What evidence could we use to make an informed decision?
Begin to analyse whether the British Empire was aided by the
industrial revolution?
(Or was it the other way around?)
Learning outcome
Was 1750 – 1900 an era of progress?
In our study of history so far we have learnt about political revolutions – in England and America. Cycle 1 is about revolutions – but they are revolutions that have an impact on everyday life.On 1st May 1851, the Great Exhibition was opened in London by Queen Victoria. It brought together thousands of exhibits, with more than half of them being British. Approximately six million visitors came – many of them ordinary workers. The aim was to celebrate the progress being made in science, the arts and technology. The exhibition also intended to show everyone that Britain was the leading industrial nation – the ‘workshop of the world’. However not everyone felt the same way.

so more cloth could be woven. Demand for spun cotton increased
Threat to their jobs?
Spinning Jenny James Hargreaves 1767 Can be used at home. Produce 8x more yarn
Fine, but weak thread. Threat to jobs
Water Frame Richard Arkwright 1769 Made strong and tough yarn. Had to be put in a factory. Made spinning much quicker than weaving
Not as fine yarn as spinning jenny. Had to be put in a factory – needed water power
Spinning Mule Samuel Crompton 1779 Stronger cotton than made by the Spinning Jenny. Spun cotton onto 48 spindles. Finer yarn.
Produced a lot of steam.
Power Loom Edmund Cartwright 1785 Speeded up weaving to help mill owners produce cloth of the same quality.
At first it didn’t work properly. Had to be used in a factory. By 1820s thousands of hand weavers lost their jobs.

In your groups you need to:-• Provide a 2 minute sales pitch – and perform it to the dragon
• Demonstrate how your invention works (either by picture/model/ words)
• Project why your product will be bought
• Produce a hand out for the dragons to read
• Calculate how much share of your business you will sell
• All members of the group must participate in the sales pitch
•You will then receive the decision from the Dragons’ Den

Knowledge Names How well did they know their product?
Did you feel confident they were knowledgeable about what they were trying to sell?
Did they show any other knowledge about the time period / other machines?
T
To improve in this area I would recommend that
Understanding Names How well did the group understand their product / what was being asked of
them?
How well did they understand the instructions – what was being asked of a presentation / sales pitch?
Were they able to ‘ad-lib’ (make things up) on the spot?
T
To improve in this area I would recommend that
Skill Names How well did the group ‘pitch’ to the Dragons?
Did they show business expertise in order to ‘woo’ the Dragons into parting with their cash?
How well did they make their initial cost offer and %?
T
To improve in this area I would recommend that
Success Names How successful were the group – i.e. did the Dragons buy a share?
How close to their initial offer did they get?
How flexible were the group (willing to compromise?)
Did the Dragons end up competing for their product?
T
To improve in this area I would recommend that
Overall rating ***** Names In all of the categories : Knowledge, Understanding, Skill, Success how well
would you have scored them (out of 5 *) and WHY.
You must provide a reason (a sentence) for this, and it must be backed up with a point. (Evidence)
