Inuit language comprises two main groups: the western Inuit group and eastern Inuitgroup. Western Inuit group comprises Chukotka, Southwest Alaska, and Prince WilliamSound and Kodiak Island. The Eastern spreads from Norton Sound through NorthAlaskan coastline in the north, including inland areas in Kobuk and Anaktuwuk Pass.

In the 16th century the Inuit began to barter with European whalers and missionarys and others visitors to the north for tea, weapons and alcohol.
