For my book cover assignment, I decided to re-design three fiction books from the Matched Trilogy by Allie Condie. The books are titled ‘Matched’, ‘Crossed’ & ‘Reached’. All three books have extremely engaging story lines but their current jackets do not do them justice. For the new jackets, i decided to take a text only approach (no photographs). These books are about love and rebellion (like hungergames) targeted at young adult readers, and this was taken in consideration at the beginning of the design process.

CHOSEN TRILOGY

MANIFESTO / STYLE

The style of this redesigned trilogy is be clean & unique. The front of each book consists of the title placed sideways along the right side of the cover. All of the titles consist of the same number of letters, which is nice to work with to keep the books looking consistant. The book design repliates the storyline theme, plot and overall reading experience. The front cover title was created using a stamping technique that we learnt in class. These stamps were then photographed then edited in photoshop to remove the background. The authors name was initially hand drawn and then vectorised in illustrator.

I decided to use the same colour scheme as the original books to tie the old theme loosely into the new. Red, Green & Aqua are the most distinct colours in the series. Red was used to represent ‘match’ sticks (& the texture of the stamp looks like it was been made using match heads), the blue is symbolic of a river ‘crossing’ & the green on the third book represents the reaching towards freedom (having escaped from society). Also, the books seem to be for both young men & woman so that is why the colours are not gender specific.

MANIFESTO / COLOUR

MANIFESTO / TYPOGRAPHY

I decided that the title was going to be San Serif typeface as it has a more impacting effect on the viewer. The typeface was drawn up in pencil & then vectorised in illustrator. The authors name was drawn with a handwritten script style to compliment the san serif. The vectorised san serif title was printed then cut into foam and stamped on paper just like the weekly activity. The authors name and ‘NY times best seller’ was then placed on the flat net ontop of the edited title which was created on paper.

The back of the book covers is simple and not bombarded with information. The story blurb, barcode & one of the paint marks (shown above) are the only three pieces on the back cover. The blurb is written using the Helvetica light as its clean, sharp and easy to read. I decided that by putting an M in paint on the back of every book ties them together without having to state that each book is following from the previous story.

The stamping process was fun and surprisingly easy. I purchased some foam sheets from lincraft and one of the sheets i bought had a bubbly texture (lumps) which i thought would really suit the first book as the texture when printed looks like it was made using a ‘match’ stick as a dot painting method for a book titled ‘Matched’. For the second book called ‘Crossed’, i used normal flat foam but with a sharp object drew crosses onto to surface so when it was printed it altered the way the paint pressed onto the paper. For the third book reached i just did used the flat flam as is but it still had really a nice outcome. For the back paint mark, I simply painted a circle with an M inside (Matched Series) to tie all of the books together.

Steps:1. Cut the letters out of the foam (tracing a printed version of my vectorised typeface2. Glued the letters neatly on one big piece of thick cardboard 3. Using a paint brush, painted the colour onto the letters 4. Stamped the letters onto a clean piece of paper (letters are backwards but flipped in Photoshop) / painted back page M also using same colour on another sheet of clean paper5. Photograph Print & M6. Enhanced and paper background removed and then placed onto the net7. Add the authors name (vector) and NY times best seller note (vector), blurb & barcode.

I believe the books as a Trilogy work really nicely together. The book spines are all identical except for the Title & the second letter of the title is the colour of the title on the front of the book. The books look very mature & sophisticated (but also quirky) which is something a lok of people look for when deciding whether to read a book as it’s hard not to judge a book by its cover!
