The Convenience Of Combined Inverter & Charger Power

Combi Inverter/Chargers

By combining inverter & charger functions plus automatic switching, a combi simplifies installation and cabling while saving considerable weight and cost.

When 230V mains power is available, the Combi will charge your battery bank with a powerful 4 stage smart battery charge (see page 64 for charger details). At the same time, 230V AC power is switched through the unit to feed your onboard appliances. As soon as power is removed, the combi automatically switches to inverter mode. This happens quickly enough to keep the clocks on microwaves and even most computers up and running (rather like a UPS system). See page 60 for inverter details.

Merlin’s Combi Inverter/Chargers provide a pure Sinewave AC output which is better regulated than normal grid power. This translates into interference free operation of audio visual equipment and cool running of devices that contain electric motors (washers, tools and microwaves).

AC System ConsiderationsIt’s worth considering the AC system implications of fitting a combi inverter/charger. For example, there may be certain loads that are not suitable for inverter use (eg air-conditioning or an immersion heater). Merlin provides a number of solutions – the most popular is shown below. See page 106 for our full range of consumer units.

The above system works as follows: AC shorepower is fed to a 16 amp 30mA RCD (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) for earth leakage protection. This in turn feeds three separate circuit breakers – one each for the immersion heater, air-conditioning and input to the combi inverter/charger. The feeds to these are shown by blue lines and are powered up only when the vehicle/boat is hooked up to 230V mains. The Combi will automatically switch between external AC power and it’s own internal inverter. The output from the Combi is then run to a second 16A 30mA RCD which in turn feeds the vehicle/boat’s ring main or main AC distribution panel. When external mains is available, the Combi acts as a charger and feeds the external power through to the AC ringmain/panel (at the same time, the shorepower only loads are also active). When shorepower is disconnected, the shorepower only loads will not operate, while those connected through the red lines will (from inverter). This system is totally automatic and requires no intervention by the user.

The Merlin range of AbSo Combi Inverter/Chargers combines the benefits of a Sinewave Inverter and a 4 Stage Battery Charger. Fully automatic in operation, AbSo inverter/chargers are easier to use, install and are significantly more cost effective than inverter and charger ‘separates’.

Pure Sinewave Output – ensures interference free operation with all electrical appliances.

4 Stage Smart Battery Charger – By combining an inverter and a charger you are not compromising quality of battery charge. The charger within AbSo units is based on the same technology as the AbSo stand-alone units.

Fast Transfer Switch – switching between inverter and external AC power takes less than 30 milliseconds. This is fast enough to keep most PC’s alive and clocks on microwaves or audio visual equipment operating. The transfer between external AC power and inverter power is automatic or can be controlled manually using the unit’s front control panel. The transfer switch is rated for systems up to 30 amps AC (7kW).

Built In Control Panel – built in to the front of the unit to allow set up, monitoring and control. Displays battery voltage and output wattage when in use. The control panel is detachable so it may be mounted anywhere on board. Supplied with a 25' (7.5m) extension cable.

Programmable Features – Idle mode sends the inverter to sleep and automatically awakens it when a load is sensed to reduce zero load current draw. Programmable battery type and charging voltage settings (suitable for all lead/acid, gel and AGM cells). Settable over and under voltage alarms. Maximum shore power limit setting – limits the amount of power the battery charger will pull from external AC sources (useful for when plugged in to limited mains supplies).

Inverter/Chargers have one main input and output. Therefore, if you require battery charging of multiple battery banks you will need to consider split charging options. If you have a battery combiner system (Eg SmartBank, Merlin VSR or PowerBank), these will handle all charge sources (including the inverter/charger) – see page 24 for an explanation. However, if you do not have this style of charge management system, we recommend using a Slave Charger (call Merlin for details).

Multiple Battery Combiner Systems can be used so that your combi inverter/charger can work with any number of independent battery banks.
