Ashoka Arab WorldAshoka is a global non-profit organization established in 1981 by Bill Drayton, a former McKinsey consultant. Like the business sector, we feel that the most effective way to sustainable social change lies with the social sector’s top entrepreneurs - men and women that recognize a social problem and use entrepreneurial principles to create a venture to leverage social change. Today, Ashoka is the largest association of social entrepreneurs in the world, supporting over 2600 visionary social changemakers, elected as Ashoka Fellows, to create maximum impact in their societies.

Ashoka established its Arab World Regional Office in 2003 to seek out and support innovative solutions to address significant, complex challenges in the region. Although social entrepreneurship is a concept that is still very new, Ashoka Arab World has been very effective in spreading this idea and has elected more than 40 Fellows to date.

With some of the world’s highest unemployment, illiteracy, gender discrimination and youth dissatisfaction rates, social entrepreneurship is becoming increasingly important in improving social conditions in the region and Ashoka stands at the cutting edge, driving that change with over 27 years of experience in searching for and selecting social entrepreneurs.

Investing in social entrepreneursPromoting sustainable social changePositively impacting thousands of lives

“Social entrepreneurship can be as infectious and impactful to the world’s most daunting social issues in the next few years as IT and Internet entrepreneurship have been the world’s economy in the past decades.”

Why Social Entrepreneurship, and why Now?Despite the large sums of money that have been invested in development by governments, civil society and philanthropists in recent history, traditional charity efforts and project-based development initiatives have not created lasting impact on our era’s most daunting challenges. In a time of economic disarray, local-led cutting-edge initiatives have risen to the fore as the most sensible method to ensure lasting patterns of social change.

Social entrepreneurs hold the key to creating effective wide-scale impact. Why? They are committed individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems, using entrepreneurial principles to leverage social change. Social entrepreneurs are leaders in their field, think outside the box, act as role-models for the surrounding community and ultimately inspire others to adopt and spread their innovations.

“The core psychology of a social entrepreneur is someone who cannot come to rest, in a very deep sense, until he or she has changed the pattern in an area of social concern all across society.”Bill Drayton, Ashoka Founder
