Job Tasks: apply biochemistry (chemistry that deals with the chemical substances
and processes occurring in organisms) to find environmentally-friendly applications for
the petroleum industry. They use biological processes to supplement non-biological
methods used in applications such as clean-up of oil spills. They use sophisticated
technology to conduct experiments with micro-organisms.
Education Required: A degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology or a
related field is required. A Masters degree or Ph.D. in chemistry and Certification from
a professional association may be required.
Salary: $55,000 - $70,000 (average annual salary)
Biochemist I
Biotechnology
Job Tasks: Evaluates the physical properties of various living organisms in order to
investigate their applications to medicine and other industries. Has knowledge of
commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on
instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works
under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising
independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
Education Required: Requires a bachelor's degree and 0-2 years of
experience in the field or in a related area. Opportunity for promotion to Biochemist
level II, III.
Salary: $43,380 (average annual salary in San Diego, CA)
Biomedical Engineering Technician
Biotechnology
Job Tasks: Assembles, maintains, and repairs various medical equipment. Tests the
functionality of equipment and takes accuracy, sensitivity, and selectivity
measurements. Assists medical staff in operation of equipment. Familiar with standard
concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and
judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Works under
general supervision. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required. Typically
reports to a supervisor or manager.
Education Required: May require an associate's degree in biomedical engineering or
electronic engineering.
Salary: $46,915 (average annual salary in San Diego, CA)
Cytotechnologist
Biotechnology
Job Tasks: A laboratory professional who studies cells and cellular
abnormalities. They use the microscope to analyze slides of human cells to search for
cause or abnormalities that indicate a cell is malignant, pre-malignant or diseased. By
observing the nuclei and cytoplasmic structures within cells, cytotechnologists can
identify malignancies.
Education Required: Training programs in cytotechnology exist at the baccalaureate,
post-baccalaureate certificate, and master's levels. Usually, students are accepted
into an accredited hospital or university-based program after their sophomore or junior
year of college.
Salary: $49,026 (average annual salary)
Clinical Geneticist
Biotechnology
Job Tasks: They provide genetic diagnosis, management, therapy and counseling
services. They often supervise genetic counselors, and help families understand
possible genetic issues.
Education Required: There are various training programs throughout the United
States in genetics. Most of the programs are two years in duration and offer hands-on
experience along with skills in writing, conducting clinical and or laboratory research,
and organizing and delivering lectures and seminars.
