1. WORKS a. Smart Urban Retrofit for unsmart city Bangalore

I started work on the 1st draft around Sept 2011 and published it online on 15th December 2014. This work can be downloaded from

SMART URBAN RETROFITS FOR AN UNSMART CITY BANGALORE, is a citizen’s initiative to make the city a SMART CITY with a mix of implementable policy initiatives and projects (complementing objectives of existing City Development Plan & Structure plan).

This work introduces the smartness characteristics expected from a metropolis like Bangalore, details the reasons for its UN SMARTNESS as on date and SMART URBAN RETROFITS - Policy initiatives and projects includes

• Green TDR:

It’s a policy initiative that can be executed very easily by tweaking existing legislation. The cost of execution is nominal and the multiplier effect (tangible as well as intangible) is large.

• Solar Green House and Green Retrofits for existing PV Power Plant;

Innovative projects to reduce carbon footprint of grid-linked solar PV systems and at the same time promotes food security.

• Solar Human Resource Capacity Building;

it’s a project cum initiative that helps in guild formation of tradesmen and its operation.

• Neighbourhood Solid waste to power plant;

Innovative project that includes reduction in ton miles of solid waste transportation; use of proven technology of smokeless incinerator (similar to CHUWASTAR), ORC Turbo Generator (proven Turboden-Mitsubishi) and absorption chiller for a Community Cold Store (using product from Broad/Thermax/Yazaki).

• Solar PV Modules globally competitive made @ India;

Economic development initiative (Policy as well as governance)

• Smart City Investment Trust (SMIT); .

Governance initiative, SMIT is going to strengthen the position of Mayor heading it, similar to the role played by Gujarat Municipal Finance Board.

• Urban Morphology Studies for planned future; Studies and research .

Conditions precedent that needs to be fulfilled before city-wide smart city initiative takeoff.

• Energy Smartness –

Through demand side energy management studies, community smart micro grid master plans; this is job that needs to be done before before city-wide smart city initiative takes off.

• Smart Urban System –

Virtual Health City ( based on experience of Singapore, that became a regional biotech hub within a decade. IoE applications that can evolve out of primary to tertiary health infrastructure and all stake holders in a metropolitan cityhas been covered) and Smart City broadband network

b. The Future of Housing Regeneration Technology, Form and Function Context of Bangalore India

Work on this idea started while preparing presentations for panel discussions on the same subject, held on 5th November, 2015, an online global event organised by APA, RTPI, CPA e.t.c to celebrate WORLD TOWN PLANNERS DAY-2015

This work details the current scenario and justifies the future urban/ housing renewal market potential through case study based development number.

The work can be accessed at

c. Smart City Proposal – Citizens Initiative for Smart Port Blair

The idea behind / goal of CITIZENS INITIATIVE FOR SMART CITY PORT BLAIR is to

• Practice participatory planning. What we have achieved is that we are able to demonstrate that its possible using new communication modes & tools like facebook; Though there was a will among the coordinator, members of group and PBMC officials, it could not happen in a desired way due to lack of quality internet connectivity.

• Change the focus from conventional development models and move towards THIRD INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION COMPLIANT ECONOMY. You will find the SMART CITY PROPOSAL - Citizens Initiative's objective in synergy with TIR Compliance. It would also fulfill additional agenda of MOUD; Govt of India.

• Highlight the fact that there is a need to have customized solution, we cannot be taken for granted for ever. It cannot be a COPY-PASTE job. When a foreign company starts work in India, it either spends years before establishing or takes an Indian partner / hires Indians. Unfortunately in case of consultants working in the islands, neither they spend time to get a feel of the place nor do they spend money to hire local resources.

CITIZENS INITIATIVE FOR SMART PORT BLAIR - A & N ISLANDS was started before declaration of the SCI-MOUD by honourable PM on 25th June, 2015.
