Opening timesOpen from 25th March to 31st October between 10am – 5.45pm. Last admission 5pm. Tours of the Private Apartments including the Broughshane Paintings are from 22nd April – 11th May by arrangement only. Car parking for the Castle & Garden is free, with a £2 charge for walks visitors, redeemable in the Shop & Tearoom.

The Castle gardens and grounds extend to 16 acres, including two acres of formal lawns and flowerbeds and 180 hectares of park and woodland – one of the most important designed landscapes in Scotland. Alive with bluebells and daffodils in spring, a riot of rhododendrons and azaleas in early summer, and a mellow tapestry of tones in late summer and autumn, the gardens at Inveraray are a must-see at any time of the year.

Tea Room & Gift ShopTake time out to visit our traditional tea room, run personally by the Duchess. The mouth-watering menu uses the best of local and Scottish ingredients, including Mull cheddars and Arran ice creams, while our soups, quiches and scones are made daily in the Castle and the cakes and traybakes are made on the Estate. And don’t miss the charming Castle gift shop, which offers a vast array of quality gifts and books, many with a Scottish and Clan Campbell association.

There has been a castle on the shores of Loch Fyne since the 1400s, although the present Inveraray Castle wasn’t built until the late 18th century. Inspired by a sketch by Vanbrugh, the architect of Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, it is baroque, Palladian and gothic in style, and was architecturally ahead of its time. A fire in 1877 resulted in the addition of the third floor and the conical roofs on the corner turrets – creating the familiar ‘fairytale’ castle we see today.

Inveraray Castle is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Argyll and the seat of the Clan Campbell. The Campbells arrived in Argyll as part of a royal expedition c.1220 and settled in Lochaweside, where their Chief, Colin Mor Campbell (‘Colin the Great’) was placed in charge of the King’s lands in the area. His name, ‘MacCailean Mor’ is still used by the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell, today.

A tour of the Castle provides a glimpse of the Clan heritage and the part played by the Duke of Argyll’s ancestors through generations of Scottish and British history. To the Duke and Duchess, however, the Castle is first and foremost a family house. They and their three children look forward to welcoming you in sharing the magic and magnificence of this wonderful place they are proud and privileged to call home.
