INTRODUCTION

NASA sent a space shuttle to space to investigate a new planet, the shuttle and everything inside became stuck to the planet like glue as if there was an attraction. The President of the United States has hired your company to discovery why the shuttle is drawn to this planet.

• A magnet can stick to objects made of iron or steel; but a magnet cannot be made to stick to materials like plastic, cotton, or wood which is not magnetic. The difference between a magnetized piece of iron and an ordinary piece of iron is the alignment of domains. In an unmagnetized piece of iron the domains are randomly oriented, and in a magnetized piece of iron the domains are oriented in the direction of the magnetic field. Dropping a magnet can displace the perfectly aligned domains, thus the magnet becomes weaker. The more perfectly aligned the domains are, the stronger the magnet pull becomes.

• The North Pole of one magnet will repel and push away the North Pole of another magnet. The South Pole of one magnet will repel and push away the South Pole of another magnet.

• Magnets are used every day all over the world. Examples are: fridge magnets , a compass has a tiny bar magnet in it so that explorers can find their way, televisions, computers, microwave ovens, trains, and in the systems used to slow down roller coasters and subways.

• All electricity is made from magnets. When a magnet is spun inside a coil of wire, electrons start to flow from the wire. All power plants use fuel to spin magnets.

• Never! Place a magnet near computers, televisions, watches, clocks, tapes, videos or credit cards. It may damage or distort these products.
