INFORMATION PROCESSING

Information has become a very integral part of everyday living. This is largely due to the fact that we live in the information age. Today, one cannot exist without giving any consideration to information. Everyone interacts with information based devices either on a professional or personal level daily.

Page 3: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

The information processing cycle (IPC) involves a series of stages undertaken to transform data into information.

Page 4: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

Data can be defined as “raw material” or unorganized facts. Data can be categorized under various types, including numbers, words or symbols. Data can be obtained in a number of ways, from either primary (internal) sources or secondary (external) sources.

Page 5: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

Primary sources of data are facts obtained first hand usually through interviews, questionnaires and surveys.

Secondary data are facts collected or created by someone other than the one who needs the data. (Acquisition stage)

Page 6: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

Information can be defined as processed data that has passed through the information processing cycle.

This information is known to be a collection of data organized in such a way that it has additional value.

Page 7: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

The information processing cycle (IPC) is defined as the steps that data must follow to become useful or meaningful. The three primary stages of the information processing cycle. These are the input of data, processing of data into information and output of information. Others may include ; distribution and archiving.

Page 8: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

At this stage of the cycle, data is required through various methods as discussed earlier. After acquiring the data at this stage, it is then put into a recognizable format that can be processed by the computer. The common devices used to enter the data into the computer include the computer mouse, keyboard and scanner.

INPUT OF DATA

Page 9: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

This is the stage where the data is manipulated into information. By processing data into information, the data is edited, added to or removed from or transform the unorganized facts into something meaningful and useful to the user. The device used to change data into information the central processing unit of the computer.

PROCESSING DATA

Page 10: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

There are numerous central processing unit chips on the market. These include AMD processor, Intel’s Pentium I-V series, Celeron series and Pentium M and D processors.

Page 11: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

This is the last major part of the information processing cycle. At this stage, the processed data is displayed as information. At this stage, the organized data, known as information is produced in a form that can be used by the computer user. Just as data comes in many different forms, so does the way information can be displayed. It can be displayed as either printed text on a sheet of paper or displayed on a computer monitor.

OUTPUT OF INFORMATION

Page 12: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

The devices that aid in the output of information include the computer monitor, printer and speakers.

Page 13: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

The computer is capable of transforming data into information using the information processing cycle. For the computer to complete the information processing cycle, the various devices that make up the computer system must be brought together to work effectively. The computer system refers to a complete computer setup that includes the keyboard, mouse, system unit and monitor.

Page 14: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

The computer transforms data into information by receiving input from the keyboard or mouse. The keyboard or mouse converts data from human language to machine language which the computer will understand and then sends it to the system unit for processing.

Page 15: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

INFORMATION PROCESSING

Depending on the speed of the processor, the data is worked on in several ways to make it useful and relevant to the one in need of the information. The computer processor inside of the system unit works very fast in converting the data into information within a matter of milliseconds to display the information on the monitor.

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Copyright is a term generally used by people in every part of the world to describe the rights that can be exercised by the author of a book. Usually, when people think of copyright, they think of the laws that protect a book from being published.

Copyright though is much bigger than books and very widespread. The history of copyright goes as far back as the 17th Century and the law has been revised over the years to meet the changes that have occurred in human history.

Page 63: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Copyright is a legal concept adopted by many countries to give the creator of an original work exclusive rights to the work, usually for a limited time. Generally, it is "the right to copy", but it also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other, related rights. It is a form of intellectual property applicable to any form of an idea that can be expressed in a substantive way.

Page 64: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

The Statute of Anne was the first real copyright act, and gave book publishers rights for a fixed period, after which the copyright expired. Copyright has grown from a legal concept regulating copying rights in the publishing of books and maps to one with a significant effect on nearly every modern technology, covering such items as sound recordings, films, photographs, software, and architectural works.

Page 65: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Copyright aims to promote the creation of new works by giving creators, inventors and authors permission to control and profit from their works. Copyright laws have been standardized through international conventions such as the Berne Convention and Universal Copyright Convention and Ghana has signed on to these conventions.

Page 66: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Most computer programs including games, videos and music are covered by copyright and the owner or user of these programs is required to comply with the instructions that come with it. Some copyright licenses allow users to install programs on more than one computer whereas others do not. If you do not comply with such instructions, you would be in infringement of copyright laws.

Page 67: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Copyright infringement is the term used to describe the act of breaking copyright rules and regulations. This may include making illegal copies of software. Many people are in the habit of making duplicate copies of software such as the Windows XP operating system, MS-Word or MS-Excel for their friends instead of encouraging them to buy it from an authorized dealer.

Others actually reproduce the software, music and video, then sell them at a cheaper price without the permission of the creator of the product. This is known as piracy.

Page 68: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Copyright is primarily designed to protect the works of people. The idea behind copyright is to ensure that nobody copies the work of another person to make profit or gain.

Copyright also ensures the following

• Makes sure people are properly rewarded for their

hardwork in creating new products

• Ensures healthy competition, since people areforced

to create new products without having to copy

already existing ones

Page 69: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

In Ghana, the copyright law (PNDC Law 110) of March 21, 1985 provides protection to authors for the list of protected works under section 2 of the Law for a period of the life of the author and 50 years after his death.

The Law also provides for the protection of sound recordings and folklore and the establishment of a system of collective administration of authors rights.

Page 70: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

The Law also establishes a Copyright Office and provides criminal sanctions for the infringement of copyright. However, technological changes, new international obligations and the need for enhanced enforcement provisions to be added to the law has led to the drafting of a new Copyright Bill.

Page 71: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Other laws similar to copyright laws like the Patent and Trade mark laws prevent people from making duplicates of computer hardware. It can therefore be argued that the country has sufficient laws to ensure that people behave in an ethically acceptable manner when using ICTs.

Page 72: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

The copyright laws of Ghana have strict penalties for those who break the law. There are basically two types of penalties or sanctions that can be applied to those who break copyright laws. These are imprisonment and fines.

In addition to the imprisonment and fines, copyright infringement also retards progress, discourages people creating and inventing new things and also denies individuals and organisations funds they need to create new and better products.

Page 73: Introduction to I C TIN JNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN GHANA by Ghadafi

TOPICS

COPYRIGHT ETHICS

Copyright infringement also causes the prices of goods to rise. It cost so much to produce these goods but only few people buy the genuine product due to the counterfeits that are made by copyright offenders. Thus, the company is forced to sell its products at a high price always, in order to make some profit to keep them in business, where as the copyright offenders make all the money and fail to make proper use of it.

THE INTERNET AND WORLD WIDE WEB

There are many other technologies used to access the internet. The computer is the major technological tool used to access the internet. Most computers are equipped with a modem, which can be used to convert digital signals to analog and vice versa. Most computers also have an internet browser which helps computer users to read and view internet web pages and websites.

THE INTERNET AND WORLD WIDE WEB

Computers are not the only devices used to access the Internet. Mobile devices such as laptops and mobile phones can also be used to access the Internet using wireless technology other than the traditional phone line. With this technology you can access the internet whilst on the move without staying in one place provided there is internet connectivity.

Satellites are used to send data and information around the world. Satellites refer to man made equipment that orbits around the earth or moon. Satellites are capable of receiving and transmitting data and information from one point to another point on the earth. ISP’s have huge telecommunication antennas that send or receive information from these satellites. The information is then transmitted to the server of the ISP which is then sent to the computer of the internet user.

THE INTERNET AND WORLD WIDE WEB

The telephone line is one of the major technologies used to send internet information from the ISP to the internet user. Since the telephone works only on an analog system and computers work on a digital system, a modem is used to make the necessary conversion so that people can access the information they want from the Internet.
