFA) is an auxiliary group of

the Arts and Education

Council, launched in the

Spring of 2016. YFA is made

up of young professionals

who believe in the importance

of the arts in our community

and work to create awareness

two outstanding interns drawn from

that pool, contributing their talents and

knowledge to the organization.

Aynsley Hensgen has been with A&E

since September 2015 as a marketing

intern, assisting with Happenings, social

media, press releases and the website.

She is a Saint Louis University student,

soon to start her senior year studying

Business Administration with a concen-

tration in marketing and a minor in psy-

chology. Aynsley intends to work at a

marketing or advertising firm after col-

lege, but chose to intern at A&E

because of her love of the arts.

“My experience here has given me a

whole new perspective on this city and

has increased my interest in the arts

significantly,” she says. “Also, through

my work with The Makers photo series I

have had the opportunity to meet a

number of truly inspirational people

that make St. Louis the thriving arts

community that it is.”

Angela Moore-Williams began her

grant administration internship at A&E

in May. She is a graduate student at the

University of Missouri-St. Louis pursuing

a masters degree in Public Policy

Administration with a certificate in

Nonprofit Management and Leadership.

Angela has a Bachelor of Fine Arts and

explores social and gender injustices

through her own artistic work.

A&E’s efforts in creating connections

and opportunities for artists and art

educators drew Angela to the organiza-

Phoebe Dent Weil

Major Contributor to the Arts

Priscilla Block

Outstanding Arts Professional

Denise Thimes

Outstanding Working Artist

Stacy West

Outstanding Teaching Artist

Sabina England

Sarah Burke and Kim Eberlein,

Visionary Awards planning committe

co-chairs, kicked off the evening by

welcoming Karin Bliznik, principal trum-

pet for the St. Louis Symphony, for the

opening performance. Alicia Graf Mack,

former principal dancer of Alvin Ailey

American Dance Theater and cofounder

of D(n)A Arts, performed later in the

evening, and the two took the stage

together for a final piece to close the

ceremony.

Cynthia Prost, A&E president and

CEO, co-hosted the event with

Monsanto Fund President Deborah

Patterson, introducing each of the

remarkable honorees. Acceptance

speeches highlighted similar themes:

the landscape of possibility in the city’s

art scene; the many obstacles that can

so easily discourage innovation and

drive; and the immense value of pas-

sionate teachers and supportive com-

munities for those just beginning to find

their paths.

The event was first established in

2003 by Grand Center, Inc., and after a

year hiatus it was relaunched in 2015 by

an independent committee of women

with A&E as fiscal sponsor. To date,

over 80 women working in or support-

ing the arts in St. Louis have been hon-

ored.

Three years ago DeWayne Trainer

and his now-husband, Mark Pye,

moved to St. Louis from Atlanta

and fell in love with the area’s vibrant

arts scene. Trainer and his husband

both work for Edward Jones, and sup-

port A&E through the Edward Jones

Workplace Giving Campaign, but their

connection to the arts in St. Louis

doesn’t end there. Trainer is a tenor

with the St. Louis Symphony Chorus

and Mark is an accomplished oboist.

Recently, Happenings caught up with

Trainer, 45, to discuss acclimating to

St. Louis, his support for the arts, and

his love of singing.

What is your involvement with A&E?

I am a donor to the Annual Workplace

Giving Campaign every year. Mark and I

went to one of the VIP kickoff events. It

actually was the very first event I

attended on the Edward Jones campus

before I worked here. We understand

the importance of the arts and music.

The arts gave both of us a place to

belong when we didn’t belong doing

the normal kind of ‘guy’ stuff like

sports. It gave us something we were

good at as well as a way to make

friends and have a community here.

Why is it important to support the

arts in St. Louis?

Given the funding decreases so many

arts groups have seen in the past sev-

eral years as well as the loss of grant

money, it’s important to give to help

build a new generation of artists for

tomorrow. Also, with all the social

unrest in St. Louis, it’s vital to give kids

an outlet – a place for them find their

voice – so that they can tell their stories

and find what they are passionate

about. It’s gratifying to know that by

giving to A&E, I’m a part of that and

that Edward Jones is a part of that.

Pursuing the arts is expensive - often

there are lessons involved, equipment,

transportation and other costs. By sup-

porting the arts, we are helping lift that

burden and giving so many young peo-

ple - who don’t have the money or the

support - a great opportunity. We are

investing in our arts future.

What kind of training did you receive

as a singer?

I had always been a visual artist. I

wanted to be an illustrator for children’s

books. As I got older, we had a great

youth group in our church so I started

singing with them and people started

to notice my voice. In high school, I

started singing with the chorus and

doing musical theater. My chorus

teacher said, ‘You have something spe-

cial, you need to start thinking about

this seriously.’ So I began studying with

a voice teacher. When I applied to col-

lege, I had my art portfolio in one arm

and my music satchel in the other. I

wound up getting all the scholarship

money in music so I went in that direc-

tion. I have a bachelor’s and master’s

degree in vocal performance.

Where do you perform in St. Louis?

I sing with the St. Louis Symphony

Chorus and have performed with the

Bach Society as well occasionally the

St. Louis Chamber Chorus. I also sing

with our church.

What’s your idea of a perfect evening

in St. Louis?

Mark and I have discovered the city

through its restaurants. My favorite is I

Fratellini. So I guess my idea of a great

night out would be dinner there and

then going to the Symphony to hear

soprano Christine Brewer perform

Strauss.

Symphony Chorus, visit stlsymphony.org. For

From the Board Chair and PresidentDear Friends:

The Arts and Education Council was founded many,

many years ago with the purpose to support a handful

of existing iconic arts organizations. But A&E’s pri-

mary goal in the early 1960s was to provide critical startup

funding for arts organizations yet-to-be.

Over the past 50+ years, generous contributions to A&E

from loyal patrons like you has helped arts organizations

push their collective imaginations to dream and create bigger

productions or exhibits, innovative arts education programs

and more diverse outreach efforts.

Your belief in the arts’ power to transform our community

and to distinguish St. Louis as a desirable and dynamic place

in which to live, learn, work and play has been realized. In

2015, St. Louis ranked #17 out of 900 major metropolitan U.S.

cities for cultural vibrancy in the National Center for Arts

Research “Arts Vibrancy Index.” St. Louis’s concentration of

arts organizations, our statistically high number of arts

patrons per capita, the unbelievable generosity of our arts

philanthropists and the investment of our state and local

governments in the arts set St. Louis apart from more than

880 other cities. And, we’re pleased to report that St. Louis’s

stature in arts and culture vibrancy only increased in 2016 –

with our city rising four places to #13 in the second Arts

Vibrancy Index.

One area in which A&E remains laser-focused is ensuring

the arts remain a vital component of our youth’s education

experiences. Studies continue to confirm the benefits of par-

ticipation and access to the arts in academic achievement,

school attendance rates, standardized test scores, college

admission and retention rates, and more. Involvement in the

arts also teaches valuable work and life skills such as confi-

dence, public speaking, discipline and focus. As such, A&E

continues to expect grantees receiving your generous sup-

port to maintain robust arts education and outreach pro-

grams that provide positive outlets, experiences and encour-

agement to thousands of young people each year.

Thank you for supporting and valuing the importance of

the arts in your life and our region. It is your vision and dedi-

cation to the arts that fuels A&E’s mission to create a vibrant

community for all. When the arts thrive, our city thrives!

Thanks to you, our donor, the Arts and Education Council has raised and invested more than $100 million in nonprofit

arts and arts education organizations in the Greater St. Louis area since 1963. Unique collaborations with corporate

leaders, like the PNC Foundation, Maritz, the Monsanto Fund and Wells Fargo Advisors, also make it possible for

A&E to reach classrooms, communities and underserved populations that might not otherwise have access to the arts.

When the arts thrive, our city thrives!

The Arts and Education Council serves the communities in which our donors live. That’s why A&E’s grant programs

fund everything from art education programs in inner-city schools to theatre and visual art events for those living in

rural communities surrounding St. Louis. A&E understands that our donors are as diverse as the arts themselves,

and our wide range of funding approaches reflect the myriad values of our community.

Sustaining & Operating GrantsThe Arts and Education Council offers annual unrestricted

operating support to cornerstone arts institutions to help

strengthen infrastructure, build sustainability and expand

programming. Through this core support A&E has assisted in

growing many of our city’s distinguished arts organizations.

Fiscal SponsorshipAs a fiscal sponsor, the Arts and Education Council mentors

and guides arts startups through the early stages of prepar-

ing for and obtaining their nonprofit status.

Visionary Awards

The Arts and Education Council was part of an effort to

revive the Saint Louis Visionary Awards in 2015, celebrating

the contributions and achievements of women working in or

supporting the arts in St. Louis. Highlights from the 2016

Saint Louis Visionary Awards can be found on page 9.

Tennessee Williams Festival

The Arts and Education Council acted as fiscal sponsor for

the inaugural year of the Tennessee Williams Festival, honor-

ing the art and influence of playwright Tennessee Williams,

which was held in May 2016. The Festival featured a series of

plays, readings and discussions.

Arts Leadership and Management AcademyThe Arts Leadership and Management Academy (ALMA) is a

collaboration with the Nonprofit Services Center and gener-

ously funded by Wells Fargo Advisors. ALMA enhances the

skills and effectiveness of St. Louis arts and cultural organiza-

tions through participation in a strengths-based approach to

capacity building and leadership, providing

training and support through a series of

affordable management

workshops.

ALMA is also home to the Executive

Director’s Roundtable, a professionally-led program for executive directors of arts and cultural organizations providing support through peer exchanges and resource shar-ing during professionally-facilitated meetings. Research has proven this “peer learning clus-ter” is a highly eective method of training for nonprofits.

Arts MarketersArts Marketers is a meeting

series that offer training and

guidance for marketing non-

profit professionals from local

marketing experts and advertis-

ing agencies. Topics include

social media and digital market-

ing, public relations, search

engine optimization, branding,

copywriting and more. This

gathering provides actionable

and cost effective solutions in a

collaborative environment for

arts organizations and nonprof-

its.

The Arts and Education Council began as a funder for arts startups - startups that have grown into St. Louis icons,

like Opera Theatre and COCA. Over 50 years later, A&E supports arts organizations in even more ways: professional

development programs, fiscal sponsorships and below-market office and event spaces so arts organizations can

focus their resources where they’re most needed.

“It is impossible for me to say

just how much the affordable

space at the Centene Center has

helped YoungLiars Theatre in

our earliest stages of develop-

ment ... There is simply nothing

like the Centene Center any-

where else in St. Louis (or the

rest of the country from my

experience) in terms of helping

fledgling arts organizations find

the footing they need to not

only launch, but to do their very

best work.”

-Chuck Harper,

YoungLiars

“I find A&E’s free Arts

Marketers events to be an

invaluable resource. The

meetings and events provide

welcome opportunities for

me to broaden my knowl-

edge and resource base

while connecting with my

colleagues at other arts orga-

nizations. It’s helpful to have

a platform for discussion

about the challenges we face

as arts marketers AND the

creative solutions we find

along the way.”
