This book will show my journey I have taken through the unit of introductory studies. It has given me a taster of the concepts and

principles of graphic design. Whilst allowing me to experiment with the different styles of creating

and displaying work.

This chapter shows the process I went through for my project, from

intial thoughts to the final outcomes. My task was to visually

represent my personal journey from university to home or vice versa. This task made me think

deeper into my walk home and also to notice aspects

I have never noticed before. I was also able to use any material/

method to create my work which made for endlesss possibilities. But

i still needed to think about how to visually communicate my

personal journey in a way that is interesting and unique.

Introduction

Page 6: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

3

To start my project of I used a mind map to generate some ideas ranging from the obscure to the obvious. I tried to concentrate on the personal side of my journey home so I could stick to the brief.

Page 7: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

4

The first idea I had was to record all of the little men and bicycles I passed on my journey home but I felt that was a little boring. Another idea I had was to take photographs of all the one point perspectives I passed on my journey home. I liked the idea but i felt it wasn’t personal enough.

The next idea I had was the things you pass on your journey home that you never notice. With this Idea I felt that it had probably been done before as it was quite obvious and it didn’t excite me. The next idea was all of the relections I saw on my walk home, such as in puddles and windows. I liked this idea but I dont think the images would be very interesting so I didn’t choose the idea.

Page 8: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

5

All of my other ideas are shown here the first idea was the compass idea where I would document the direction of the compass throughout my journey but I thought that was little dull. The next idea was the tube idea which I really liked the look of. The idea was to place images in the circles to represent the landmarks I passed but I felt the concept behind the idea wasn’t strong enough. I then had an idea of documenting the

arrows I passed but again like the compass idea I felt it was a little dull. So I then had the idea of expanding where I would expand or make the importants parts that I notice on my journey larger than normal or 3D. I liked this idea but I think I still needed to make it more personal. The last and final idea was my favourite it was touch, the idea was the fact I

always stroke or touch things on my journey home. I think this idea has a really strong concept and personal aspects so I chose this idea to

develop.

Page 9: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

For the next step I took the walk to university picking up everything I touched on the way (The things that I could take). I then created a moodboard out of the items I collected to help inspire to develop the idea. I wanted to somehow get the viewer to be able to feel my journey. So next I tried to make my journey out of items I found.

Moodboard

Page 10: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

This was my attempt at making the journey out the objects I found I really like the look

of it as it looks really realistic but I don’t think it is a good representation of my journey home as it doesnt include the

objects I couldn’t take such as lamp posts. So for the next step I tried to capture my

journey through photographs.

Visual research

Page 15: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

These are the images I took on my journey home. They are a collection of everything I touched on the way to university. I will have to reduce the number of images as there are too many for your eye to focus on at the moment, I may ask my peers for help on this decision. The next step was to try and find a way to show the idea of touch and feel to the photographs.

12

Page 16: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

The next idea I had was to describe my journey using type made out of the objects that I collected. I liked the idea of it but I think it would be quite difficult to do and I want to use images rather than text for my idea of touch as i thin it would give a better message.

The next idea I had was again using type but this time with images aswell. For this idea I would make letter shapes using my hands over the photos of the things that I touched. I liked this idea but i still think I could cre-ate a better mes-sage so I decided to keep develop-ing my work.13

Page 17: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

14

The third idea I had was to lay a picture of my hand over the pictures to show the context of me touch-ing the objects. I like the look of it but I felt that the pictures may look a little repetitive if used hands for them all. So I decided to keep thinking of ways to show my touch idea.

I then took all of my work into my tutorial to discuss my ideas. We collectively came up with some interesting ideas such as 3D objects on a wall that you have to touch but I think the best idea was embossing paper. This meant I would be able to create the shape of the objects and would mean that the works is interactive and people can touch the work themselves, so that they can feel my personal journey.

Page 18: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

15

For this project we were not allowed to use google so I used the library’s resources to find out about embossing. I found it very difficult to find anything about embossing as there were only two books with anything relating to the subject but I did manage to find one with the information I needed. It described different methods of embossing paper from wetting the paper to making your own paper. I did not have the resources to make my own paper so I will have to exper-iment with wetting the pages and also dry embossing. Dry embossing and wet emboss-ing is where you place a shape underneath the paper and use a tool to go around the object to create the shape of the object.

embossing

Page 19: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

embossing

16

This was the first try using the wet em-bossing technique. The picture on the left is the attempt with a leaf. You can see the shape of the leaf quite well but it looks quite scruffy around the edges so I decided to try it with thicker paper as the paper was very thin.

The second came out even worse as the paper was too thick so that the shape couldn’t be defined. This was again using the wet embossing technique so for my next try I will use the dry em-bossing technique. Hopefully that will make the shape appear much better and more accurate aswell.

Page 20: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

embossing tutorialsI researched into emboss-ing a little more before I attempted any myself. The video I watched on the left was a tutorial on handmade paper and how you could wet the paper over an image to emboss the paper.

So I will try a variation of this method as I do not have time to make handmade paper I will dampen normal paper over a a piece of nature such as a leaf to experiment to see if it makes a good quality emboss.

17

Page 21: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

This method is similar to the dry embossing I looked at in the book, for this you get a stencil and an emboss-ing stylus as seen in the picture. Then go around the shape to create the embossed shape.

As I do not have an em-bossing tool such as the stylus I will have to try and find something similar maybe the bottom of a metal spoon. I need to also find out what material to make the stencil out of.

18

Page 22: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

19

This was my try using the dry embossing method. I think it worked really well as it gave a very accurate look and made the image come of the page enhancing my concept of touch. After deciding to use this method I needed to select the images to use and from there I will need to cut out the shapes of the photos on cardboard so that I can emboss the pages well. As cardboard worked really well ans easy to get hold of.

Page 23: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

20

Out of the many images I took I have chosen the six images above. I have these images for a few reason firstly I think they tell the story of my journey really well, secondly because I think they will all be very interesting as an embossed image and will make interesting textures. And lastly because they all have different shapes and angles making for six very individual pieces.

The next step for me will be to print these pictures out and stick them on some card-board and cut them out to make the stencils for the embossed pages. I have chosen to do them A5 so that they can make a nice sequence of images that are not too imposing.

Selecting the Images

StencilsThis page demonstrates the stencils I created for my embossing to make them I printed out the six images I chose as the final photographs as seen before. I then stuck them onto pieces of cardboard and cut out the parts of the image I found to be important and would help create the feel of what I was touching. I then stuck the cut out pieces onto A5 paper ready to be embossed.

Page 26: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

23

The images on the right were images I was experimenting with to put alongside the images so that people can easily tell what the embossed images were. Altough I really like the images and the effect the threshold has of bringing all of the images together. I decided not to put them alongside the embossed pages as I felt it would take away from the other images. And would distract the viewer and I think you would lose the subtle delicate na-ture of the embossed pages which are on just on white.

These are the six final outcomes from my first project. I am really happy with how the project has gone and I feel that the designs I created for my touch subject are really relevant. Although it is a little hard to see on the page the designs were really clear and had distinct lines that could be felt easily and you can easily make out the shapes. Overall I feel that the project has gone really well right from the initial ides through to the final pieces. One aspect I feel I could improve on is the research however it was very difficult to find any information in the library on embossing as it is a very small specific subject. I feel that the final pieces are really accurate to the brief as I feel I have captured my personal journey and with the embossing can also allow others to feel my journey home. Overall a good project with accurate concepts behind my ideas.

LIFe and

death

Page 31: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

28

The second project we had was life and death. Are task was to create a design for the back of a lorry representing life and death. For this we also had to just use illustrator as it would help improve our skills massively. To start the project I again used a mind map to help me collect my ideas and possible pathways.

Page 32: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

29

This idea was the thought of a living swimming seal on one side and then the blood on the other side representing his death. The pool of blood could represent a shark attack so I may try out an idea with a shark in the picture aswell. I also thought it could be about clubbing seals which could have a club one side and the seal the other.

This is the idea of heaven and hell. To be precise looking at the stairway to heaven and highway to hell. I also thought I could make them merge at one point to show the different paths that people lead after death. I would like to develop this idea further to see what the outcomes are like.

Page 33: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

30

The idea behind this piece was poaching I chose to use crocodiles but there are lots of other options. I like the idea but I think it is a little boring and im sure it has been done before, so that is why I have decided not to take in any further.

This idea was rusting. So one side would be a clean, new track whereas the other side would be a rusty old track. Also the door on the rusted track will be rusty to further enhance the rust concept. I chose not to take this forward as I think I could make a more interesting idea.

Page 34: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

31

This was very simple idea of two seperate doors one being held up easily by a man. The other will be the doors crushing the man trying to hold up the doors. I really like this idea as the simple look and idea has a powerful and slightly comical feel to it. So I would like to develop the idea further.

This is the immortal jellyfish which regen-rates to a younger version of its self when it is injured or dying. So that is why it covers both sides as it is between life and death. I like this idea as it is very different from my other ideas so that is why I would like to develop it further.

Page 35: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

32

This idea is the thought of eggs falling out of the tree. I like this idea as the image shows the egg on the verge of life and death. Another possible route could have been a cuckoo in the middle as they lay they there egg in an-other birds nest the baby then hatches and knocks the other eggs of the tree.

Following the theme of heaven and hell I made this idea where it shows the gateway to heaven on one side and the doors to death. I like the idea behind it but I don’t think the concept behind it is strong enough and the image itself may be difficult to recreate.

Maeve Berry is a photographer who takes photographs of the passing on of people or things or just the moment before as the light begins to fade. I like that idea the thought of the tunnel of light as you pass away which could be a very good idea. The dark black tones help give the effect of death so I could link that into my work as it makes everything look more death like.

This is visual reasearch to help inspire me for the four ideas I have to look deeper into. This really helped me to think of different compositions and imagery. Next I will try and create some mock ups to see which idea I like the best.

Seal Ideas

These were quick designs I made using photographs I found, I couldn’t take my own as they were of sharks and seals which could have taken me months to capture images of. But I have done some quick mock ups to see what they look like.

I really liked the idea of the seals and the sharks but I don’t think it works on the back of the truck due to the large amounts of blue around the central images. So I will not be taking this idea any further.

Page 43: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

Heaven and Hell Ideas

The pictures above are quick mock up designs I made for the heaven and hell theme I thought of. I preffered the idea of the highway to hell and the stairway to heaven so I used that idea here. Above you can see I tried it using the landscape method but I didn’t like

the look of it as it didn’t seem to jell together well. I much preffered the pictures above as the same go off into the distance next to each showing the narrow line between heaven and hell. But I have decided not to take it forward as I dont think it is original enough.

40

Page 44: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

Stickman Ideas

The idea above is for the stickman and the idea that the doors are closing in on him to his death as he tries to hold them up. I really love this idea as I think it is simple but effective. The man being crushed in this picture looks a little strange so I would like to change him to see what it looks like.

The idea above is the second idea I made changing the look of the man, I think he looks much better now but he still needs a little tweeking. I would like to further develop this idea as I think it is a really good idea and uses the actual truck design to help give it context.

41

Page 45: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

42

Jellyfish Ideas

The last idea I developed was the immortal jellysifh idea. I really liked this idea as it hung inbetween life and death and gave a completely different look on the project. The idea on the left is the thought of having a large picture covering the whole of the back panels maybe with a little writing. I like the idea but if I decided to use it it needs more refinement.

The next idea I created did have both text and an image on it. I really loved the look of this as the jellyfish looked almost alien like. But I did feel that there could maybe be some small jellyfish in the background to emphasise the point that there are millions of immortal jellyfish.

Page 46: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

43

After creating all of the quick mock ups for the four ideas I decided to develop two even further. One was the jellyfish idea. I had to use pictures from the internet for this as they live 1000 of metres underwater. The picture on the right was a piece I made using lots of the jellyfish and some text fading into the picture. I really like the mystical look of the jellyfish but I feel there needs to be a large jellyfish at the front to show them off better.

The picture on the left shows the change that I made to the image. For this I added the large image of the jellyfish on the front to enhance the image. I really like the look of this piece as it looks very mystical and immortal. However I have decided not to use the jellyfish idea as I dont think it fits the brief perfectly. As there is not a clear life and death but I do like the idea still as I think it hangs in the balance between life and death.

Page 47: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

44

So I have decided to use the stickman idea of one being safe holding up the doors whereas the other is being crushed by the doors. I really like this idea as it uses the truck really well to signify the life and death. So for the next step I will need to figure out the col-ours for the image. I like the black background and the white stickman as I think it makes them stick out more. I aslo like the dark grey wheel cover so i will use that but im not a fan of the dark body of the truck.

I much prefer the body colour of the truck on this one so I will use that colour for my final image. I also need to change the colour of the lights and the number plate to make it look more realistic. I noticed the gaps in the limbs of the stickmen so I will have to fix that aswell once completed it should create a good overall idea.

Page 48: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

AB51 DVLGB

Page 49: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

46

The image on the left is the final image that I created for the life and death project. I feel that it represents the brief really well as you can clearly see the life and death. I also think that the colour change that I made compared to the previous images was a good decision as it makes it look much more realistic. Even though it is

quite a simple design I think it has a very powerful message behind it. You could almost say it is the the doors to death itself. I felt that this project has gone well as I managed to have a lot of ideas and was able to refine them succesfully to create a piece of work that I am really happy with. It also really helped me to get to grips with

adobe illustrator.

For this project we were given three articles to look at, question and explore. We then had to form an opinion on the article and expand are research from there looking at different aspects behind the articles. After reading them all I chose to select the rich and poor article “Richest 1% of people own nearly half the global wealth says report” as I felt I related to it best. I then decided to make a mind map of the ideas, similarites and opinions I formed.

Page 52: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

Page 53: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

The wealth of the 1% richest people in the world amounts to $110tn (£60.88tn), or 65 times as much as the poorest half of the world.

Political leaders and top business people head to the snowy peaks of Davos for this week’s World Economic Forum.

Oxfam also argues that this is no accident either, saying growing inequality has been driven by a “power grab” by wealthy elites, who have co-opted the political process to rig the rules of the economic system in their favour.

Oxfam warned that the fight against poverty cannot be won until wealth inequality has been tackled.

Vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest of us to fight over crumbs from the top table.

Gender inequality, with the number of female delegates actually dropping from 17% in 2013 to 15% this year.

Oxfam found that the rich have successfully wielded political influence to influence policies in their favour on issues ranging from financial deregulation, tax havens, anti-competitive business practices to lower tax rates on high incomes and cuts in public services for the majority.

Davos faces up to weak growth and rising inequality

The 2014 World Economic Forum will also probably be talking about threat of internet meltdown, the situa-tion in the Middle East – and the ongoing dearth of women delegates

Oxfam wants a billionaire wealth tax - is it feasible?

The charity wants to charge billionaires a 1.5% wealth tax to fund schooling and health in the world’s poorest countries. Is this a realistic proposition?

Is a 1.5% wealth tax on the world’s super-rich a realistic proposition?1. Yes: we can impose the tax if we have the will to do so 2. No: it’s impractical, unenforceable, and the super-rich will avoid or evade it anyhow

World’s richest man would take 220 years to spend his wealth

Number of billionaires on Earth has more than doubled since the financial crisis, according to OxfamExplosion in wealth inequality needs urgent plan of action, says Oxfam

According to Oxfam it would take the world’s richest man, Carlos Slim, 220 years to spend all his money at a rate of $1m per day.

The number of billionaires worldwide totalled 1,645 people by March 2014 - 793 billionaires in March 2009.It found that if all the billionaires in the world were to be taxed at 1.5% (on wealth over $1bn, as of 2014) it could raise $74bn, enough money to fill the annual gaps in funding needed to get every child into school and to deliver health services in the world’s poorest countries. 50

Page 54: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

51

After having a lecture on ‘what is research’ we learnt about the library sources and especially bob (Box of Broadcasts). It meant that I could look for programs relating to the topic of tax and billionaires and see what I could find. I found two programs about the themes, after watching them I felt much more passionate about the subject but it was hard to use the data from the programs as they were at least 2 years old and the facts have changed a lot by now.

using my research to create Ideas

53

To start with I had session with my fellow peers were we collected out ideas and tried to develop what we had found out through our research (as shown above). Looking at all of the possible ways we could create are work. To start we used the questions to help us with our context of our work, such as the target audiencce.

After this session and the collecting of my research I decided I would start my idea genration with the ideas of billionaires, taxes and infographics all about poverty and the divide between rich and poor.

Page 57: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

54

The next step I took was to start to generate some ideas as seen on the left. After finding out some really interesting facts from my research I really wanted to include them in my work aswell so I would quite like to try some info-graphics aswell. As I think it would be perfect for this project as I want to get the facts and figures across to people in an interesting way.

The image on the right shows my intial ideas in writing. After thinking a little more into my project I felt I needed to refine it a little more as I think it was to open so I decided just look into the divide between rich and poor specifically bil-lionaires. And the ways that they avoid/influence taxes, goverment and the world due to the wealth. My next step will be to draw them out to see what they look like.

Page 58: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

55

These two drawings were my first ideas the top idea is about dodging taxes. I like the message I am trying to portray but I think the I image isn’t very good so I will not use that idea.

The second Idea was about billionaires controlling the world due to the money they have. I like the idea I think it is quite a comical look at the rich aswell being big and fat due to there wealth. I may try out this idea depending on my other ideas.

Page 59: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

56

The third idea I had was about the rich bribing there way through life such as taxes, the government and there personal roles in the world. I like the idea but I think the imagery is a little tacky and it looks more like a drug dealer than a wealthy rich man.

This is some very simple imagery portraying a very powerful message about children getting medication and education if billionaires were taxed more. I really like the idea of this so I would like to dvelop the idea a little further.

Page 60: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

The top idea I had was to use the fact about buses ‘85 richest people have equal wealth to 3.5 billion people’. I really like the idea of using the bus as a way to show the size and wealth difference. But I think the idea could be enhanced a lot further.

The bottom picture I another take on the quote but this time using countries to compare the difference. An idea I had was to make them into postcrads describing the difference between the rich and the poor and what difference increasing taxes could make.57

Page 61: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

tutorialAfter presenting my research and ideas to my peers and teachers. We collectively felt that the bus idea was really powerful and I should enhance that idea further.

How do I show the difference?

• How many buses fits 3.5 billion people

• Leaflet - that folds out with lots of buses

• How can I show 3.5 billion on a bus

• Could be a toy bus filled with sand each grain could represent each person

• Oragami - Bus• 85 faces of billionaires stuck

onto the windows once they have payed the tax

• Use info graphics to display inormation

• Put a potition at the end• Or a link to the pole on the

guardian about getting billion-aires to pay 1.5% tax

Page 63: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

60

Page 64: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

The image above is a piece I created on illustrator it is showng that the 85 richest people is equivalent to 3.5 billion and I worked out that is the same population as both china and india. I really like the look of ths piece as I think it looks really professional and shows the message really clearly. I would definetly like to include this on my design.

61

Page 65: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

The image below was a simple piece I made to show how much money could be generated if all the billionaires were taxed 1.5%. I again really like the clear message that this piece is showing. I again would like to include it in my design. I may reduce the size of the circle a little as it is a little imposing but overall i am happy with the design.

62

Page 66: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

63

The picture above was the last design I developed further this is a direct link to the bus idea and I think is necessary for my final designs. But I do not like the look of it as I think it looks very childish and silly. So I will have to develop the of this maybe have one bus on the left and lots on the right to represent the huge number of buses 3.5 billion would fit into.

Page 67: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

64

After presenting my developed ideas in my tutorial they had the same views as me they really liked the idea of the bus depicting the divide between the rich and the poor and the idea of trying to make billionaires pay more money trough taxes to help the poor. When talking about my ideas we thought about making a flat pack net so that I can put all of my ideas on one side and create a bus for the other side to fold and make. Which I loved the idea of so I would like to develop that idea.

Page 68: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

65

Page 69: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

This page is showing the process and idea path that I have taken and the questions that I need to ask to take my ideas further. I will aslo need to think about the way that fold my design to create the best bus shape.

After deciding to make the net design and use all of the designs I made previously on one side of the net and the other being the actual bus. I decided I needed to change my design for the actual bus piece.

The first design was one showing the amount of buses that 3.5 billion fit in. I like the idea but I again think it looks a little chidish as the colours dont look right. So I decided not to use that idea.

I then created the more simple design to the left using the outline of the bus i drew and large fonts. I think the image is a little flat and dull to look at due to the monochrome colours. I also tried to add colour but it was even harder to focus on anything.

The image above is my favourite design that I made it is very powerful due to the colours and I think the simple bus design makes the visuals and text sit really nicely together. I made the ‘YOU’ large to try and entice the viewer and make them think more deeply about the subject. Therefore I will use this idea and put it on the front of my net design.

Page 72: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

Creating my designThe next step I took was to start creating my design. To do this I planned out my measurements using calculations and the requirements of the brief. I then went onto adobe illus-trator and created the guides for the net shape so I could create my work easily within the borders (As shown Below).

The next step was to start creating and drawing my bus designs. This stage took a very long time as I tried to be as accurate as I could to get a realistic look. The result is shown on the right. I am really happy with the outcome as I feel it captures the feel and shape of the bus well.

Coloured Bus Net

This was the coloured and shaded bus net that I made. I also realised after folding it together the two side panels were the wrong way round as they didn’t match the front and back correctly so I will have to rectify that. Also the size of the top of the bus needs to be made smaller to fit the scale better.

And this is the final design for the front. I decided to change all the backgrounds to white so that the whole thing flowed better and I also got rid of the book behind the information as I felt there was too much going on, I also changed the red edges to white aswell as I didnt need them to be red.

Final Folded Bus

In evaluation I think this project has gone really well from start to finish. I managed to get more research done than the previous projects but I still felt I could do a little more to enhance my work. But I feel my development of my ideas has been really good as I have shown the step by step process I went through to achieve my designs. As for the final piece am really happy with the outcome as I feel it displays all I wanted to say about billionaires paying tax. Also the folding aspect of the bus makes it more of a fun leaflet and makes it more interactive to the puplic. I feel that it would be very suitable for my adult target audience as they would take more interest into it due to the layout. Overall a good project.

Book Binding Paper Grain:

The grain on paper is created by the way in which the fibresrun. So to start we had to ascertain this. To do this we used the method of flexing where you gently bend the pages and the on with the least resistance is the grain.

85

Page 89: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

Method:

1. Check the paper grain using the method above2. Trim the pages so that the spine is perfectly

flat3. Add at least to extra pages to either side of the

book (in case of errors made when making)4. Place the paper into the Binding Press. with

the spine down5. Then glue in both directions6. Leave the glue to dry7. Remove the stuck pages from the press and

discard extra pages. Cut slits in the paper ready for the thread.

8. Place the thread in loops along the spine9. Then glue mull against the spine, a little wider

than the spine10. Apply the second piece of mull which is slightly

shorter, but the same width11. Glue a paper strip against spine, fold with

bone folder12. Cut and bend the hard case to fit the book 13. Glue the edges of the cover to the book 14. Leave under weight to flatten and dry com-

pletely15. Trim edges of the book to watever size needed16. Round the corners if necessary

Illustrator

MOTO LAND ASIA

For the first week of the tech dem sessions we learnt the basics of illustrator. Such as setting up our documents, creating the workspace to make creating work easier, and the pen tool an essential for abode illustrator. We then had to recreate some logos that were given to us.

We could adapt to our own ideas though such as changing the fonts if we didn’t have the font and so on. My attempts are the three below I really enjoyed creating the pieces even though it was difficult at first but I got the hang of it after trying the program out.

Page 92: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

89f{}{}{}

Page 93: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

We also had another sessions where we learnt about how to extrude and bevel work such as the experiments seen above which I made by messing with the shapes and effects.

We then also learnt about long shadows (Blends). The three pieces I created can be seen on the left, I experimented with the opacities and the positioning of the shadows to see what effects they would make and also if i didn’t blend the shadows at all.

Indesign

Our other sessions involved using Indesign a program I had again never used before so I found it a little challenging at first but after the basics such as setting up the document creating grids and placing text and image boxes I felt mores secure. We then had to collect 5 random images and create a double page spread using the techniques we learnt. The piece above is the design I made I am quite happy with it seeing as it was my first time and I only had a short period of time to do it in.

Page 95: Introductory Studies - Will Durant

For the second session we looked depper into indesign looking at the text and images further. We looked at ways of editing reshaping and resizing text to accomidate your applications. Such as increasing the first letter size to the spacing in paragraphs. We then had the task to create a business card for ourselves. I found it tricky at first to come up with ideas but I managed to come up with the design below which I am really happy with as I think its looks very clean and professional.

Evaluation

Overall I feel that the tech demonstration sessions were a huge help to me as I was able to learn new skills on programs I have never used before. It helped me greatly when producing my work for my projects and when creating this book overall I felt it was very helpful and I feel I have improved greatly in the area.

V & aFor our work we also took a trip down to London to visit the V & A. There was an exhibition on at the time called diobedient objects which was a very interesting . I believe it was about the way the ordinary public created artist created pieces of art using what they had to put a messages across to the world such as killings and so on. I think it was a very unique exhibition and it helped me to look deeper into why people make work for show or for real reasons.

It helped me with my work to not nec-essarily look at the quality of the work produced but the meaning and context behind the work which I think is a major part of understanding a brief aswell as the final outcome that must be created.

ScienceMuseum

97

I also visited the science museum after visiting the V & A as I thought it would further help my learning. When looking around I found out some very interesting facts about science but what I looked for was the minor details the intersting parts and designs that people had made as intial sketches and ideas and there more scientific way of displaying design.

One of my favouriteof my favourite pieces was the image below of the man in blue shading with pink

squiggles and marks on his which make an ordinary picture into a fascinating picture making you think mor about the thoughts in the mans brain.

Another thing that caught my eye was the 3D printing and sheer scale of the things they could make was amazing from working engines and gears to a wonderful style of type as shown on the right.

natural history MuseumWhen visiting the natural history museum I was shocked by the number of beautiful and inventive ways of displaying typography. Such as the layers type on the next page which is spread across the panels to intise the viewer. I didn’t feel that this museum was as helpful as the others but I still think that it was a useful experiences to see the layout and styling of the whole place.

One other thing I found amazing though was the large circular globe that you pass through as you go up the esculator as it is very unusual but is extremely eye catching gives you something to interact with as you go up a normally boring esculator.
