Introduction

The Inventory of Major Alberta Projects is produced by Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education to assist firms in identifying potential supply opportunities.

The Inventory lists construction projects in Alberta valued at $5 million or greater that are planned, underway or have recently been completed. The report also identifies projects that have been put on hold or deferred. Project data is obtained from public and private information sources. Where possible, this data has been verified with the project proponent/developer; however, users of the Inventory may wish to confirm project data with the proponent/developer.

While efforts have been made to obtain the most recent information, it should be noted that projects are being constantly re-evaluated by industry. Although the Inventory attempts to be as comprehensive as possible, some information may not be available at the time of printing, or not published due to reasons of confidentiality.

Highlights of the June 2012 Inventory of Major Alberta Projects Report

In June 2012 the value of the Inventory of Major Alberta Projects was $193.5 billion, up from $188.2 billion in June 2011. The current Inventory is comprised of 874 projects. The sector with the largest number of projects is Infrastructure with 292, valued at nearly $19.7 billion. The second largest sector is institutional with 125 projects valued at close to $8.4 billion.

The sector with the largest dollar value is Oil Sands. At the end of June there are 62 oil sands projects (mines, in-situ extraction and upgraders) with an estimated value of $125.8 billion. These projects are either under construction or scheduled to begin construction within the next two to three years. A number of oil sands projects have additional phases, but the capital values of these future phases are not included in the current report.

As of the end of June 2012 the Inventory includes 19 projects with a value of $1.4 billion that are on hold. In June 2011 there were 55 deferred projects valued at $21.2 billion. Currently the residential category has the largest number of deferred projects at seven.

One hundred and twenty-one new projects were added to the Inventory between April 1 and June 30, 2012. The estimated construction value of these new projects is nearly $9.0 billion. The largest project in terms of dollar value is the Anthony Henday Road NE valued at $1.8 billion, followed by the proposed CNRL ‘Grouse’ oil sands project ($1.5 billion) and the proposed MEG Energy / Devon NEC ‘Access’ pipeline expansion from Edmonton to RM of Wood Buffalo ($1 billion).

These gains were offset by the cancellation of the TransAlta/TransCanada Pipeline ‘Project Pioneer’ Carbon Capture project valued at $1.4 billion.

Forty per cent of the 121 new IMAP projects are infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, water/sewer, government office buildings, RCMP/police/fire stations, LRT lines and transit centres) valued at $2.7 billion, while another 15 per cent are commercial/retail projects (shopping centres, office towers, warehouses) with a value of $205 million.

Twelve per cent are residential projects (apartment buildings, townhouse complexes, affordable housing) valued at $325 million.

Ten per cent of the new projects are institutional projects (schools, hospitals, post-secondary education, seniors lodges/continuing care/supportive housing projects) with an estimated construction value of $706 million.

Tourism/recreation projects made up eight per cent of new projects in the report. This sector includes hotels / motels, recreation centres, swimming pools and construction undertaken in federal / provincial / municipal parks. The value of the tourism/recreation projects added totaled $192 million.

Six per cent of the 121 new projects are in the oil sands sector, with a value of nearly $3.4 billion.

Pipelines accounted for four per cent of the new projects with a value of almost $1.2 billion.

The remaining 5 per cent of new projects (valued at $261 million) are shared among the mining, oil & gas, power and other industrial sectors.
