Invasive Species: Backyard Invaders

The workshop will include instruction, discussion, field experience, and activities conducted by:

Northampton County Conservation District (NCCD) Penn State Agriculture Extension (Ag Ext.) Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission (PA F&B)

The workshop will be a combination of classroom instruction and activities, as well as field work.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn in a classroom setting about invasive insects, plants, aquatic species and animals that are impacting their local ecosystems from area experts. The afternoon session will include an invasive species hike through Camel's Hump Farm on the Johnston Estate where they will be able to view some of the invasive plants impacting the farm, learn about the problems they are causing, and aid in their removal. This will give the educators the chance to not only observe the invasive species and the damage they cause, but also the different methods for removal of each species. Educational hand-outs and tools will be provided for each teacher to implement the lessons learned in their own classrooms.

The workshop will provide educators with curriculum-based material. The content of this workshop meets

the Pennsylvania Academic Standards for Science & Technology and Environment & Ecology for grades 4 through 12, including such topics as unified themes, earth sciences, watersheds, environmental health, and humans and the environment.

Workshop topics:

o Invasive Plants of Pennsylvania. o Invasive Insects of Pennsylvania. o Invasive Aquatic Species of Pennsylvania. o Invasive Animals of the United States. o Invasive removal/ mitigation.
