Repairing a Roof With Shingles

• Types of Repairs– Determine if you need to just replace a few shingles or

sections of roof.– Most damage occurs around flashing, corners, or joints.– If not fixed, it can cause eventual structural damage and

cost more that it would in the first place.

• Estimating Repairs– After determining the amount of damage, estimate the

cost of repairs on the area damaged and cost of materials to fix it.

– If you are uncomfortable working on a roof, hire a roofer to do it for you. It may be cheaper in the long run!

Laying Shingles

• Shingles can be laid over older shingles unless there are three layers. Then they must all be removed and new ones put up.

• Always try to use a shingle that is similar in size and color as the old one.

• Apply asphalt roofing cement to the shingle before placing.

• Nail down with 1 ¾ roofing nails.• Cover Nails with shingle above.• Put cement around nail head to

prevent leaks.
