Introduction to the Back
• Selectthe“Dissect”toolfromthetoolbar(turns blue when selected)
• Clickontheskintoremoveit(now you see the fat and other subcutaneous tissue)
• Removethefatjustliketheskin
4 Skin the cadaver to reveal the anatomy below:
Use the tools and controls in the toolbar below each area to manipulate the
corresponding dissection or cross-section
What muscles make up the erector spinae? (Remeber the mnemonic I Love Spines!)

• Dragthereferenceplaneinthedissectionareabyitsbluebordertotheupperback(the cross sections are numbered in the lower left corner, you should be close to 399)
• Exploretheanatomyofthebackbymovingyourmouseoverthecrosssection(structures are identified at the top of the cross section area)
Rotate the dissection using the left or right arrow keys while holding the command (Mac) or ctrl (PC), hold down shift to rotate 90° at a time
Alternately, use the rotation tool below the dissection area
3 Set the cross section through the upper back:

• Selectthe“Index”tab• Enter“erector”intothesearchbox• Selectthe“Erectorspinae-Left”fromthelist• Clickthe“Add&Highlight”button
(the cross sections are in standard radiologic orientation so the left erector spinae are on the right side)• Ontheleftside,dissectthemiddleandinferiorpartsoftheTrapeziusmuscle• Underthetrapezius,dissecttherhomboidmajormuscle

• Selectthe“Rotate”toollocatedinthetoolbarbelowthedissectionarea• Rotatetoaposteriorviewbyclickinginthedissectionareaanddraggingthemousetotheleftorright

• Clickthe“Clear”buttonintheupper-rightcornerofthescreentoclearthedissectionarea• Selectthe“Systems”tab• Selectthe“Skeletalsystem”andclickthe“Add”button• Selectthe“Tissues”tab• Expand“Nervous(PeripheralNervousSystem)”usingtheicontotheleftofit• SelecttheLumbarnerve[L1]andclick“AddandHighlight”• Usethe“Move”tooland“Zoom”controltopositionL1inthemiddleofthedissectionarea
7 Isolate the spinal nerves by simplifying the dissection:
5 Take a closer look by centering the back in the dissection area:• Usethe“Zoom”control,locatedinthetoolbarbelowthedissectionarea,toenlargethediessection• Selectthe“Move”toolanddragthedissectionwithyourmousetorepositionit• Dissecttheveinsofthethoraxandposteriorheadandnecktocleanuptheimage
• Select“Classic”fromthe“Views”dropdownmenuintheupper-leftcornerofthescreen• Resetthedissectionbyclickingthe“Reset”buttonintheupper-rightcornerofthescreen

Move the cross section 1mm at a time by holding the command (Mac) or ctrl (PC) key while pressing the up or down arrow keys
Highlight structures or de-highlight a structure with the highlight tool
• Placethecrosssectionthroughthemiddleofthetriangleofauscultation(cross section 434)(The triangle of auscultation is the point through the back with the thinnest muscular layer betweenthe skin and the lungs, making an excellent place to listen to breath sounds)

(Notice how close the nerve passes to the intervertebral disk as it exits the spine. This is the basis for the nerve pathology associated a herniated disk )
8 Follow the lumbar nerve as it exits the spinal column:
• Clickthe“Reset”buttonintheupper-rightcornerofthescreentoresetthedissection• Zoomoutandcentertheupperbackintheveiw• Dissecttheskin,fatandveinsofthethoraxtocleanupthedissection• Selectthe“Highlight”toolfromthetoolbar• Clickontheinferiorpartofthetrapeziusmuscleontheleftsidetohighlight• Highlighttheleftlatissimusdorsimuscle• Highlightthetendonandmuscleoftherhomboidmuscleaswell(ontheleft)
