Ammi Phillips (1788–1865), whose Girl in a Red Dress graces Intuit’s Forget Me NOT exhibition, traveled from town to town in the 19th century, peddling his stock trade in portraiture. In this two–part lecture, Elizabeth Whiting, curator at the Union League Club of Chicago, provides an overview of Phillips’ career, tracing the development of his style in relation to the portrait techniques and formats of his day. Scott Sikkema, Executive Director of Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education, will discuss the history and aesthetics of the itinerant artists; examining the relations between the circumstances of a vagabond, peripatetic existence and the art it produces.
