2Why IPTV ?
All Rights Reserved © Alcatel-Lucent 2009
Service Provider Side of the Picture
• Triple Play / Convergence : High Speed Internet, Voice Over IP and IPTV using the same IP backbone. (ALUs TPSDA)
• Even quadruple play : Mobile phones Wifi/GSM aware used at home utilizing the VOIP service at home. (flat rate)
• Service providers with triple play offering wants to offer you all these services with just one access link (xDSL,FTTH...) and IPTV is a major part of this strategy.
• AT&T ‘s $4 billion Lightspeed project is an example. ($6 billion more investment in upcoming 5 years)
• As every service is under the control of single entity (Service Provider) ensuring SLA for all these services with QoS is easy.

Customer / End User Side of the Picture
• Competive and flat prices for end users on bundles including all these services. (HSI,IPTV,VOIP)
• No need for extra installation like satellite dish, lnb, motors etc... Mostly utilizing the old access networks. Even STBs (set-top-box) can be replaced by media centers, PCs , gaming consoles like XBOX 360.
• Single customer service point responsible for all these 3 services.
• Plus the fancy features of IPTV :
• Interactivity (Connected,social)
• PVR - Personal Video Recorder , NPVR – Network PVR, Timeshift Restart
• Watch as you need (PPV- Pay per view, VOD – Video on Demand)
• All IP Based applications can be accesible from TV. (For eg. Receive notification when you get email, IM messages etc.)

IRD - Integrated Receiver Decoder or Descrambler
•IRD Tunes into the frequency and outputs a single service stream.
•Uses the CA – Conditional Access Module to Descramble Encrypted content.

Encoders - Mpeg Encoding Primer
•GOP – Group of Picture
• I Frames : Snapshots of picture – Full Image Data
• P Frames : Delta Information - Approx %40 of image data
• B Frames : Predections of how objects moved. Checks forward P frame and backward I frame, contains vector information – Max %25 data

Encoders - Mpeg Encoding Primer
•Currently used encoding technologies in IPTV : MPEG2, MPEG4 – AVC (H264) and WM
•Output of IRD (Input of Encoder) :
• SDI Bitrate : 360 Mbit/s
• HD-SDI : 1.485 Gbit/s
•Output of Encoder - Bitrates :
• SD Channel : 3,0 Mbps
• HD Channel : 9,5 Mbps
• PIP Channel : 0,26 Mbps
• Radio : 0,25 Mbps

IP Network and Multicast
•Core network of the SP has high bandwidth but access side we have limited bandwidth. (For eg. ADSL2+ have Max 25 MBps)
•If you put 1HD Channel – 1 VOIP Stream – 1 Mbit HSI that means approx 10Mbit per household.
•Without multicast the access network is oversubsrcibed by all the channels.
•With IGMP – Internet Group Management Protocol aware network the edge devices only send the multicast needed to the end-users.
•Most Service providers use IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 with SSM deployments.
•Inside the customer network specific protocols like PIM,DVMRP,MOSPF etc..
•Prioritization is done by QoS mechanisms.

Multicast Primer
•Class D - Multicast (224.0.0.0 – 239.255.255.255)
•Address resolution 1-1 mapping not ARP
•IGMPv2(RFC2236) Messages :
• Join/Report
• Leave
• Query
•PIM
• Dense Mode
• Sparse Mode

Residential Gateways
•RGW = Last network point
•External Interface (DSL,Fiber etc..) – Differantiation of traffic via VC (virtual circuit)
•Internal Interface / LAN (Mostly Ethernet, HPNA : Coax or Phone cables)
•Externel – Internal Connectivity
• Bridge Mode
• Routing Mode / NAT (Network Address Translation)
