Introduction
NHPC Limited presentlyowns and operates total 12 Hydro Power
Stations situated in Northern, Eastern and
North-Eastern regions of India. NHPC
Limited commenced its first commercial
generation in 1982 starting from Bairasiul
Power Station. Over the period of time, 11
more power stations started commercial
generation as per the details given in
the table below.
The commercial aspects of NHPC Limited power stations are being handled by
Commercial Division, which is an important unit of corporate centre and has been
assigned responsibility of fixation of tariff of all the operational power stations of the
corporation from time to time as per directives of Central Electricity Regulatory
Commission (CERC)*. Most important functions of commercial division include
Billing for the energy supplied and realisation of revenue, reconciliation of accounts,
negotiating and signing of Bulk power supply agreements in respect of operating
power stations as well as Power Purchase Agreement for the upcoming power
stations of NHPC Limited with various Bulk Power Consumers and coordinationwith Ministry of Power, various Regional Power Committee (RPC's), Regional Load
Dispatch Centres (RLDCs), SEB's/Union Territories, CERC, CEA and other power
sector utilities.

The Company
NHPC Limited (Formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation
Ltd.), A Govt. of India Enterprise, was incorporated in the year 1975 with an authorised
capital of Rs. 2000 million and with an objective to plan, promote and organise an
integrated and efficient development of hydroelectric power in all aspects. Later on
NHPC expanded its objects to include development of power in all its aspects through
conventional and non-conventional sources in India and abroad. At present, NHPC is
a Mini Ratna Category-I Enterprise of the Govt. of India with an authorised share
capital of Rs. 1,50,000 Million . With an investment base of over Rs. 3,87,180 Million
Approx. , NHPC is among the TOP TEN companies in the country in terms of
investment.
Initially, on incorporation, NHPC took over the execution of Salal Stage-I, Bairasiul andLoktak Hydro-electric Projects from Central Hydroelectric Project Construction and
Control Board. Since then, it has executed 14 projects with an installed capacity of
5295 MW on ownership basis including projects taken up in joint venture. NHPC has
also executed 5 projects with an installed capacity of 89.35 MW on turnkey basis. Two
of these projects have been commissioned in neighbouring countries i.e. Nepal and
Bhutan.
During the financial year 2010-2011 , NHPC Power Stations achieved the highest ever
generation of 18604 MU.

GENERATION
During the period 2010-2011 , NHPC had a sales turnover of 4046.59 crore with a Net
Profit of 2166.67 crore.

Presently NHPC is engaged in the construction of 10 projects aggregating to a total
installed capacity of 4502 MW. NHPC has added 1970 MW during the 10th Plan
period and planned to add 2230 MW during 11th Plan period. 12 projects of
9651 MW are awaiting clearances/Govt. approval for their implementation. DetailedProjects report are being prepared for 7 projects of 2485 MW.
Since its inception in 1975, NHPC has grown to become one of the largest organisation
in the field of hydro power development in the country. With its present capabilities,
NHPC can undertake all activities from concept to commissioning of Hydroelectric
Projects.
To Plan, promote and organise an integrated and efficientdevelopment of power in all its aspects throughConventional and Non Conventional Sources in India and
Abroad subject to clause 1 (b), including planning,investigation, research, design and preparation ofpreliminary, feasibility and definite project reports,construction, generation, operation and maintenance of
power stations and projects, transmission, distribution,trading and sale of power generated at Stations inaccordance with the national economic policy andobjectives laid down by the Central Government from timeto time and release of water and other needs to the StateGovt. as per the agreed parameters.
To Plan, promote and organise an integrated and efficientdevelopment of Thermal Power in all its aspects throughits subsidiary Company i.e. Narmada HydroelectricDevelopment Corporation Limited including planning,
investigation, research, design and preparation ofpreliminary, feasibility and definite project reports,construction, generation, operation and maintenance ofpower stations and projects, transmission, distribution,trading and sale of power generated at Stations.
To undertake, where necessary, the construction of inter-state transmission lines and ancillary works for timely and

coordinated inter-state exchange of power.
To coordinate the activities of its subsidiaries, to determinetheir economic and financial objectives / targets and toreview, control, guide and direct their performance with a
view to secure optimum utilisation of all resources placedat their disposal.
To act as an agent of Government / Public Sector financialinstitutions, to exercise all the rights and powersexercisable at any meeting of any Company engaged inthe planning, investigation, research, design andpreparation of preliminary, feasibility and definite projectreports, construction, generation, operation, maintenanceof Power Stations and Projects, transmission, distribution,trading and sale of power in respect of any shares held by
the Government, Public financial institutions, nationalisedbanks, nationalised insurance companies with a view tosecure the most effective utilisation of the financialinvestments and loans in such companies and the mostefficient development of the concerned industries.
To carry on the business of purchasing, selling, importing,exporting, producing, trading, manufacturing or otherwisedealing in all aspects of planning, investigation, research,design and preparation of preliminary, feasibility anddefinite project reports, construction, generation, operation
and maintenance of Power Stations and Projects,transmission, distribution and sale of Power, PowerDevelopment, including forward, backward or horizontalintegration ancillary and other allied industries and for thatpurpose to install, operate and manage all necessaryplants, establishments and works.
