1922 - BBC first start broadcasting

1933 - Radio Luxembourg (one of earliest commercial station to broadcast to Britain)

1939 - Home Service launched (British National radio station)

1964 - Pirate radio started (Radio Caroline - broadcast from a ship)

1967 - launch of Radio 1, 2, 3, 4

1970 - BBC local radio

1973 - Commercial radio stations able to start broadcasting locally

1990 - Broadcasting Act - easier for small local radio stations to get licenses

1992 - establishment of RAJAR - to record listening figures

2002 - establishment of latest stations, e.g. BBC Radio 6 Music

Present - More stations are streaming their prorgammes across the internet

Future - BBC cuts?
