What is WRO? - Summary• WRO (World Robot Olympiad) is an organization for
STEM education founded in 2004• Worldwide – more than 20,000 teams in around 50
counties• Lego robot controllers (RCX, NXT, or EV3) are used• Focused missions with smaller team size – only 2 or 3
talented students and one team coach• No direct adult help: Most popular category, Regular,
has unknown factors revealed on the day of the competition.
• Pre-constructed robots are not allowed for Regular cat. Competition begins with 150 min of assembly time.
• Open Category for promoting creativity with more freedom

Competition Categories of WRO
• Regular‐ WRO final host country designs the rules for each year‐ Building and programming a robot on the competition
day without any adult’s help‐ “Surprise” rules before and after impounding
• Open‐ WRO final host country decides the theme
‐ Other materials/programming language can be used
• Gen II Football (Not offered in USA 2014)
• College Reg. Challenge (Not offered in USA 2014)

Regular Category Details (1/2)
• Coaches are not allowed to enter the pit area• All the parts for the robot should be disassembled
completely in the beginning• No instruction guides (paper sheets/files) allowed• No Internet/Cell phone use allowed in the pit• Only one controller (RCX, NXT, or EV3)• Contestants may use pre-made programs• Should be fully autonomous• Up to 3 motors are allowed• EV3 gyro sensor is not allowed in 2014

Regular Category Details (2/2)
• Starting robot size: less than 25x25x25cm
• After starting, the size is not restricted
• A multiplexor (sensor or motor) is NOT allowed
• 150 min (2.5 hours) to assemble & program
• If any violation is found at the inspection, only 3 minutes are given to fix it
• Best score out of 2 runs in the USA. Each country decided how to run competitions
• Tie breakers: (1) score of the other round (2) rerun, if needed

• Registration fee: $70• Check-in fee for each competition: $30• Regular Cat. Table: (Same as FLL table) – Not required• Game pieces: free for the first 40 teams registered• Mat: $70 plus shipping
• Passport• Travel: Airfare to Sochi, Russia is cheaper…• Lodging and meals for 3 nights in Sochi per person: $150

• Everything including poster boards must fit in 2x2x2 meter space
• One 2.5ft x 8ft table is given in the USA. Teams may use floor, instead of the table top
• RCX, NXT, or EV3 and *any* materials (not necessarily Lego)
• Multiple controllers allowed? – yes!
• Any software
• Can be pre-assembled and pre-programmed

• The task is to design and create robots that will assist humankind in solving tasks in space
• Why use robots in space?‐ Can go to places where humans cannot
‐ Highly resistant to temperature/impact
‐ Are able to work long hours
‐ Do not need food or drink

• Waiting list in case of decline. Must decided within 7 days.
