What is Leadership?

Leadership is guidance or direction

Meaning of Leadership

Influencing and supporting others to work enthusiastically toward achieving objectives.

Important elements :Influence and support Voluntary effortGoal achievement

Some one who can take a group of people to a place they do not think they can go.

A Leader is :

Elements of Leadership1. Leaders :

Is the most important element in leadership , there could be no leadership without leaders.

2. Followers : Followers are equally important in leadership

, one can not be a leader without followers.

3. Situation : Situation events distinguish leaders from non

leaders.

Basic operational principles of Islamic Leadership

The are three basic principles that govern Islamic leadership :

1. Shura : the first principle of Islamic leadership Muslim leaders are obligated to consult with

those have knowledge and can provide sound advice.

2. Justice : Leaders should deal with people justly and

fairly regardless of color and race .

3. Freedom of thought : Islamic leaders should provide for and

even invite constructive criticism from followers.

Leaders should strive for creating atmosphere of thinking, healthy exchange of ideas ,criticism and mutual advice so that , followers feel very comfortable in discussing matters of interest to the group.

Characteristics of an Islamic Leader

1. Honesty : Consistency between words and deed. Prophet Moses “strong and Trustworthy” Prophet Mohammed “Sadik-Truthful and

Amin- trustworthy”

2. Competence Leader’s ability causes obedience of followers. Prophet Yusuf “demand for the post of

Finance officer”

3. Inspiration Positive about the future , no matter how bad

the situation may be . Leaders never give up or lose hope. AbuBakr and the death of the prophet ‘SAW’

and His Khudbah

“O people ,if you have been worshiping Muhammed , know that Mohamed is dead. But if you have been worshiping god , then know that god is living and never dies.”

1. Obedience : The leader must be obeyed for what the

follower likes or dislikes. Hearing and obeying are the duty of

Muslim leaders. Islam views any insubordination of a leader

as abhorrent and hateful.

The following are some of the basic skills that transform one into effective leader :

1. Learn from experience :Leaders learn from others , and most

importantly from selected others.2. Communicate with others :Being able to be understood by your peers

clearly is the key of establishing good relationship

3. Listen to others : Good listening is a good start for confidence

building and lasting trust in each others .4. Be assertive :

Assertiveness is not dominating others . It should be understood as standing on your own

and group rights .5. Provide constructive feedback : Feedback helps others to improve their

performance and helps deter some pleasant behaviors, habits or actions .
