SP-X IPMI Stack – Quick Comps
• Proven, very robust, now at version 4.0
• Based on a Linux 2.6 based Kernel
– It‟s a challenge to optimize timings for the Linux OS instead
of an RTOS, but AMI obtained great results
• Small footprint, focus on performance
– SoL performance: 4KB (32Kbits) throughput with AES encryption
– Fast KCS timing: response time ≈1ms
• Gathers sensor info in a faster, more efficient way. The
compilation of the SDR table is almost instantaneous
• Advanced fan control algorithms
• Supports DCMI
• Optional porting tools revolutionize platform porting with
easy GUI, code reuse

What is DCMI?
• Still based on the Intelligent Platform Management
Interface
• Addresses High Density Data Centers (HDDCs)– Locations where tens of thousands of blade servers are deployed have unique
needs in terms of manageability. The use of power is a major component of
HDDC costs, both capital and operational. DCMI strengthens sensing and
management of power consumption and temperature control.
• DCMI defines a concise sub-set of IPMI commands– Years of deployment have shown that some IPMI commands and interfaces are
most frequently used, such as in-band management tools; while commands that
are not necessary have been purged to reduce footprint & costs.
• Adds a few new commands to augment manageability
of HDDCs– In DCMI, instrumented power supplies report primary power usage on a per-
server basis to understand how a given application performs for the power that its
host server consumes. Centralized Management consoles have a richer sensor
info basis to aggregate or process power data.
